Owner description: Designed by the Victorian engineer Robert Casement, the Laxey Wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from Glen Mooar which was part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex.Standing at over 72 feet high the wheel, which is also known as Lady Isabella, has been one of the Isle of Man’s most popular tourist attractions for well over 150 years. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the wheel turning before attempting to climb to the top where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Glen Mooar Valley. Once back on solid ground you can walk through the valley to find the Great Laxey Mines – learn about the lives of the miners, walk into the mine audit and take a trip on the Great Laxey Mines Railway which was once used to carry lead and zinc ores from deep inside the Great Laxey Mine.

A must see attraction opn the Isle of Man. The Laxey Wheel is an iconic structure and a true testament to innovative Victorian engineering. Nothing to dislike

An important memorial of the miners and its lives. Awesome views from the top, even in a rainy day. Laxey is a pretty site to visit and enjoy. We have tea there...

One of the best things we visited on a recent trip... stunning views from the top of the wheel and incredible engineering (although that doesn't usually interest me).
Found the whole area fascinating - we went to the little mine (you don't go far in, but enough to understand what the miners would feel like). There was also a walk further up the path, which we didn't do as we were off to catch the train up Snaefell. Recommend 2 hours for a visit, thou longer if you want to go further up the hill.
I would also recommend the walk down to the beach at old Laxey if it is a fine day - nice pub with tables by the stream, or ice cream overlooking the harbour. We did this after our trip up the mountain - it rounded our day off nicely!

We felt we had to visit the wheel as it is one of the Island's most famous sights but we were completely enthralled and would recommend this to anyone. The scale of the engineering is impressive but more surprising is how quiet it is. There are plenty of other interesting features on the site and we would have stayed longer had it not rained. Free entry for UK National Trust members.
