Stayed here for a visit to Canterbury University, arrived late (2200 Hrs) and was told that though the kitchen was closed they could "knock up" something, 15 minutes later a really nice Ham salad sandwich arrived saving us a trip into the local area to forage for food.
Polish Girl on reception was warm, friendly, and humorous, and everyone we spoke to were polite and went the extra mile made us feel welcome.
I can take on board some of the previous remarks on the tripadvisor, the Hotel is obviously very old and the building quirky as one would expect with uneven ceilings and floors, I can imagine that if there was any sort of noise (from the function rooms) it would filter in as the walls are obviously thin in places, but we had none of these problems, indeed the room was very quiet, we both had a good nights sleep on comfortable beds, the blackout curtains certainly helped.
Following morning we had a cooked breakfast the following morning, the food was very good and hot when it arrived, once again served by a waiter who was smartly presented and efficient.
Sadly we did not have time to take in the garden and surroundings which are very well attended but it would be well worth taking a walk in the Hotel grounds should the weather permit as there are extensive gardens and lakes to "take in".
Prices for a mid week stay were very competitive and included breakfast, if my daughter chooses to go to University here we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: As the floors are uneven and some of the stairways very steep with turnings, I would suggest that an...

Just got back from celebrating my birthday and have to say that I couldn't have chosen a better place to do so. From the moment of booking through to departure I could not have received a friendlier better service anywhere else. The whole team were extremely efficient and helpful. The food was absolutely excellent starting wig the canapés last night through to the breakfast this morning. The best I've had out in a long time!! I would certainly recommend this place to anyone because of the points mentioned. However the only small downside is the decor. I would say its in need of an update and the you had to run around in the shower in order to get wet it was so feeble!! This would certainly not put me off eating or celebrating here again though as the attention to detail in everything else more than made up for this

Just returned from Howfield Manor literally a couple of hours ago. Was taken there by a friend to celebrate a "special birthday". Have to say that the food from start to finish was absolutely superb, well presented, plenty of it, hot and absolutely lovely. Breakfast this morning was also excellent and, again, more than plenty of it to say the least.

Staff (Alex, Radhu,) and all that we encountered were helpful, cheerful and accommodating.

Rooms quite spacious, fitted out with iron, ironing board and trouser press, also fan. Bathroom nice. Bed very big and very comfortable too I may add. Room/bathroom very clean.

My husband and I stayed for two nights in April - a Friday and Saturday - with another couple.

Good points:
- Dinner at the Old Well restaurant was much better than we'd expected. See separate review.
- Breakfast food was also very good.
- Rooms were spotlessly clean. Bed was comfortable. Furniture wasn't noticably worn.
- Reception staff were excellent, couldn't be more helpful or friendly, from booking through to departure.
- Nice grounds.

Not so good:
- Service as breakfast. Although food came out promptly, nobody checked back anywhere near frequently enough, e.g. for tea/coffee refills.
- Bedrooms are quite dated and could be easily modernised, e.g. with contemporary soft furnishings & paint.
- Bathrooms need a re-fit. A bath with shower curtain, not even curved outwards, is really not great in this day and age.

The hotel clearly relies upon the wedding trade as it's main business. It may be worthwhile checking if a wedding is going on, if you plan a visit. If not, be aware it's likely to be quiet, which can be a positive or negative, depending on your view!

Stayed on business very clean hotel very well managed excellent restaraunt. Staff very friendly restaraunt food excellent and freshly cooked breakfast. They have many wedding venues and I would say that they would provide an excellent reception.

We had a 2 night stay in early March. The hotel seemed very quiet but we were given a ground floor room next to the marqee. The room was rather tired and there only seemed to be one available electric socket so we had to unplug the TV to use chargers etc which made things a bit awkward. There was also a distinct lack of privacy with people walking past our bedroom window so we had to keep the curtains drawn. Fortunately, after checking with reception I was told there was nothing booked in the marquee. The staff we encountered were pleasant. The worst problem was our meal in the restaurant on Friday night. They offer a limited set menu, 2 or 3 courses for a set price. We decided to have a main course and a dessert. After ordering we had to wait OVER AN HOUR for our food! Considering there were only about 10 people in the restaurant this was very poor. When the food finally arrived, the steak was so tough I couldn't cut it. We did complain and were offered our dessert free of charge but the whole experience was a great disappointment. We were told the chef was " having a bad day"!! Breakfast the following day was OK but we certainly didn't want to book another meal for the following night so we had to eat elsewhere. Certainly could do with some improvement.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room away from the marquee attatched to the hotel

Dear mehatsonfire
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback.

We are always happy to offer an alternative room (when not fully booked) if for example guests would prefer not to have a ground floor room.

I have spoken to the waiter who served you and he confirmed that some diners did wait a little longer for main courses that usual. This is due to 2 reasons, firstly the food is cooked to order and secondly there are occasions where several tables order main courses at the same time. This can happen when the later booking for example does not order a starter. I would like to apologise for the comment ‘the chef is having a bad day’ the waiter felt that he was be humorous.

The team at Howfield pride themselves on looking after all guests and the chefs were no doubt all working hard in the kitchen at the time. We will of course be looking into your comments regarding the steak.

A pretty hotel in a pleasant setting. A bit difficult to find as only accessed from one side of the Boughton by pass. Friendly and helpful staff who were flexible with house keeping times ( we were going to a wedding and didn't vacate the room for the day until 12 noon). Good breakfast and lovely evening meal. Would stay again.
