Owner description: Designed by the Victorian engineer Robert Casement, the Laxey Wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from Glen Mooar which was part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex.Standing at over 72 feet high the wheel, which is also known as Lady Isabella, has been one of the Isle of Man’s most popular tourist attractions for well over 150 years. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the wheel turning before attempting to climb to the top where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Glen Mooar Valley. Once back on solid ground you can walk through the valley to find the Great Laxey Mines – learn about the lives of the miners, walk into the mine audit and take a trip on the Great Laxey Mines Railway which was once used to carry lead and zinc ores from deep inside the Great Laxey Mine.

“Wonderful Engineering!”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

This 160 year old wheel is a wonderful peice of engineering, and really is worth a visit along with the mine which is included on the same £5 adult ticket. Really gives you a feeling for why and how Laxey exists.

“Bella!”
Reviewed 6 June 2014 via mobile

Da visitare sicuramente! Non a buon mercato (si visitano ruota+entrata miniera in 20 minuti), ma Lady Isabella è un luogo iconico che vale il tempo e la spesa. Un sistema ingegnoso e.. Ancora funziona!

Absolutely a spot to go! Not really cheap (you can climb the wheel and visit the entrance of the mine in 20 minutes), but Lady Isabella is an Iconic place, and surely time and pounds to visit are well spent! Clever, fascinating... And still working!

“Need to be fit”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Not for the faint hearted as there are loads and loads of steps. Well worth it for the views so the mist and rain are not conducive to this attraction. Laxey itself is lovely.

“An extraordinary feat of engineering!”
Reviewed 25 May 2014

The Laxey Wheel is an amazing thing to see. And to see in such a fast and fluid motion. I found it mesmerising to watch the huge wheel spinning round, driven only by falling water. The tower, the wheel, the arches, the mines, the train: all of it was enchanting!! Such a great find.

“A bit pricey”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

A 'must-see' site, but at £5 per head, it's a bit pricey for what it is. You can get a good look at it by driving up to the car park, and walking up to the gate.
