If you're in the Wigan, Southport, Liverpool area, this place has much to recommend it. Small (only 5 rooms). Clean, well decorated rooms with new furniture and comfortable beds and at £30.00 B&B (£50.00 for 2) a bargain.
Breakfast is generous (3 rashers of bacon, two sausages, egg, beans, tomato, fried bread, toast and REAL COFFEE. Food is afternoons only, but Simon will offer food in the evenings to resudents (prices very good 5oz Steak £3.99). Food is typical pub grub, but good quality , cheap and plentiful (try the Thursday Steak Pie).
A well stocked bar (Tetleys Mild & Bitter plus 2 rotating guests) and there's two 'smooth' beers and a selection of lagers for the terminally tasteless.
Simon and Mandy (whatever you do don't call her Amanda, it's painful) are new in the pub, but trying really hard to make a go of it and succeeding. It's also a thriving local, with one of the friendliest crowds I've ever met (I was talking to the locals like old friends inside 5 minutes).
The only downside is the television in the rooms, the picture quality is awful, and the range of channels limited to the 5 terrestrials.
However, with all that good beer, you'll not be spending much time in the bedrooms.
