“The worst Costa Rica hotel experience ever”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

I've made multiple trips to Costa Rica in the past 3 years and based on the reviews and pictures on the hotel website, I thought Almonds & Corals was going to be a truly great experience. However, the stay was the worst of all my hotel stays, which has been over 10 different small, local hotels.

First the rooms are only screened in, which means any noise outside you hear clear as a bell. You have to have the drapes closed across all the walls for any privacy from the person staying in the room within 15' of your room. The floors had gaps in the boards, allowing mosquitoes in, and I got over 50 bites on my legs and arms, as I wasn't expecting having to wear mosquito repellent in my room.

They say to conserve water, yet have jacuzzis in the rooms - which was the only way to get enough water to bathe, as it was impossible to take a shower, as there was no water pressure. Just a drizzle down the shower head.

The restaurant had minimal choices, and the food was very mediocre. We had just stayed at an awesome hotel in central CR that had different choices nightly, that were all equivalent to a 5 star restaurant.

The nearby beach had a undertow, so you couldn't get in the water, if you wanted to. The WIFI that was supposed to exist, was down more than it was up.

Almonds & Corals was a tired, run down hotel at a very high price.

Very disappointed in this hotel experience.

I loved my stay in Almonds and Corals. Being in the middle of the jungle with beautiful bungalows and monkeys waking you up in the morning was amazing. If you love being close to nature this is your place. People in the hotel were very nice and food was good! Great experience!

We spent 4 days, 3 generations, grandpa, parents, 2 kids, and fully enjoyed it, including adventure type canopy rides. It may not be for everybody, tent like structures, no air conditioning, no TV. A key positive factor in our case was extremely friendly service by all and particularly the owner Aurora, who is a personality worth knowing by herself. She went as far as accomodating the whole family in the big spa room for an extra night when other bungalows were not available. The standard renting format including breakfast AND dinner is not very practical as one really wants to sample other local options. Price not cheap but reasonable by Costa Rica rather expensive standards.

This is a great concept hotel. Open aired (but with netting) cabinas in the middle of the forest. Truly relaxing. Each room has a jacuzzi / hot tub for personal use. Seems very eco-friendly and very well done. A little expensive (seems to be between $150 - 200, at least during high season), but definitely worth it for a truly relaxing quick vacation (or a longer stay as well!). The owners are usually on-site and very friendly. The food is overall good, but not necessarily typical caribbean food (no rice and beans!). Overall great experience!

This was my fiancé and my first trip to Costa Rica and the staff and owners at Almonds and Corals ensured it will not be our last. The food was delicious and with a free breakfast and dinner included every night you are staying at Almonds and Corals, the price was right. The rooms were beautiful, with great views of the jungle and a Jacuzzi bath in-suite. The resort offers many different tours, (jungle walk, canopy zip line, snorkeling and kayaking) with very knowledgeable guides who bring you closer to the native wildlife (monkeys, sloths, and a wide variety of gorgeous birds, even Dolphins!) Our third night there, a leatherback turtle laid her eggs on the beach right by our resort. Very cool. Only half a mile south is the quaint and lovely town of Manzanillo, with it's calm, clear blue Caribbean waters, it is well worth the 15 minute walk down the beach. A 15 minute drive away is bustling, yet relaxed town of Puerto Viejo, with a wide variety of shops, spas, and restaurants that boast a wonderful assortment of hand-made jewelry, wood workings, and garments. The food in Puerto Viejo is to die for! Everyone at Almonds and Corals was so wonderful and friendly, they made us feel at home. Special thanks to the owner, Marco whose knowledge of the area was impressive and to Michael, whose kindness was unmatched (and boy, he can make a great drink!). We were at Almonds and Corals for 6 days, but honestly could have spent the rest of our lives there in pure bliss. We will be back!

Room Tip: Get a room with a Jacuzzi! It was a perfect way to end every day!

This was the PERFECT choice for my daughter's graduation trip!! Online it looks great and in person it is BETTER!! As a Wildlife Biology major, she was in heaven with her camera, as I was! The raised "cabins" were elegantly basic, so we felt a part of the jungle and could hear and see all wildlife in the area! The Howler monkeys started their unique calls at 5a, so if you like to sleep in, not the place for you! Because it is so humid, the ceiling and oscillating fans were great.
Their focus on eco-friendly coexistence with nature is genuine, and Marco and his staff are very knowledgeable and forthcoming when it comes to the wildlife and environment, as well as friendly and hospitable! The food was great, the beautiful beach was steps away, every need was taken care of, and the ZIPLINE experience was breathtaking!! I would recommend ALmonds and Corals to anyone who loves nature and wants to immerse themselves in the Costa Rican jungle!!
