Went for New Years Eve and stayed the night.
Very good evening with excellent attentive service. Food was very good BUT don't expect to get much in the way of vegetables. THREE baby carrots and TWO tiny cherry tomatoes do NOT constitute vegetables. What is the problem with show off chefs??
The "band" was good but far too LOUD. It was a relatively small room but still they had to use amplifiers! We literally could not hear ourselves talk. Ridiculous!

Bedroom was small and clean but carpet looked as though it had not been vacuumed in a while. Great to have a bath and shower with lots of hot water.

Breakfast big disappointment. Only ONE person serving which meant service was very very SLOW. Why do so many hotels seem to think its not necessary to give good service at breakfast? The baked beans were actually COLD and had to be sent back.

Would I stay there again? No

Thank you very much for your review.
I am sorry you felt there was a lack of vegetables, out staff are trained to offer more to all diners during their meals.
The evening was advertised as a dinner dance with live music so it would always appear louder than recorded music
Breakfast in a hotel of this style is never rushed and we pride ourselves in allowing our geust to relax and enjoy their breakfast in a leisurely fashion. In this day and age everything is always at a fast pace and sometimes our allowing a refined and enjoyable experience can be construed as slow rather than relaxing. As a small hotel, 15 rooms, one member of serving staff has always sufficed
Should you change your mind and wish to stay again you will always be welcome
Kind regards

We stayed for 1 night on the 18th December 2011 it was perfect. Eva the lovely receptionist was so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble what an asset she is to the Hotel .. We stayed in Room 1 which was perfect king sized bed in a spacious room with feature fireplace. Lovely breakfast and loved sitting in the fireplace room after. Would highly recommend this Hotel.

Room Tip: Room 1 was perfect

First off, and not diminishing from my overall score of excellent, you have to understand that if you like the seductive, visual perfection that chain hotels can offer you or you don't buy second hand goods or you're very fussy about detail then this really isn't the place for you.

This is an independant hotel. It is used, ancient and slightly tatty and this is called having character. It oozes character. Walk around and discover the hidden away nooks and crannies where you can get a quiet drink next to a fire or sit over a lit well. It smells old, ancient even - not a bad smell but a very dignified odour of the ages.

As with many buildings like this it has sections that are from different eras and the place is a hotch potch of the medeivel and victorian.

The grounds are generous and worth a wander around. As you do, you'll see the decks scattered around the lawns and if you visit in the winter as I did, you'll get an idea of what this place can do in the summer - parties, bands, weddings, concerts, absolutely ideal.

As with any hotel, the building is just bricks and mortar and mean nothing without the people inside that make the place work. And this is what keeps my final score at excellent. Friendly, witty, helpful and from all different parts of the world - an international cast. The lovely Eva, the party organiser, is as into your party plans as you are without interfering or trying to take over. I found the receptionist humorous and fun and the barman slick and professional.

In the morning at breakfast, a guest in our party commented that her poached egg yolk was hard but the breakfast was so nice she didn't care and wasn't going to mention it. Suddenly, a member of staff appeared and asked "would you like me to fetch you a soft poached egg, my apologies". It is all very personal and very competent.

The only suggestions i'd have to improve the place would be keep an eye on the details - bit of varnish here, brass polish there, don't leave Henry the hoover in the coridoor, little things and it might put that extra edge on it. Doesn't bother me but I know it does others.

That said, I love the place. Held my wife's 40th birthday party there and it couldn't have been any better.

Room Tip: Find out if there is a party the night you are staying and ask to have a room as far away as possibl...

Just returned from a three night break with a brilliant deal from booking.com.Room 1 is perfect-quiet,kingsize comfortable bed,and every facility has been thought of very efficient(iron/ironing board, trouser press, mini fridge,tea/coffee making facilities,WI in all rooms, even an alarm clock)The ensuite provided toiletries and had lovely thick fluffy towels.
and spotless clean.
The food is excellent- the full english breakfast is of excellent quality and quantity. The nearby river walk into Canterbury(approx 45mins a bit muddy in places)offers scenic views and is a great way to walk off the breakfast !All staff were polite, helpful and friendly-Jonathan delivered excellent service! VERY RECOMMENDABLE

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room if required(although hotel is in a quiet location)Room 1 has double aspect view...

We booked in for a couple of nights after searching in vain for a reasonably-priced hotel in Canterbury with a car park. We'd seen a brilliant deal on a last-minute website but checked the hotel's own website and got the same deal. We could not fault the room or facilities: spotlessly clean, restful decor and friendly staff. The park and ride to Canterbury - by far the best way to visit - is just two miles away, as is the A2 for easy access to Howlett's zoo park and the Kent Coast. Whitstable, a real gem of a place, is 20 minutes away. After a day's exploring it was great to come back and relax in the residents' lounge with a bottle of wine.

We have spent here just one night and we got here quite late so we have enjoyed it only briefly. Nice living room with a gorgeous fireplace where to enjoy a drink. The room was ok, actually pretty nice. The only problem was the road that was quite close. Not a drama considering I always sleep with earplugs as I wake up easily. Only in the morning it got a bit noisy. Breakfast was good, quite good selection of food. The staff was very kind. the garden is beautiful, and with the autumnal colours it was just stunning. A nice stay, not close to the centre so either drive there or be ready to spend £ 10 catching a cab.
