Attraction details
Owner description: Designed by the Victorian engineer Robert Casement, the Laxey Wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from Glen Mooar which was part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex.Standing at over 72 feet high the wheel, which is also known as Lady Isabella, has been one of the Isle of Man’s most popular tourist attractions for well over 150 years. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the wheel turning before attempting to climb to the top where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Glen Mooar Valley. Once back on solid ground you can walk through the valley to find the Great Laxey Mines – learn about the lives of the miners, walk into the mine audit and take a trip on the Great Laxey Mines Railway which was once used to carry lead and zinc ores from deep inside the Great Laxey Mine.

Very well laid out display boards and grounds, Did not have sufficient time to do the area justice. Climbed to the top of the wheel, what a view.

“A Unique piece of History”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

Nicely set up for self guided tours. Many well written plaques describing the history of the well and mining. Lots of walking involved to see the whole site. No handicap access.

“A thing of beauty”
Reviewed 15 June 2014 via mobile

Engineering can be as beautiful as art and so it is with this STUNNING waterwheel. Built to power the pumps that got rid of water from the local lead and zinc mines it is still turning today. You can climb the spiral staircase right to the top of the wheel. The viewing platform there has some fantastic views over the beautiful Manx landscape. The staff are friendly and enthusiastic. The pride they have in this waterwheel only increased the joy I felt on seeing it. If you're in the area you would be mad not to go.

“Wonderful Engineering!”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

This 160 year old wheel is a wonderful peice of engineering, and really is worth a visit along with the mine which is included on the same £5 adult ticket. Really gives you a feeling for why and how Laxey exists.

Da visitare sicuramente! Non a buon mercato (si visitano ruota+entrata miniera in 20 minuti), ma Lady Isabella è un luogo iconico che vale il tempo e la spesa. Un sistema ingegnoso e.. Ancora funziona!

Absolutely a spot to go! Not really cheap (you can climb the wheel and visit the entrance of the mine in 20 minutes), but Lady Isabella is an Iconic place, and surely time and pounds to visit are well spent! Clever, fascinating... And still working!
