“Wow”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2014 via mobile

A group of thirteen of us went to this establishment last night. We have all visited on several occasions and never had any problems. Last night was no exception. There had been a fresh fish delivery from Brixham so the specials' incorporated many of these delicious items. Pollock, gurnard, sea bass, halibut all served with imaginative sauces. Fish eaters heaven. As well as the specials there was also the regular menu with choices to please every palate and at reasonable prices. (the fish dishes were on the expensive side, but fish IS expensive to buy anywhere). As mentioned we had all visited this establishment previously and we knew the size of the portions served so none of us had a starter. Our orders were taken by the very friendly waitress who was very pleasant and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed including jugs of iced water on the table. As everything is cooked to order we did have probably a 25 minute wait but were able to catch up on everyone's news and the time passed quickly. My choice of salmon with a shrimp sauce, sauté potatoes and four vegetables was out of this world and by the empty plates left by the rest of our party, the choice everyone made was obviously spot on. No room for puds. but the after dinner coffee and mints went down a treat. In a word - superb.

“Always great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 December 2013

Went here again two weeks ago after Chef Pete advised the specials menu had been changed , table for 6. Some great Greek starters and fab winter comfort food for mains , 2 in the party had game pie and loved it , they used to own their own pub and said what would have made the evening would be a choice of Greek wine. Liver and bacon x 2 , again fantastic beautifully cooked and the venison Wellington was to die for , made my fish loving husband change tact for the evening! Good choice on the wine list for red wine drinkers , white wine house choice has changed and is not as good as the previous option , wine by the glass good.
Good cooking and good value for money, friendly service and always consistent , the only place to eat in the local area.

“Good food, warm welcome”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2013 via mobile

We stopped here for lunch the other day and thoroughly enjoyed it. The welcome was as warm as the log fire. It's not a huge menu but the food was excellent and portions generous. I had a delicious steak pie and my wife had fish and chips both priced at £11. There was also a Greek twist to the menu which I suspect harks back to the landlord's roots. Some good ales on tap as well. Only downside for us was not allowing dogs in the bar.

“Lovely Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 November 2013

Fresh fish and chips - cod from Brixham, proper chips and a delicious mango and coconut cheesecake - with an alcoholic drink for under £20. The owners and local publicans were very friendly. Great place to relax.

“Fantastic Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 October 2013

After my many visits to the Packhorse I thought it was time i wrote a review & gave credit where credits due. The Packhorse is our number one choice of places to go as a family and somewhere we are always confident to take guests or recommend to people. Whether its a visit in the summer to enjoy the well kept courtyard area or a visit in the winter to enjoy the two roaring log fires its definitely worth a visit. The pub is run by 3 generations of the same family, whenever we have been we have always been warmly welcomed at the door by the grandfather of the family. A true gentleman & always impeccably dressed. In our experience we have always found the pub to be spotlessly clean and the staff accommodating & friendly whether its just us as a family of 4 or when we have visited as a larger party where we have taken advantage of the private dining room that can be reserved for special occasions. There is a good choice of local real ales on offer which are always kept perfectly as well as a wine list to suit all tastes and pockets. The restaurants menu is excellent and is accompanied by an equally impressive choice of specials. If your a fish lover then you won't be disappointed as this place boasts a fresh fish menu that changes daily, that's where my weakness lies whereas my husbands weakness is the Rib Eye steak. My sister swears by the mushroom stroganoff which has no flour so perfect for her Celiac allergy. I'm not quite sure what Cumbrian Cowboys review was about, and where he found a choice of 14 burgers on the menu is beyond me as the only burger available is on the children's menu. Maybe he has the wrong Packhorse! It's no wonder that this establishment has a loyal local following. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Packhorse experience to anyone but don't take my word for it, get down there and try it for yourself!
