“Rustic - Cascada de las Animas”
Reviewed 17 February 2012

A cabin as you would imagine it, small quaint and rustic. This place is in a beautiful part of Cajon del Maipo. Lots of things to do from futbol, to a play area for kids to hiking to kayaking to a zip line. Lots of cabins throughout the reserve. Very rustic, we went in May, onset of winter and enjoyed the facilities.

First, the positives: the activities we did - zip wire and white water rafting where great, staff really friendly, good experience overall. Water is more cafe con leche than crystal clear...still didn't spoil the fun.
But, the restaurant is a disaster, complete disaster. They can't do anything right - first day the chicken I ordered was seriously undercooked. One dinner there we had eight issues in one meal ranging from taking so long to bring our drinks that we gave up waiting, to bring two of the same dish, to forgetting to bring things we ordered. Understaffing is partly the problem, when they're not serving the waitresses are helping with the cooking!
Finally, we had booked a wine tour for our last day, we had booked it weeks previously but the agent forgot to book it with the vineyard. We weren't told they couldn't do the time we had expected till the moment we were due to leave, then we were given three completely different versions of what had gone wrong. Risible.

Overhanging the Maipo river, Cascada is worth the trip out from Santiago. The restaurant/bar offers good food and a friendly atmosphere. Our riding holiday was unforgettable, riding through landscapes which are the stuff of dreams.

Visited the cascadas before sun-set. Lovely view over the mountains, which were tinted in the evening sunlight. Retreated for a really delicious meal to the restaurant afterwards. Super nice atmosphere, you can choose between sitting in the cozy atmosphere inside or lounge on the sofas outside with the sound of the river flowing nearby.

A very lovely evening indeed!

There are also plenty of activities on offer which unfortunately we didn't have time for but worth coming back for another time.

I had higher expectations of the place based on reviews. The area and the setting are spectacular, and worth a visit. However the property is a mixed bag. Touted as a nature reserve, functions more as a youth camp, and has a busy schedule of activities all of which you have to pay for and are advertised , which mixes a "nature reserve" with a "all inclusive adventure park". To visit the actual waterfalls by yourself you have to open a locked door leading to a bridge and sign a release of liability. The key is given to you if you leave a document at the front desk. Does it sound like a "nature reserve" to you? I can only speculate about the appeal to previous customers who post here. Maybe it is the all inclusive nature of the activities, rafting, horseback riding, etc. Restaurant has unrestricted wifi, which lads to hordes of tourists with their apple computers (no kidding, I could not see a single PC) loudly skyping to their friends and preventing other customers from enjoying the meals. I stayed at the hostel, a very spartan room, too far way from the main area to walk, but very cheap. I would probably look for something else if I return to the Cajon del Maipo. A word about the personnel, as usual, very helpful and friendly, with the lone exception of the female Dr Jeckyl-Mr Hide who sits in the reception area.

Room Tip: The hostel is too far from the main. Do not choose unless you have a car

We just stayed in one of the new Cascada Lodges. The surrounding nature is already a treat in itself, and also the setting for the dinner at the Cascada riverside restaurant was amazing, but all that was even topped with the accomodation in one of the new lodges. Unique architectural design offering an extremely comfi and cosy space with a very special atmosphere, which makes you want to relax and hang out as long as possible.
Waking up in the morning with this big window right in front of the bed offering a view of these majestic mountains and green trees bathing in the morning sun was nearly too good to be true.

Had 3 nights at the hostel and after initially liking the place that much we added on an extra 2 nights in a cabin Hostel was great and we had the place to ourselves. Location of the main area and cabins is fantastic, great back drop of the mountains with lots of activities. The cabins were dotted around the woodland and the site had a great little restaurant with free wifi, bonus.
We did however find some of the staff a little unhelpful, for example we went to eat dinner one night and were told the restaurant was shut due a wedding. We were not advised of this early in the day when having lunch and when we asked about somewhere else to eat they didnt really help or care that we needed to eat. We ended up having to get a taxi 15km back in to town just to get some food.
Also when we came to check out of the hostel and move to a cabin the staff would not let us check in before 2pm even though the cabin was available. We were then also told we would not be able to do any walks without guides even though we had done several walks the previous days without a guide. Unable to do any walks and nowhere to go we ended up not staying for the extra 2 days to which a particular staff member did not really care. I must stress that not all the staff were unhelpul, the restaurant and hostel staff were fantastoic and I believe the guides were good to.
All in all it's a beautiful setting but don't expect the staff to help you unless you are booking a trip.

Room Tip: Get a taxi collectivo from the main Mercedes metro station, should cost about1,1000 pesos per person...
