The Moorhen Bed & Breakfast

If you're planning a visit to the Broads and want to sleep on dry land, you won't do much better than the Moorhen. It's situated in the tiny but lovely village of Horning, and you can see the boats go by on the Bure River from some of the bedroom windows. David and Christine are really, really friendly and helpful (without being in your way) and will get you set up with the activities you want - whether that means renting a motorboat, sailboat, or canoe, visiting the peculiarly delightful children's play park called Bewilderwood (which David helped build), or touring the area on foot or by motorcar. (But David believes in not using cars more than you need to, since the Broads are all about boating and the like. He also knows a lot about the local ecosystem and regional history, which he'll gladly share if you ask him. And of course, he can tell you what to expect at each of Horning's several restaurants.)

Our rooms were as clean as can be, simple yet somehow elegant. The breakfasts were possibly the best we enjoyed in our tour of the UK. This is partly down to the fact that David buys his meats from the butcher two doors up the road, who also happens to be the farmer who raises the animals he makes sausages from. And partly due to the fact that Christine makes wonderful preserves, partly from her own garden's produce. And you can get picked up/dropped off at the train station in Wroxham.

By the way, David himself can rent you canoes and suggest itineraries. We took a day trip down to Ranworth Broad and back. While there, we had time to visit the marshland sanctuary (scenic and informative) and climb to the top of a Norman church tower that really does overlook that whole sector of the Broads. Be forewarned, though: the tower steps are rough-hewn and worn, they twist up a narrow helix, and there are trap doors and ladders before you emerge onto (gulp) the roof. Not for the seriously acrophobic, but I don't have the greatest head for heights, and I loved it.

We stayed for a night with our dutch friends and we both had 3 children each and Christine and David made us feel very welcome. We all tumbled in after 2 nights camping and it was a real treat to stay somewhere so good. The breakfast was great and we were made to feel very much at home. They do canoe tours also where they arrange for your luggage to go from b&b to b&b which we are definately going to try out next year. We would highly recommend.

We stayed for one night as this b and b was recommended by Canoe man with whom we were taking an early morning trip. Christine and David, the owners could not have been more helpful in providing information about the area and assuring us we could have breakfast whatever time we arrived back from canoeing. The room , Salhouse, was a beautiful garden room with pation doors, comfy beds and amazingly good size mugs and fresh milk morning and evening!!
Would recommend Moorhen to anyone and we were just sorry it was booked up for the next night or they would never have got rid of us.

The Moorhen has a Silver accolade from Enjoy England because it is deserved. Mine hosts were genuinely welcoming, plenty of choice for breakfast and the twin, garden room we had was private and very quiet.

Horning is a good base from which to enjoy the Norfolk Broads by bicycle and has a good ambience.

Excellent place to stay. Friendly welcome, good sized bright rooms and supurb breakfast. Horning is three miles from Wroxham but if you want to escape the slighly "Blackpool atmosphere" of Wroxham this is the plave to go. The fish restaurant a few doors away is also highly recommended

The owners of this small b&b next to the river bure were really welcoming. Every effort is made to make this place special, attention to detail included chocolates on pillows and fresh fruit salad for breakfast.
Its a pleasure to wake up, look out of the window and watch the boats go past on the river Bure.
Horning, though small has a couple of great places to eat minutes from the Moorhen. The Bure River Cottage Cafe and Swan Inn are worth a visit.
