“Thank you, Red Well, for an excellent evening”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 September 2012

My wife and I 'sampled' The Red Well Inn, some weeks ago, by having dinner there - it was highly-satisfactory. Fortified with this good experience, I suggested to a group of (8) friends to meet there for dinner - which we did, last evening (27/09/12). Suffice to say that none of us was disappointed - the food and service was again absolutely first-class.

We were alerted to this inn when we were shopping at Kirkby Lonsdale market, and a stallholder said his smoked fish came from the Lune Valley Smokehouse at the Redwell Inn. We had several times driven by the Redwell and as it was obvious it was being done up we never stopped. Seeking lunch one day we decided to try it and were instantly charmed. The inn has been sympathetically restored and retains much of its country inn character whilst being smart and modern. We were also pleased when we studied the bar menu. Neither of us are big eaters and are often put off by the groaning overloaded plates offered by some local pubs. This menu has got it right - several lighter dishes are offered and many of the starters are the right size for a light lunch for those of smaller appetites. I chose the warm scotch egg, which arrived with the egg runny. How do they do that? My husband had the homemade burger in a soft barm with a rocket and parmesan salad. Both dishes were satisfying and delicious. We then studied the pudding menu and chose cranachan for me, eton mess for him. This is my only criticism - the cranachan (my favourite dessert) had too much cream and not enough whisky! With two large glasses of wine and two pints of real ale (can't remember which) the bill came to just under £45 with which we were well pleased. True, we would probably have got twice asmuch food for that money at one of the groaning plate establishments, but we wouldn't have enjoyed it half as much. The service was friendly, cheerful and efficient, and the ambience delightful. Well done, Redwell, keep up the good work.

Room Tip: We only ate there.

We have just returned from a camping weeking in Kirkby Lonsdale, on the Saturday night we decided to go to the Redwell Inn for something to eat as it was a 5 minute walk from the campsite. I have got to recommed this place !! the food was outstanding and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. Our party of 4 thought it was great value for money and will definatley be going back again. The staff went that extra mile as we asked them to ring us a taxi, instead the friendly member of staff drove us back to the campsite in her car 10 out of 10 all round !! Thank you

It's getting on for two years since the Talbot family took over the Redwell Inn and they can look back on their tenure with justifiable pride.
They have transformed the place into a traditional hostelry, boasting a cosy bar and restaurant and tastefully furnished dining areas.
A roaring wood-burning stove pumped out a warm greeting as four of us arrived for lunch on a bitingly cold late April day.
The family's attention to detail in pretty well everything was there for us all to see and enjoy, not least the welcome from the young lady behind the bar, who served us drinks and then a took our orders.
The menu was fascinating, including several enterprising dishes that sent out a clear message: this place is different.
One of our group plumped for the lighter menu and indulged himself in a bowl of spring vegetable soup followed by a rather splendid looking bacon bun.
Two of us went for the fish pie and, boy, was it good! Hidden beneath a crisp potato crust was a veritable treasure of sea creatures, ranging from smoked haddock to smoked salmon (not forgetting a couple of seared scallops resting alluringly next to the pot) with, just below the surface, a whole boiled runny egg! Splendid stuff!
Daringly, our fourth companion, in her new low carbon footprint mode, went vegetarian for the day, diving into a cured peppers-based pancake dish which she declared superb.
It emerged during our chat with the waitress (who added to the family feel when she appeared at the table with mashed potatoes for the pepper dish, while carrying a delightful little boy called Oliver under her other arm) that the Talbots cure all their own fish and meat and prepare their own sausages.
They are also on the verge of opening a smokehouse next to the inn...offering a wide range of delights to customers.
The lunch went down a treat, the whole experience being given a firm thumbs up by the four of us, who are now planning a a return one evening for dinner. The sooner the better!

We recently had a dinner party for six at the Redwell as we enjoyed previous meals there.
Sadly this time was a disaster!
We ordered promptly but waited an hour for the starters to arrive although the restaurant was not busy for a Saturday night.
THe scallops were cremated. We complained to the waitress who came back from the kitchen and said " CHef says that is how they are supposed to be"!!
Service was too slow and not worth the £60 a head we were charged.
We may give the pub another try sometime, but not in a hurry..

I had kept the location of our dinner a secret until the last seconds when we arrived at the door. We were met just inside and our coats taken ready to hang. When asked, we chose to go straight to table rather than wait at the bar to be called. Menus appeared and we were given time to choose. The Redwell states up front that "All of our menu choices are freshly prepared and cooked to order" and they ask for a little patience. A couple of large glasses of wine arrived to help us decide. Service was good, quiet, observant, well trained. We both had the shrimp starter; on a crusty white with a small amount of greenery. Just right and the right size. My wife had the Pan Fried Calves Liver with
their own Dry Cured Bacon, Caramelised Baby Onions, Creamed Potatoes, Pan Gravy , and loved it. I had the fish pie, which used their own Smoked Haddock & Smoked Salmon, Light Leek Sauce, Spinach, Runny Egg, Mash, Lancashire Cheese, Seared Scallops. It was very good, and filling. No room for sweets, alas. Coffee to follow with cream for one and hot milk for the other. We were highly delighted with the whole evening. Every detail was attended to, quietly, with gentle efficiency. We'll be back.

The great thing about the food at the Redwell Inn is that it keeps getting better as the dishes change with the seasons, develop, or new ones appear. The ambiance also is unbeatable. We have lunched there alfresco on a hot day and dined there in winter with a warm wood burning stove, each time was extremely enjoyable and with excellent friendly service.
It is really refreshing to find a restaurant that uses such an excellent range of local products, cooked to perfection and at reasonable prices. We had the black pudding fritters, the game terrine and cheese parfait, followed by the pheasant (twice) and belly pork, all beautifully presented with imaginative sauces and accompaniments. These were complimented by an outstanding selection of beautifully cooked seasonal vegetables. The wine was excellent, as was the Redwell bitter and was outstanding value for money. The icing on the cake was the additional produce on sale such as the bread and smoked salmon and other delicacies, which are a tempting "carry out".

Room Tip: We have only eaten there so far
