We've just got back from a lovely weekend break at the Craven Arms. The landlord and staff were so attentive and made us feel very welcome. The place has a nice buzz about it and seemed well used by locals and friends both for drinks and dining. The evening meals and breakfasts were delicious and well presented, our room was well-appointed and warm. The Craven Arms is well worth a stay if you are visiting the Dales.

This small hotel is well located on the A65 to the Lake District near the lovely town of Settle.
The rooms are very basic, but are very clean and ideal for a couple of nights.
The Restaurant however is the jewel in their crown.
Food is beautifully prepared and presented. Very fresh and tasty with great service
I have stayed there twice now and would be happy to go back again.

The Craven Arms is under new management and Nick the landlord cannot be faulted for his warm welcome, and obvious enthusiasm for serving customers. He talked us through his selection of different gins and various tonics (nice that 'G&T' was not simply a Gordons from an optic); and poured generous samples of his two real ales on draught. (I went for the 4% 'Classic' rather than the weaker 'Main Line').
We had not booked, nor were we staying there, but a table was found for us without delay. Whilst waiting for a table we stayed in the bar, which was in truth too brightly lit and lacked any real ambiance or charm, which with a bit of thought and subtlety could be made much more homely. There is some obvious signs of 'work in progress' so hopefully this will be sorted out soon.
Again in the restaurant / dining area, the lighting isn't quite right, the colours of the walls don't really go together (crimson in one area, duck egg green in another) and neither go with the carpet! It needs better decoration, and more attention to 'dressing' to make it cosier and more relaxing. To give an example, there is a lovely big inglenook fireplace, and sitting right inside it is...an enormous red fire extinguisher! I'm guessing H&S demand the fire extinguisher must be kept somewhere accessible, but it just looked comically wrong placed right by the grate!
The food was good. Not exceptional, but good value, well prepared and decently presented. Absolutely no complaints there. We were staying about 7 miles away in a beautiful castle with a penthouse apartment on the castle ramparts and so we could drink a bottle of wine on our apartment balcony we asked if we could have a dessert of cheese & biscuits 'in a doggy bag'. This was a graciously provided for us, and we appreciated that.
Of the two girls serving that night one was very good, the other, well, you could sense she'd really rather be elsewhere...(touches like - we took our bar drinks to the table, and did not order wine, but the wine glasses on the table were not removed until after our main courses were served; the second gin that we ordered for was assumed to be a Gordons, and not the special Scottish gin our host had recommended earlier). Bit picky perhaps but when you eat out a lot you notice things like that.
A few touches and this could be a really good place, I really liked Nick and I hope he can make his mark on this place in a really positive way, and if he reads this review I hope he finds the points I've raised here constructive rather than negative. It's obviously in transition, and I wish them well.

We stayed for two nights as staff on a school trip (students billeted). We knew we were on a winner when Nick the Publican walked out to the coach to greet us. I was away for 4 weeks and this was by far the best breakfast and accommodation we had whilst we were away. He made special effort to cook us an early breakfast and the heated floor in the bathrooms were lovely. Well done Nick. One day I will be back. Ian From Calrossy School Tamworth Australia.

We have just come back from weekend break. It was a birthday treat for my dad. There were 6 of us. The hotel staff are so friendly, the food is all locally sourced and delicious. We couldn't fault the service and the food. I would definitely recommend this hotel and we will definitely be going back. Excellent

We arrived mid-afternoon at The Craven Arms, which is situated some way out of Giggleswick proper - right on the A65. We enjoyed a less-than fulsome welcome from a young lady who it transpired had been working there less than a week and had seemingly been left in charge of the place. We were led through a strange-smelling annexe to a room right out of the back of the property that seemed more like a cell than a B&B room. Road noise was considerable and the room was frankly depressing so we eventually asked to be moved. After discussions with the landlord we were offered an upstairs room that was smaller but at least had a view of the main road and some light. The smell of air fresheners hung heavy in the air, masking something nastier-smelling. The bedding was not ready but as we were going out to a wedding reception for the evening we didn't mind as the landlord assured us that the bed would be made and the travel cot from our previous room would be brought up and placed in the new room. We left the place on that basis. Upon our return at around 2330 we were all tired and ready for bed. Imagine our surprise that the promises of bedding and travel cot were false. When requesting an explanation from the landlord (when he had finished serving all the locals left in the bar) he refused to take any responsibility, blaming 'the girls' that he had asked to sort out the room for him. We then went through the farcical situation of the landlord and one of 'the girls' putting the bedsheets on around us as we prepared baby for bed. Once we had the room back to ourselves we then were kept up at night with the conversation from another room coming through the walls. The next morning's breakfast was served in a friendly manner though was pretty average. The landlord was nowhere to be seen, leaving it to us to check out and to try and obtain a discount for the frankly pathetic performance the previous night. We were offered a paltry £10 off our bill. I'm assuming from the reviews and the excuses the landlord gave us that these are teething problems of a new regime at this pub, but it just isn't acceptable. Bed and breakfast is pretty simple; if at least one of those two isn't working then there's really not much hope...!

Thank you for your review of The Craven Arms.
We are very sorry your visit fell below your expectations and we would be happy if you would like to visit again and show you that we have over come any teething problems we had in our first 2 weeks.
We always try to help our guests with their requests and your very late request to change rooms was not handled as well as we would have hoped.

We are always speaking with our staff to ensure they know correct procedures for all eventualities and although I was not available when you were checking out I could have been with you within 5 minutes had you asked. We have told all staff in future to call us if any of our guests is at all dissatisfied.

We have not had any other negative feed back with the room you were first shown and the noise during the night you mention was a member of your party who was drunk and being disruptive.
This is the only incident we have ever had of this kind and we would hope this is the last as we are a family establishment.
If you would like to discuss your stay I am always available to go over your issues and would actively welcome the opportunity, I can be reached on 01729 825627.
Regards
Nick Young
