“Lovely but room for improvements”
Reviewed 29 March 2014 via mobile

Great location
Lovely grounds
A hotel full of charm and character
Amazingly friendly and helpful staff
Fantastic food, both at breakfast and evening meal.

Areas for improvement:
Bathrooms are dated, in need of a complete refurbishment

Rooms are dated, I was looking round my room wondering why it didn't work....then I realised, nothing matched. The carpet was pink, the bed was dressed in purple and the curtains were red and gold. A little thought in the area and the room would have been much improved.

I couldn't use the in room safe for the duration of my stay. When I arrived, the safe door was closed and the member of staff I spoke to, couldn't open it again, although they did try. I would have felt much happier if I could have put some of my belongings in the safe, I was offered a space in the hotel safe at reception.

In summary, I would visit again but I think it is a little over priced, and in some need of modernisation.

We stayed here for a family wedding at the end of December. We had two rooms, one for our teenagers and one us, other family members had rooms big enough for them and their younger children. The hotel itself is quaint, rooms twisting and turning in different directions. Two of our family have mobility issues and although the main areas were fine they chose to stay elsewhere as the bedroom floors had stairs to negotiate.

The meat with the wedding breakfast was lovely and all in all it is an ideal family wedding location. The only thing I would say the public areas are generous giving all ages of the family somewhere different to nestle away from the bustle to talk in the evening, whilst being an advantage this is to the detriment of the atmosphere needed in the disco room if the numbers remaining are not huge.

Also at breakfast it was a nice atmosphere as all of the rooms had been occupied by the wedding guests. The staff are very attentive and it is a lovely setting. Although not a luxury hotel they do what they do well and should suit all generations and budgets at a family gathering.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at this lovely hotel. It is full of historical charm, sloping floors, low doors and some historical information is available about the manor and its origins. The staff is welcoming and appropriately attentive we felt. The breakfast was good and our daughter enjoyed her vegetarian cooked breakfast as well. We didn't eat our evening meal at the hotel, but there were plenty of people around suggesting it is a popular choice. Our room had a strange narrow bathroom rather like a galley kitchen and this is where we felt the hotel needs to get up to speed with the 21st century. The light over the mirror didn't work, the shower curtain didn't reach the top of the shower tray. Even more disappointing the toilet was very stained black inside, the toilet brush heaving and the toilet seat broken. When the toilet was flushed there was a rather unpleasant sewage type smell which left a almost permanent miasm in the bathroom. Our daughter had her own room and said everything was fine, so hopefully this was just focussed in this room. Saying that I retreated to use another toilet at one point and there were some evidence of less than adequate hygiene and cleaning apparatus there as well.
The staff did there best to help and made a rather hapless attempt to get the toilet cleaned up and did replace bulb in the light. However it was a disappointing stay in a hotel which has generally rave reviews.

I am sorry to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations. As you say most reviews are very good and I am looking into housekeeping issues that may have arisen during your visit.
Howfield, is in parts very old and Room 6, where you stayed does have an odd shaped Bathroom, we tend to let this room last.

To secure a better room iplease book direct (01227 733892 or email hotel@howfield.net), rather than use a third party website.

Please accept my apologies for your stay and hopefully if you are in the area again you can experience Howfield at its best.

Booked this at the last minute using late rooms and got a very good rate - £52 BB As it was we were upgraded to a four poster room which was most unexpected. The room and the hotel are very nice and a walk in the grounds is recomended - breakfast was the usual fare but very nice

Took advantage of a midweek DBB in a superior room. Our room was on the ground floor close to the marque and had lovely views of the garden although we had to keep the curtains closed when dressing or undressing. Staff extremely helpful and friendly and the food was excellent. A taxi into Canterbury was about £8 and saved the hassle of trying to find somewhere to park. Had an immediate e-mail after checking out to say we'd left a pair of shoes in the room. Will definately be back.

Lovely room, very affordable price. Wonderful food, a la carte prices as would be expected but special 'two course' or 'three course' prices made it extremely good value. Extremely friendly and accommodating staff. Held the kitchen open when we were a few minutes late. Made us very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. This is what good service should be. The only slight drawback is location. The hotel is just on the outskirts of Canterbury and sadly there are industrial units nearby. However none of this was visible from any part of the hotel and even on a weekday there was no noise at all. Both inside and outside the hotel in their extensive grounds was very quiet. We loved it and will certainly go back.

We chose to stay here rather than in Canterbury so we didn't have to worry about car parking which proved a good choice, although the taxi company suggested by the hotel as giving a discount to hotel customers was more expensive than the return one later at night from the taxi rank!

Comfortable, quiet room with an ample breakfast. Better quality bacon, sausage and scrambled egg would have been nice but generally very good value for money.

We would certainly stay there again.
