“What a hidden gem!”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

How many people have known of the Carpetbaggers? I certainly hadn't. But what a find, on a dull cloud covered morning I stumbled upon this little gem. All about the O.S.S. (later to become the CIA) and the covert operations into occupied Europe in 1943. And then to find during the 'Cold War' it was the site for 3 Thor nuclear warheads. Spend some time here and be informed and entertained.

“A "must visit" museum.”
Reviewed 26 October 2013 via mobile

WOW! So much in such a small space. This place is packed with memorabilia relating to clandestine operations towards the end of WW2. This is the base from which secret agents left the UK to work undercover with the French Resistance. We started with a 15 minute film shot during the 1944/45 era, then our guide who was clearly an enthusiast ke.pt us enthralled for over two hours, before letting us free to roam. Utterly absorbing! We will come back again and again. Note, closed from end October to Easter.

“Thought provoking - well worth a visit”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

The Carpetbagger Aviation Museum has just recently celebrated its 20th anniversary since it was formed. Despite living less than 5 miles away and driving past the entrance every day I have gone to work for the past 7 years I had never visited the museum, so took the opportunity to visit during its special celebration open weekend.

The museum is housed in the Group Operations Building on the Administration Site of the former Station 179 airfield at Harrington in Northamptonshire, which was used during Operation Carpetbagger during the second world war. Displays and exhibits within the museum depict the history of the airfield; information about the secret missions from the base to deliver agents and supplies to resistance groups in occupied Europe, and displays include the secret work of the British Special Operations Executive. As a 'forty something' who has thankfully not had to experience war first hand I found the exhibits, supporting information and stories behind those individuals who were based here very thought provoking.

If you happen to get thirsty or a bit peckish during your visit there is a small cafe on site which serves hot and soft drinks and snacks at what I felt were very cheap prices (50p for a tea and 35p for a slice of cake!). The cafe also doubles up as a shop, with a few items available for sale to remind you of your visit.

All-in-all, I am pleased that I finally got round to visiting the museum - well worth a visit if you're in the area.
