“Got to be the best hotel EVER”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

This is the second time we have stayed a Tenahead. We love climbing Naudes Nek and in our 4x4 it is a doddle. It is all part of the adventure. Nolan and Shauna (the managers) do everything. Shauna was our chef and the food was excellent considering they really have to plan their menus and source their food from ????? who knows where? I am dog mad so Tena (the resident Jack Russell) made the hotel feel like home. I nearly took him home with me. The rooms are beautiful with huge windows, and the bathroom also has massive windows and you feel like you are showering outside. We had a great "altitude" run just to get the feel for the Rhodes run. Buy one of their very warm fleeces. I live in mine in the winter. We will certainly be back.

My wife and I recently spent 3 days at this amazing mountain retreat ! What a place ! it's such a welcome sight after so many hundreds of kilometres over the highest mountain roads in South Africa. It is really hidden away from sight and even when one summits the famous Naudes Nek pass, the turn off to Tenahead is still a journey on its own to this hidden gem in the southern Drakensberg.
We were encouraged to visit this hotel lodge by the lady at their stand at the Cape Getaway show, what a great choice it was as we even decided to cancel other hotel bookings just to stay on at Tenahead ! that should give you some idea of just how overwhelmed we were with everything from the stunning scenery from our bedroom (beautiful vista over the Bell river and surrounding mountains), to the amazing and attentive service from the managers Shauna and Nolan, attention to detail from all staff and just an awesome all round relaxing experience.
My wife was pampered in the quaint spa while I enjoyed wonderful fly fishing for small feisty rainbow trout in the Bell river. Great walks are available and we were accompanied by Tena, the resident jack russell on a hike up to the Vulture hide atop a surrounding peak with views to Maclear!
The beds were brilliant and so too the pillows, plush and super comfy. The turn down service includes the lighting of your own big log fire and other nice touches. Even the bathroom is an experience what with open vista shower and full bath spa goodies etc. Rooms and passages also enjoy under floor heating. A fully stocked mini bar fridge and snacks are provided in each of the 7 guest suites.
A cosy lounge area adjoins the dining room where a truly amazing menu awaits each evening. During our stay, Shauna performed the function of head chef and she really did an amazing job. We were totally impressed with her creations and the wonderful personalised service offered by the staff.
All in all, Tenahead is a true Oasis in the mountains and it should not be overlooked when next you plan your trip into the Rhodes area of the southern Drakensberg.

After what seemed like eternity along the dirt road we made it to Tenahead! What a pretty place high in the mountains - well worth the drive.

Food was limited but very nice. The restaurant needed a little 'vibe' adding to it as it did feel quite uncomfortable talking in hushed tones.

The spa was lovely and the therapist very good.

We enjoyed a wonderful walk with Tena the Dog....he was a perfect host.

All in all, a lovely place to 'get away' for a night or two (probably advise two nights as you need to recover from the long, long, long dirt road!) Views are fantastic.....

The bed was wonderful with big squishy pilliows and the open log fire was just perfect!

Had a wonderful three days here. It is almost everything you want from a small boutique hotel. Great rooms with some amazing views, lovely setting and great hosts. We will be back, especially if I can get an entry to Rhodes marathon next year then I will make this my base. The only thing that I could recommend for improvement is the food, the food is good but not great. To be fair I have eaten at some of the best in land like Cleopatra Mountain and Hartford house, so take what I say as coming from a food snob. Some meals were great and original, others were just ok. Unfortunately the hotel is so far away from good shops that they have a bit of a disadvantage with getting fresh supplies.

Spent a few days at Tenahead Lodge. The service that we received from Nolan and Shauna, the managers, were fantastic. From arrival to our departure they catered to our every need and want. The food, breakfast and dinner, were spectacular. Delicious as well as beautifully presented. The rooms have spectacular views over the Bell river and mountains and we spent hours hiking, fishing (without success) reading or just relaxing in front of our very own fireplace in our room. Will definitely be back in future.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the south facing rooms view, although they do get less sun than the north facing rooms.

We were welcomed by two awesome people..Shauna and Nolan!! The place is stunning with the most spectacular views!! The food was amazing...very well prepared!! We had a fantastic room with underfloor heating as well as a fireplace and the bonus is the shower overlooking the Bell River!!

It is quite a long drive up Naudes Nek pass, but we enjoyed the beautiful scenery!

This is really a place to visit!!!

It was getting dark as my new wife and I entered Rhodes. We as were making our way up Naudes Nek (Highest dirt road in SA) to Tenahead. She had no idea what I had planned for our honeymoon, but after an adventurous drive up in our little Corsa bakkie, she was blown away by the awesome stone lodge.

It was dark and cold when we arrived but we were warming greeted by Nolan and his dog Tena and shown to our luxury room that had been waiting for us with the fireplace crackling. It was a great start to our honeymoon stay and it only got better.
The food was awesome, Nolan and Shauna's service and warm heartedness really made us feel at home in the beautiful setting. Tena, the Jack Russell, took us on a guided tours of the farm - which is 2500 meters above sea level.

Unfortunately the wind was really blowing, so there was no snow and it meant we were unable to ride the horses but that at least gives us one of many reasons to return to Tenahead.

Tenahead was a beautiful spot for our honeymoon and a perfect place to begin my new adventure with my wife.
