We went to the Surna on a Saturday night. I can admit that the food was very nice, however this was overcast by the poor level of service.
Bearing in mind the restaurant was not full, the 20 minutes to wait until even drinks were brought to the table was unsatisfactory, especially as the wine I ordered was not what arrived. The head waiter was flustered & passed this on to his staff, who also became flustered as a result. They did not know who was ordering what, forgot to ask if ready for orders and even adding extra orders to the bill. Getting angry at your fellow staff and being rude to them in full view of customers is not very professional either. These actions from staff you could see as a direct result of the actions from the head waiter at the time, not necessarily that the waiters were poor at their job.
I have been to some spectacular Indian restaurants over the years, and hearing that this has awards etc, I can only imagine comes from the food itself & not the service and atmosphere of this restaurant.

We love this restaurant - amazing service, amazing food. It is by far the best Indian in the area and we travel out of our way for a takeaway because the quality is so good. The staff are charming and it is well worth asking them to recommend a dish. Excellent!

Despite Indian food not being at the top of our preferred cuisine choice, having lived in Barton for year we eventually decided to visit the Surma. Without doubt the food is the best Indian food we have eaten so much so it has now become a firm favourite.

The service is always attentive and welcoming. The food is phnomenal, curries that taste authentic and deliver more than just heat. Try the tandoori chicken - without doubt the most tender chicken we've eaten. We visited almost bi-weekly until we moved from Barton in June so could recommend practically every dish.

Given both myself and partner work in the food industry and are self proclaimed foodies we rarely feel compelled to pen a review. This place deserves its positive review and is without doubt worth the effort to visit.

Indian food is my first choice when away from home this has given me plenty of experience at both the good and bad of this cuisine. The Surma is in my top 10% of indian restaurants. The service was superb and very friendly. The food was wonderful, full of taste, well presented but with a pleasing kick of heat that did not mask the great flavours they present in the food.

The food here is not only great but it is really good value as well. My meals came to £14.50 and £16.50 respectively both were for starter, main, rice and chapati.

On a visit to the area, we booked this on the strength of other TripAdviser reviews plus a look at their menu online that had some different dishes. Tried to book for 8pm but it was already fully booked which we took as a good sign. Had poppadoms to start which came with a very wide selection of pickles, including a beetroot one we'd never seen before. Main dishes included Ilachi Gosht, lamb flavoured with garlic and ginger plus Surma Chicken that had heat and a deep flavour. Both were excellent and the only weakness was a slightly underdone naan but at that point the place was at capacity and I'm sure it would've been changed if we'd asked. The bill was lower than we thought it would be too. Overall it was excellent and would happily recommend to anyone.
