“Fantastic Camping Trip at Wing Hall”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2013

I stayed at Wing Hall in August with friends and family and had a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

Unlike some of the reviews i have read, the staff were both friendly and welcoming on arrival and at the veranda cafe and farm Shop (which i have to say is stocked full of lots of lovely goodies). The veranda cafe offers great food and delicious hime made cakes, aswell as live music on the Saturday night which we all enjoyed a lot.

The actual campsite itself is set in beautiful rolling countryside, and there was a real family feel to it what with the sites chickens roaming around and lots of wooded areas for the kids to play freely and safely in.

This is the 3rd time i have been to Wing Hall camping and every year both myseolf and the kids look forward to coming back the next year.

Wing hall is set in beautiful surroundings and has so much potential... Sadly the staff on arrival were unwelcoming and unhelpful,. It only takes a second to smile and this would have made the world of difference. The tent pitch was very sloping but the chickens and the friendly goose were a welcoming sight! If only some money could be spent on the toilets and showers, this site could be amazing... The 'tourist info' was a shed with a fridge, a freezer, a hair dryer, out of date literature and several thousand spiders..,, the veranda cafe seems nice enough although the staff need to learn some customer service and how to smile......all in all, we had a good time (weather was fab) but, we could have had an amazing time if only the staff realised what an amazing place it is......

Spent two nights here camping. The first pitch we were given was in an uneven field and there was no room for the tent on the flat bit! However we were able to move to another location which was much better. The toilets and showers could be better maintained but i have been in worse! The showers were unpredictable sometimes it was freezing cold and other times it was boiling hot, but for two nights it was fine. Washing up sinks made great seats for the chickens as quite often they were often sitting in them! Maybe a fence around the washing area would be an improvement... however it did make me laugh! Overall the stay was good but facilities could be improved.

I recently stayed at Wing Hall camping with my family and had the most wonderful weekend! Like most people I had read some rather negative reviews but was pleasantly surprised when we got there.
We were warmly welcomed and pitched in a lovely field with a fantastic rolling hillside view.
My family and I camp a lot and know not to shower with the masses between 7.00am and 10.00am and always got a lovely hot shower! Isn't it obvious to people that when you are camping in a field there isn't a super sized hotel boiler churning out hot water for everyone? Apparently not!
The veranda cafe was excellent. We are rather lazy at cooking when camping and as we are only 3 people, treated ourselves to lunches and dinners which were Devine!
The farm shop is a gem for those who do cook on stoves supplying everything you need.
I would fully recommend to anyone wishing the real camping experience.
The family who run Wing Hall were lovely and my daughter even got to help collect the hens eggs for the farm shop.
I will be booking a weekend next summer without a doubt.

We stayed at Wing Hall for my daughters 5th Birthday. It was our first time camping and we went with friends.

Wing is really close to Rutland Water so we stopped here for the morning for a lovely morning (parking isn't cheap though!). We then drove to Wing Farm and checked in quickly and found our pitch very easily (we were in 99 and 100 which directly overlook the pigs and chickens with lovely views behind and no other tents/vans to block the view). As per previous posts the chickens run about quite happily which was a lovely treat for our urban daughter who stalked them whilst we got the tents up.

We went over to the cafe/bar and had a snack and drink. Prices seemed a bit steep for a campsite however the coffee is probably one of the best cups I have had outside of Italy. The lovely farm shop also does take away hot drinks which go well with the beautiful cakes they also sell.

Toilets were clean and although we decided to skip showers for one night we did overhear that there had been no hot water all weekend!

We did our own food however the evening we stayed there was a Bar-B-Q (about £10-14 for a burger, wedges and salad) with music and our pitch was near enough to hear this which was nice to have a night cap to. The kids were way too excited to go to bed early so we all ended up having an early night. I was suprised by how well I slept however the campsite was lovely and quiet and even in the morning we woke naturally about 7.30 to blazing sunshine and crazy chickens wandering around again. Oh, watch your food too as they will quite blatantly pinch food from your stove!

All in all we hade a lovely time in a basic but clean and peaceful place and will definately go again.

Room Tip: Pitch 99 or 100 for lovely views

We decided to spend Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday away at short notice and having already seen the reviews of Wing Hall we called to make a last minute booking which went fine as we only have a small two person tent and don't need electric hook up.
The site is very much "back to basics" and none the worse for that. We didn't use many of the facilities apart from the toilets (perfectly adequate though more would be better) and the fresh water points (ditto).
The views are great and the proximity to the lovely towns of Oakham and Stamford is very handy.
The only fly in our ointment had nothing to do with Wing Hall - it was to do with the nearby village pub,The King's Arms, which is easily reached via a footpath from the campsite (take a torch!!!!).
First off are their prices for drinks. We live about forty miles from Wing and in my locals I pay £3.00 to £3.10 for a pint of Marston's Pedigree. I was somewhat shocked to see £3.60 a pint scrawled on the prices chalkboard (had they put their prices up for the Bank Holiday weekend?) however their is no alternative within walking distance so we placed our orders. My partner had a half pint of cider which was similarly expensive. This was at 9.45 PM. At 10.10 PM I went to the bar for another round. "Sorry, we shut at 10.00" was the reply. On a Sunday in the UK in 2013!!! "I didn't hear you ring the bell or shout 'Last orders' I replied. "Oh, we don't do that. It is written on the board outside". "Er, its dark" I countered. All to no good. So, if you choose to use The King's Arms, take plenty of money and get your drinks in early.
This should not detract from Wing Hall which was great. We would consider going again but would be wary of revisiting the pub.

Room Tip: Going to the local pub? Take a torch, plenty of money and get your orders in early.

We stayed here over the bank holiday weekend and had a fantastic time. We were slightly dubious given some of the very ropey reviews of this place we read in advance but happy to say none of these emerged while we were there.

The campsite is a real traditional one, not acres of short cut grass and concrete, more like proper camping in a field. Some of the pitches are a little uneven but you just have to make do really and go back to the ancient art of putting your tent in the right place. We arrived and found someone else in the pitch we were given but the one next door was free so we pitched in there. Pitch allocation seems to be a bit of an art and finger in the air method as people arrived on Sunday who had also been given the pitch we were supposed to be in despite others still being in it. All very confusing but thankfully passed without too much unpleasantess.

The site is well equipped and despite being very busy and virtually full it never felt too much like you had to queue or that people were in your face. It rained heavily for hours on Saturday night and parts of the site (particularly the the entrance to the chicken field), were very muddy and rutted but nothing too extreme. Despite the rain I never had to wear wellies and all our clothes came home virtually mud free.

Despite the mud, the showers and toilets always seemed relatively clean and no worse than other campsites I've been too. There was always hot (or at worst warm water) whenever we showered. The reviews about cold water seemed harsh and you just have to accept that you cannot run by your normal routine when you are camping. Some of the toilets are however quite a way from the further pitches but its a big site so you can't really do much about it.

The water in the washing up areas however always did seem to be cold so heres a tip. Buy a bowl, boil a kettle and wash up at your tent. We learnt this trick fairly quickly after our first attempt at trying to use the site faciltiies and this seemed to work well and saved lugging pots and pans over to the sinks, again which were some way from our pitch.

Cafe/restaurent are lovely, well appointed and a nice varied menu. Turned into a bar in the evenings looking over the main lawn with good selection of wine and beers. Didn't eat there but did have drinks and wonderful cakes and the food that was being churned out look very good. The only part of the bad reviews we read in advance which we agree with is that the prices seem a little steep for a campsite cafe although they do use all locally sourced and quality products so probably to be expected I guess.

The site is perfect for kids, lots of exploring space, chickens running wild and lots to look at and do. Given the number of people there over the weekend it stayed fairly quiet and seemed to attract a good standard of clientele compared to some more 'Butlins' type sites we've stayed at.

On the whole we had a great time and cannot really fault it. Can imagine if you got on one of the very uneven pitches or expected a few more home comforts/less mud this site might annoy you slightly but we had no real gripes.

We will definately be back.
