I had a absolutely amazing time staying in Portobelo... the lil town has a incredibly rich history and a somewhat unique, laidback lifestyle.
Getting there is very easy from Panama City.... you take the bus from Albrook bus station to Colon, but you need to get off in Sabanitas(right next to "Rey Supermarket") . You will then need to wait at the same location you got off the bus to catch the next bus to Portobelo. Very easy, I speak zero spanish and I had no problems. Whole trip cost me less than $3. Was so cheap I tipped the bus driver(which is unheard of lol)
Once in Portobelo, the hostel is very easy to find, walking distance from the bus stop. Has a bar with somewhat overpriced beer, but it was very cold, so I didn't mind... too much. Food at the hostel restaurant is good, but somewhat pricey... filet mignon and other things on the menu, I had the cheeseburger, was cheaper and well made. The rooms are clean dorms, price appropriately. Lots of sailors and travelers passing through.
Captain Jack is a older retired fella, he was happy to help with everything I needed to know/do while in Portobelo, even has a couple kayaks you can rent. Once night came we all had a blast singing, playing guitar and kicked back a few beers. Had a great time in a great location.... I will be coming back.More
