Top marks to the manager Valerie - she is the heart and soul of this hotel. However, she does not appear physically well enough to be the frontline manager. Everything else about it is faded and jaded. The gardens are green but gloomy, our bedroom was dark, depressing and dated. The choice on the dinner menu on both nights was almost identical. The food was good enough - definitely no wow moment. The tables are adorned with plastic orchids. The background music was the same CD of Frank Sintra playing on a loop. I believe the owners are due to visit ... my advice to them .... I will be passing my feedback to the Blue Book. This hotel would benefit from a complete upgrade.

My wife first heard about Ardtara while waiting for the Park and Ride bus in Belfast, and got talking to the girl beside her - she recommended the restaurant at Ardtara. A quick look in Trip advisor confirmed Ardara's reputation.

Last weekend we booked 1 night in the hotel, met Valerie at reception, straight into first name terms, and were given room 2, overlooking both the front garden (with rabbits) and the tennis courts. The room itself was large, well decorated, small TV, plenty cupboard / wardrobe space, a couple of comfy chairs, hair drier, en-suite with combined bath/shower. Decor is more in keeping with the building (circa 1860's).

There are 2 lounges, one with the bar (yep, no draught beer - but hey ain't the end of the world, beer is available).

The dining room will cater for around about 11-13 tables (didn't actually count them).
Food was very good (had sirloin steak , medium rare) followed by cheese board.
Both courses were enough, and felt contented at the end of the meal.
Staff couldn't be more accommodating, very friendly with none of the 'having to make an effort' we have seen in staff in other hotels we have stayed in.

Breakfast is the usual affair, cereal/ fruit juices/ toast/cooked breakfast - nothing to fault here.

Unfortunately we were awoken Sunday by the fire alarm going off , but it needed a phone call to reception to establish that what ever went wrong in the kitchen was quickly dealt with, and no cause for concern.

As with a previous advisor, we had no room key as the previous occupier had left with it. Didn't create a major problem, but an inconvenience.

Overall 4 stars, loved the piano ambiance on Saturday night (ok it was electronic), the room very good, the meals top notch, staff very good. We intend to stay again.

Room Tip: room 2 seemed to be the best in our eyes

An all-in price of some £170 including wines, dinner, bed and breakfast is quite acceptable and overall was good value.

So what if the wi-fi ranges between unavailable and erratic; the mobile reception is non-existent; the shower produces steam or scaldingly hot H2O; there is no draught beer; the fire alarm is a carbon monoxide monitor and there is no key to the door as a previous guest hadn't returned it.
But the staff try so hard, the waiter double-hats as bag-carrier and barman, the rooms are unique and there's a wonderful feeling of an age gone-by, an elegance.
To expect the all-singing, all-dancing, app-loaded, LED lit establishment is to miss the point.
Drop the expectation level, relax, LIVE a little and Ardtara will reward your senses, and your palate.

Our most recent booking for Ardtara house was for a wedding gift but we have been guests here and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff are fantastic but the food is exceptional. The garden rooms are beautiful. Ardtara is a well kept secret and I would thoroughly recommend this for anyone planning a special occasion.

Room Tip: The garden view rooms are beautiful

If you are searching for a secluded, peaceful rest combined with good food, then this is it.
The staff, led by Valerie were extremely friendly and polite while the food was just gorgeous.
Loses a star in my book due to lack of draught lagers!

Room Tip: Room #4 is fab!
