“Loved the setting and the staff and the scenery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2011

We stayed in a bungalow which was beautiful and right near the water (although not on it) with a nice stroll along the paths with tropical flowering and fruiting trees.

The staff were very friendly with bird watching tours and nightly firefly spotting.

Of course if you're into diving this is a mecca, the diving and water is awesome and the guides very good, best I've come across in 20 years of diving.

On a field trip to Kimbe, I stayed in Walindi Hotel. It's about 45 or 60 minutes from the Airport, the way there leads you through mainly palm oil plantations, the town doesn't offer anything. It was highly delighting to find the Walindi Resort, a beautiful place with many small huts, constructed in the traditional way from mainly wood and leaves. The resort is stretched over a rather large area along the beach, designed in a tropical garden style. In the center, there is the main building with a pool, benches for sun bathing and the kitchen. The dinner consists of a buffet and is taken by all the guests, so it is easy to get to know people.
Walindi has been offering diving for a long time. I was only able to take one dive in a reef directly off the coast. It was a beautiful wall with an exceptionally high diversity in corals and small fish. I can compare it to a similar site at Coral Coast in Fiji, which was stunning - but doesn't reach the diversity of this place. It's a bit more expensive than normal, maybe 10 USD. Gear is rather expensive, too.
It's NO PLACE for BEACH VACATION - there is a small beach in front of main building, that's it.
Which I sadly couldn't do is taking the long trip to an island, about an hour off Walindi. Pictures on the walls witness Orcas, hammerhead sharks and Mantas, so I suppose it must be awesome.
Staff is very nice and easy to deal with, some are a little reserved, but still very helpful. The fact that the dive instructors mostly stay there since 3 to 10 years is a sign that even them consider this part of the ocean unbeatable.
Other possible activities include hiking up a near volcano, but I didn't have more time to explore the area.
Prices are good, especially compared with Port Moresby and Lae. Breakfast is not just continental, it's very rich. INTERNET is ONLY AVAILABLE at MAIN BUILDING.
I definately recommend the place and hope, I will be able to return for the other dives and hiking.

I stayed at Walindi before and after a liveaboard trip. The owners and staff looked after me fabulously. I was particularly impresses with the integrity with which they operate respective to the community.. not just some colonial-types out to live a dream at the expense and labor of the locals. Their obvious love of the country and care for the staff was refreshing.
Bungalows are great, airy and roomy! Food was always varied, and I never lacked for enough condiments, sauces, etc... despite the high costs of such imported items in this remote place!
I hope to return to Walindi to dive with them at their great local reefs!

Just excellent, wonderful diving, a nice but not luxurious hotel and stuff that welcomes you as a part of the family - they couldn't do any better. I liked very much to spend a vacation in a nice and safe place in PNG without having the impression to life in a completely isolated resort. The stuff lives with their families on the area of the hotel, this results in a very familiar atmosphere. The diving is just world class by any meaning - sea life, diversity, dive guides and service at the base.

I've already written a review for this hotel, but my wife and I went back again to Walindi in April of 2009 for a day before and a day after a dive cruise. Unfortunately, this trip was plagued with problems and I think it's important to mention that without the kindness of the Walindi staff these problems would have made this trip more of a disaster than it was.
On the way in JetStar Airlines lost all my photo gear (Two complete digital SLR underwater photo systems.). The manager of the on-site dive operation loaned me all his very high end gear for the entire cruise which leads me to problem number two.
About two thirds of the way through the cruise we received word that my father in law had passed away in California. We were in the middle of the Bismark Sea on a boat. One phone call and the Walindi staff rearranged all of our flights out of PNG, canceled our reservations for the night after the cruise was over and I have yet to see a bill for any of it including a bunch of long distance phone calls to JetStar in Singapore to find my photo gear. By the way they also found my gear and had it waiting at the resort when we docked.
I think the true measure of any business, resort or otherwise is how they perform in a difficult situation. Walindi gets 5 stars from me for that category and my wife and I will never forget what they did for us without hesitation.
I'm hoping to go back to PNG in 2011 and I am looking forward to staying at Walindi again.

This resort is located in Kimbe Bay on New Britain Island, near to the small town of Kimbe, in the Bismarck Sea area of north east Papua New Guinea. The resort is seafront and has very large grounds that you can stroll around, looking at the flowers and butterflies. It is well kept, I’m sure partly due to the prolific number of staff that Walindi seems to employ. Most times, it appears that there are far more staff than guests! There is a pleasant atmosphere about the place, with the local staff seeming to enjoy playing a part in the enterprise.

The rooms are good and clean. There is a daily service, including a free-of-charge daily laundry. There is a small kitchenette where you can make tea/coffee etc. No TV or internet in the rooms, but the main communal areas do have free wifi internet access, albeit frustratingly slow.

There is a small swimming pool and beach volleyball court, a bar and an indoor and outdoor dining area. The food is served buffet style, and is pretty much all simple Western fare with salads. There is usually a choice of a few meat or fish dishes. However, being vegetarian this set up did not suit me since there was next-to-nothing for me to eat at the buffets. I did try to rectify this situation by sending advanced recipes, by providing detailed descriptions on arrival of the food I eat, but it took several days and the intervention of one concerned Divemaster, before I finally began to get food that I even vaguely appreciated. The food was the biggest let down to me. Only on the final 3 days of the 9 was I offered dinners that were interesting and tasty. Prior to that, the food offered was bland and very much starch-based. There was often no dessert either. It seems that Walindi would benefit with having 1 member of staff being responsible for guests dining; currently no one seems to be in charge and that was the problem.

The dive operation at the resort employs local Papuans as dive guides and this works well as they are well trained in spotting small critters. The dive day tends to be 2 or 3 dives per day and per trip, depending on guest preference. The dive boat is pretty robust and efficient (18-20 knots). It is not the most comfortable boat in the world due to small size, but it is at least carpeted for basic comfort. The biggest drawback here is that there is no lavatory on board – can be a big problem after lunch! The dive sites I’d rate as “good” (better than average but below very good). Most sites offer wall diving with hard corals, huge gorgonian fans and sea whips. The inner sites are pretty enough but lack big fish. The outer sea mounts have big fish, but these sites are limited in number.

One of my pet hates is that the dive centre insists on all divers having dive computers – a good way to make extra money out of equipment rentals. Firstly, they must inform you of this condition before you book (they do not do this), and secondly the reason given is that it improves safety. However, this is not always the case and is against PADI standards.
