We stayed in Portobello hostel trying to see if we could get a boat to Columbia. We ended up not getting a boat because we did not have much time, but we stayed in Portobelo for two nights and explored the town. Captain Jack is quite a character and a great host and it was fun for us to stay there. We unfortunately could not use the restaraunt - it is kind if pricey if you are backpacking. The kitchen is not for guests use, but there is a gas barbeque on the back with a picnic table, so you can make do. Internet wasn´t free for guests as well. Rooms were nice and clean and mattraces confortable. There is also a charge of $1 to use lockers.
We enjoyed Portobelo - there is no one there and plenty to see - 3 historic forts you can explore free of charge, Iglesia de Christo Negro, and if you rent a kayak you can paddle to a beautiful desserted beach and spend a day or two there (ask Captain). We highly recommend NOT to skip Portobelo.

Small place with clean beds. Its great place for night or two to find a boat to Colombia. Jack is great and full of information, but very busy too. Internet is not free but you can use one of theres for 30min for a $1, plenty of time to let your friends or family know you found your boat.

Simply the best food in town (although far from the cheapest), a great place to meet other backpackers who are either about to set sail or just have. Clean and hospitable owners in a good, quiet location. Internet is not free (weird, but is probably expensive in Portobelo).

Make sure you head over to the three level fort and check out the little beach around the headland - it is stunning. Town has four supermarkets - biggest two (from Jack's) are to the right of the church.

Has the last proper fresh water shower you'll get before Colombia.

Room Tip: Dorms are kind in a bunker configuration. We were in the far back area, amongst our fellow sailing passengers so no one woke us up early - try to be around people in a similar situation if you want a good night's sleep as boats can depart early.

My girlfriend and I came to Portobelo not knowing where to stay and stumbled across Captain Jack's new Hostel Portobelo. Very friendly atmosphere with clean, comfortable bed. Dennis and Jack did an amazing job building this place from scratch and they will make sure your stay is a blast.

There is a painted backpacker sign where the bus drop people off so the place is easy to find. The hostel is only a few months old and will be a amazing place once all of Jack's vision gets implemented. We are already planning a trip back!
