Attraction details
Owner description: Designed by the Victorian engineer Robert Casement, the Laxey Wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from Glen Mooar which was part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex.Standing at over 72 feet high the wheel, which is also known as Lady Isabella, has been one of the Isle of Man’s most popular tourist attractions for well over 150 years. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the wheel turning before attempting to climb to the top where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Glen Mooar Valley. Once back on solid ground you can walk through the valley to find the Great Laxey Mines – learn about the lives of the miners, walk into the mine audit and take a trip on the Great Laxey Mines Railway which was once used to carry lead and zinc ores from deep inside the Great Laxey Mine.

“Nice place”
Reviewed 2 July 2014 via mobile

Visited this place with a friend of mine who drove me to it from her house. It's a little out the way but well worth the visit. Really surprised me how big it actually is. Climb the steep narrow steps to the top and the view of the wheel from there is magnificent and be warned it's not for the feint hearted. Be careful not to bang your head on a very low beam that you have to duck under when your near the top. Scarey but well worth it just to say I've been up there ☺

“Visit to Laxey Wheel”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

We hired a car and went to visit The Laxey Wheel which was very interesting.
They had lots of information for tourists to read while going round the site which was easy to read and understand, not too long and sometimes too much to take in at one go. This was great!

“Gobsmacking Victorian engineering”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

Sometimes the Victorian engineers did well, at other times very well, now and again they just go for the biggest and best.... Waterwheels are probably one of the earliest power generation plants you can find, but this one is so big that the mind boggles at the feat of putting it together using only the block and tackles and tied together scaffolding in use at the time... and it still turns.
Definitely worth a visit for any neeks geeks and children in need of a little exercise - you climb steep stairs to the viewing platform. Being the Isle of Man it is refreshingly free of health and safety paranoia, so you are expected to look after your children!... partners can rest at the pub by the station or both return to it, the food there was good and reasonably priced.

“An engineering masterpiece”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

Don't miss this huge and well restored piece of engineering excellence. It's a bit of a walk from Laxey station on the Electric Tram line, but well worth it. Allow yourselves a good hour to hour and a half from the station to return (15 mins walk each way, plus time at the wheel).

“Amazing place”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

We spent a couple of hours here marvelling at the wonderful scenery and amazing engineering. We couldn't believe how quiet the wheel was in motion. The only very slight downside were the toilets, these could do with updating. All in all lovely, helpful and friendly staff
