Wing Hall Estate

We made a last minute weekend booking and initially found there wasn't anything available in the Rutland area, so we were very pleased to find a 2 bed wing Hall cottage was free ( @ £98 per night). I knew that the cottage was going to be away from the main camp site. c 1/2 mile, but this wasn't a problem for us. However, the cottage did have a very musty smell. Fortunately it was a lovely sunny weekend so we were able to keep the windows open a lot of the time to air the cottage and were also able to sit outside in the large front courtyard (shared with cars, but still room for the children to play badminton).

It was a very basic cottage, though served us fine as a base. It was convenient to walk from here to the fabulous village pub where we enjoyed delicious meals both nights.

Our biggest frustration was the difficulty in getting the £50 deposit back. when we checked out the man said he would put the deposit straight back on my credit card but when the next bill came it wasn't there. I rang again and was assured it would be put back on. Again it was not. So after 3 phone calls and 1 email it was finally put on c 2 months after our visit with the reason given that it was a late booking. So, I would just advise everyone to double check they do get their deposit returned.

We loved Rutland and wing is an ideal spot for cycling round the lake. It was c 2 miles on quiet roads to the edge of the lake and then a 22 mile round route with 6 mile extension into the peninsular. Virtually all the route is along shoreline cycle tracks or minor roads so perfect for families. There are also plenty of places to stop for views and refreshments including a nature reserve and the beautiful Normantum church, We made a day of it and had a fabulous time. My children aged 11 and 9 enjoyed it too.

Another lovely place to visit from Rutland is Isaac Newton's home at Woolsthorpe manor. This was really interesting and included an interactive science exhibition which the children found very interesting.

Family short break to Rutland, I was recommended Wing Hall from a colleague who camped there, thought I'd upgrade to holiday cottage for a couple of nights.

Wing Hall itself seemed very nice, good basic camping facilities, nice hall, chickens running around, nice cafe (if slightly expensive, sausage cob £6.95 - nice though). Was surprised when we checked in that holiday cottages weren't part of estate but located about a mile away in village.

Cottage was cramped, dirty, smallest double bed in world and had wasps nest outside front door. Contacted site and exterminator came to poison nest, so we had very angry wasps nest outside front door. This was particularly upsetting for my daughter.

Strong musky smell (and dead wasps) in cottage, I put this down to lack of air so opened windows before we went out. Actual cause seemed to be the bedding which reeked of damp, we got home late so had to stay, so I was forced to put clean t-shirts on pillow to sleep. Wife and I couldn't fit in the double.

Generally very dirty, carpet, lights, curtains, shower, all awful. Think very very low quality foreign hostel.

We left after first morning and lady at shop said refund would be given. Despite numerous phone calls where nobody would talk to me and unanswered emails it eventually came through after about two weeks when I contacted credit card company.

There people are rude, incompetent and don't care about customer service.

If you want to risk £12 a night camping, you may well get away with it. At nearly £100 a night it is close to illegal and certainly a disgrace to the lovely Rutland area.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else. You have been warned.

Having recently stayed in one of their cottages I would not recommend it, it smelt of damp, nothing worked as it should do and the beds looked filthy. I have read other reviews and it would seem that I am not the only person to discover how extremley rude these people are. Also it would seem that they think nothing of finding a excuse to keep your deposit, putting the phone down on you and then not replying to emails of phone calls. I am appalled that they can get away with treating people as they do. Most definately the worst place I have ever had the misfortune to stay, I will not be back.

We stayed in one of the cottages, which was tiny, bed linen was damp and did not look clean, the TV did not work and the shower made a high pitch scream. We paid a £50 deposit which they said they would refund on departure, 10 days later when we chase our deposit up, we are told that there is a hole in the microwave and a t towel has a stain on it, we used the microwave once to reheat a curry and certainly did not notice it blowing a hole in the microwave door, which would be a worry as microwave possibly faulty and very dangerous. When we left the property we were told to leave the keys in the door, it took someone 10 days to get back to us having obviously not checked the cottage|cupboard. Having emailed and getting no reply, we then rung them only to have the phone put down on us and subsequent phone calls ignored. These people warrant being on Rogue Traders, extremely rude and unpleasant, as someone else on here states........AVOID AVOID AVOID.

I stayed at Wing Hall in August with friends and family and had a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

Unlike some of the reviews i have read, the staff were both friendly and welcoming on arrival and at the veranda cafe and farm Shop (which i have to say is stocked full of lots of lovely goodies). The veranda cafe offers great food and delicious hime made cakes, aswell as live music on the Saturday night which we all enjoyed a lot.

The actual campsite itself is set in beautiful rolling countryside, and there was a real family feel to it what with the sites chickens roaming around and lots of wooded areas for the kids to play freely and safely in.

This is the 3rd time i have been to Wing Hall camping and every year both myseolf and the kids look forward to coming back the next year.

Wing hall is set in beautiful surroundings and has so much potential... Sadly the staff on arrival were unwelcoming and unhelpful,. It only takes a second to smile and this would have made the world of difference. The tent pitch was very sloping but the chickens and the friendly goose were a welcoming sight! If only some money could be spent on the toilets and showers, this site could be amazing... The 'tourist info' was a shed with a fridge, a freezer, a hair dryer, out of date literature and several thousand spiders..,, the veranda cafe seems nice enough although the staff need to learn some customer service and how to smile......all in all, we had a good time (weather was fab) but, we could have had an amazing time if only the staff realised what an amazing place it is......

Spent two nights here camping. The first pitch we were given was in an uneven field and there was no room for the tent on the flat bit! However we were able to move to another location which was much better. The toilets and showers could be better maintained but i have been in worse! The showers were unpredictable sometimes it was freezing cold and other times it was boiling hot, but for two nights it was fine. Washing up sinks made great seats for the chickens as quite often they were often sitting in them! Maybe a fence around the washing area would be an improvement... however it did make me laugh! Overall the stay was good but facilities could be improved.
