Description: Located in the village of Bridge, just outside Canterbury, The Red Lion is a traditional British pub with a splash of French restaurant flair. Eye-catching from the outside, The Red Lion boasts a uniquely old fashioned exterior brought up-to-date with a lick of light colored paint, while inside is comfortable and cosy, a traditional space with olde worlde charm in its rough beams and pillars the ideal village pub. But while the dcor might be traditional, The Red Lions menu is less so. With the influence of host Rene Renault (from Rennes no less), the kitchen has added French sophistication to locally sourced ingredients -

“All round great experience”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

After yet another indifferent meal endured in Canterbury I thought I must write a review for the Red Lion, which has never let us down. (I don't know why we eat anywhere else) The Red Lion is a very attractive, clean, well maintained historic English pub run by a Frenchman! The food is excellent, good value, very well presented, served piping hot and served with an appropriate vegetable. Helpings are pretty generous - you don't have to attack the cheese and biscuits when you get home. Bread and butter comes as standard. The wine is delicious and you get a generous helping (or I always do), not a third of a glass masquerading as 175ml. Plenty of free parking. When families are present the children tend to be reasonably well behaved, not the headless chicken variety. If villages get the sort of pub they deserve then Bridge must be a really great place to live.

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

Booked in here by chance, and left after a pleasant evening and a substantial meal. Good ambiance and a fair amount of Anglo/French banter among the locals and with the host. Service attentive but not obtrusive. The aspagus and ducks egg starter was excellent, and the pork loin that followed was similarly good and left no room for a dessert! Prices very reasonable, and in all very good value. House wine good. Only downsides - didn't have any sherry, and there is a large dog, who is no problem at all but some would not appreciate his attention! There is a substantial garden area at the back with adjacent kids play area which would be ideal for families - weather permitting.

“a pleasant surprise!”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

stumbled across The Red Lion hoping for a late bite to eat with my partner yesterday. Friendly landlord with a lovely dog (we also had ours with us), we ordered Sausage & Mash and a Burger. Both were very well presented, great portions and tasted great. Could not fault the Sausage & Mash and the bacon in the burger really set it off! Nice, spacious pub and restaurant, we will definitely be back!

“Bank holiday special !!! Not!!”
Reviewed 26 May 2014 via mobile

Special bank holiday menu, time 12.45.................... Read on
Service un,attentive, ordered bloody Marie no Worcester sauce, ordered whitebait with homemade tartare sauce , guess what no tartare sauce, main meal rump steak with garlic butter ,and ordered a pepper sauce , no garlic butter and a pepper sauce as thick as tap water. So if you have no taste buds and like chips that look like they came from macdonalds and don,t want any sauces this is the place for you.

“Great Food!”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

starter, main and dessert tasted great at a very affordable £13.99 deal, options were: homemade, no-nonsense pretentious gastro food, just high quality pub grub: perfect tartare sauce with cornichons and capers, crunchy whitebait, wholesome veggie cream soup with fresh bread; a delicious main course of chicken with bacon and mushrooms in a rich wine sauce with crispy french fries and for dessert the best sticky toffee pudding with luscious caramel sauce! well done, we need more pubs like this in Kent!
