Well worth a visit. Has been restored by volunteers. You travel a short distance from the washing floor under the road and along Laxey Glen and enter the old lead mine ans see how it was mined in the 1880's -1900's

This attraction is the result of the hard work of a small number of volunteers, mainly railway and mining enthusiasts, and represents the original method of transporting mining products from the mines at Snaefell to the refining areas within the village of Laxey. A terrific achievement by all concerned!!

This railway is just cute! It’s a short line run with two small steam engines with a single carriage that can maybe fit eight to ten persons for the most.
It was a very funny memory of our visit to Laxey!

We can’t complain about the £2 fare to ride it. The hard work and expense that must have gone into the restoration of this little piece of history must have been quite substantial and we’re happy to support the continuing operation of this treasure!

We have great admiration for the people who work and volunteer to keep this line running as an integral part of the heritage of the Laxey village and the history of the mining industry in Isle of Man for all locals and visitors to experience and enjoy!

It is the shortest line we’ve ever been on at only ¼ mile in length. It is also the smallest engines we’ve ever seen and ridden on! An amazing feat of engineering to be able to replicate the Ant and Bee perfectly! The entrance is only wide enough for one person at a time to climb inside - head and body bent over to get in. There is just enough clearance room for your head when seated in a sardine-tin sort of arrangement inside. No time to want personal space in here! You’ll be knowing your neighbours well enough by the time you emerge on the other end!

We got on board at the Mines yard end by the footpath to the Laxey wheel, so we went one-way to the Laxey valley gardens where the railway shed / ticket booth / souvenir stall is located.

The staff were all so very nice and answered my husband’s (railway enthusiast) questions with joy and enthusiasm!

You’re clearly got to love your job to work here! The driver’s seat is perhaps the most
challenging…stooping at the front of the engine on a little stool! He’s got to remember to stay low and watch out for the tunnel roof! You’ve got to be agile & flexible to drive the engine!

This was our shortest steam ride ever and definitely one of the most memorable!
We would recommend to anyone visiting Laxey to try to ride this little piece of history while you’re there!
