“Wonderful Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

We went as a party of 5 and stayed at the big house it was amazing to wake up to the howler monkeys every morning. When you get here it's like absolute paradise, you get a little taste of the jungle and it's only a 15 min walk to your own private beach. The service was wonderful, every morning or afternoon they would come by to clean the house and do laundry. Very friendly staff and super helpful. Half of our experience was due to the friendly staff, they made our stay feel like home.

Room Tip: The downstairs rooms are cooler, and watch out for locking yourself in.

I have travel all over the Caribbean and the southern US. I have stayed in 5 star resorts. Congo Bongo receives my 5 stars because of what it delivers to the adventurer. This is not the place for someone that wants to be waited on hand and foot. When my wife and I decided it was time to explore different countries and cultures we decided no more all inclusive resorts. Congo Bongo is a 10 minute walk from Manzanillo. Manzanillo has a grocery store with alcohol, a nice little restaurant with good food and a bar. There is also a souvenir shop and a couple of other stores. Twelve kilometers the other way there is a bigger town called Puerto Viejo. It has everything you want including 101 restaurants, doctors, banks, etc. Congo Bongo is a family run facility. There is 6 cabins (we stayed in the Palm House). They almost have a seventh cabin built. They are equipped with everything you need. If you want a jungle experience this is the place. Behind our cabin we had sloth that stayed there for 2 days. We saw and heard tucans daily. Every morning we woke up to the sounds of the howler monkeys. Most days we saw them in the trees. The one day we sat at our cabin and watched a group of more than 20 pass through the trees about 20 feet above us. We saw coatis, lots of butterflies (including the morpho butterfly), agoutis, lots of crabs and lizards and one day we even saw spider monkeys. These were all sighted within the property. The beach is a 5 minute walk through the path and the beach is private. Most days we saw no one at the beach and it is a beautiful sandy beach. Daan is the owner and he lives on the property with his family. You feel very secluded. We usually saw Daan once a day when he stopped by to see if there was anything we needed. Maria stopped by each day to see if she could clean up for us and do any laundry. (nice touch) When we got there we were met by Ernesto who gave us a tour of the cabin and provided us with a cell phone with all their personal numbers programmed in as well as doctors, police, taxis etc. Daan has installed security cameras as well. We never felt unsafe on or off the property. All the locals were very friendly. My wife and I both agreed that out of all our trips this trip tops the list for best trip ever. If you want a personal experience with the animals visit the Jaguar sanctuary. I highly recommend you pay the $50 for a private tour. I've done a separate review for the Jaguar Sanctuary so check it out. Pics too. I just wanted to thank Daan for hosting us and for being there anytime we had any questions. You live in paradise.

Room Tip: All the cabins are excellent. Base your decision by the size of your group. They are all equally p...

We stayed a few days in the Big House of Congo Bongo (3 adults and 2 children). Everything was just perfect. The place is amazing, the houses are smart, the rainforest is "wow!"... and the beach is only at a few steps – nice, peaceful and almost private beach!...

Daan and his team are very helpful, very cool and nice. They have thought of everything: mobile phone, laundry service, cleaning, bottle of wine, beach games, bicycles!... What else?...

I definitely recommend Congo Bongo. When you'll reach there for the very first time, open your eyes wide, walk slowly, enter the "finca", smell, listen... AND ENJOY! This first memory will never fade out...

I have been here 4 times...every time is just as wonderful as the last! I hate to leave. This stay was amazing, I enjoyed the "private" bach and relaxed in the hammocks. The area is just so beautiful. The people are very friendly. Daan and his family make you feel so welcome. Daan is always upgrading the place and looking for ways to make it even more enjoyable. This time he had put up a bunch of signs helping you navagate the area, the signs were very beautiful, so they did not take away from nature. The local resturants were very yummy. This area of Costa Rica is very inviting. Congo Bongo is amazing. All of the area is so nice, I cannot wait to go back. Already planning my next trip.

After 2 years I went back to Limon province in Costa Rica, and decided to spend another week at Congo Bongo as my first experience was awesome there. This time I did not visit it on my own, but with a friend of mine and we got the exact same rental house to share like the first time. Dejavu was sweet :) I was happy to see not many changes - you hear me right. The jungle around the rental houses did not change and I honestly loved it. We still heard howler monkeys every morning, saw toucans, butterflies, lizards and birds from your house, saw hundreds of crabs on the way to the beach ... The staff was the coolest ever, exactly the way they used to be 2 years ago. And the laundry was done so quickly! Having a kitchen with a blender helped a lot too (I am obsessed with smoothies.) This time I was more careful with the food so the little ants didn't get into it at all. And I practiced yoga on the porch where we had a sweet cat always next to us - this was new. Also, the wifi was way better than in 2012 and worked most of the time (although sometimes at night when raining it cut off for a bit.) Another nice change was that all the statues around Congo Bongo were painted this time - it gave it a nice playful touch. We also rented bicycles a few times to go to other beaches and I highly recommend to do so too when staying at Congo Bongo. The only down? A lot of mosquitoes in the area, so just get ready for them.
