“Dissapointed, but this CAN be remedied.”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

Difficult to rate , as clearly, the food is prepared freshly for every diner, and is delicious.....but because of this, it takes time. Alas, this excellence, is potentially the restaurants downfall when it comes to catering a party. I would say that this is a great place for small groups and couples to go to.. but until the staffing levels improve, I wouldn't recommend larger groups ( anything over 4) attend.

“Different dining times and culture”
Reviewed 26 January 2014

I don't know why the main complaint of some the reviews is 'place is empty'. Is the food good? YES! is the service good?? YES! So what's the problem? I personally would rather dine when it's quiet and therefore guaranteed that they will not mess up the order and it will arrive fresh and piping hot. If you want a crazy busy atmosphere, visit during Sundays after 2pm, when the nearby Chinese school has finished then you get big Chinese families dining....or even on Chinese New Year if you dare....good luck getting a table!
That aside, it might be a good idea to ask what they can recommend that is traditional Chinese food....I have asked a Chinese friend to help me as the back of the menu is all in Chinese -- and that is the best stuff!!! There's the stuffed aubergine and tofu, proper Cantonese Roast Duck.....although when we come here it is for the dimsum -- ha kau, turnip cake, siomai and bean curd rolls.....mmmmmm better go now while it's quiet.....

“Why is this restaurant nearly always almost empty?”
Reviewed 23 January 2014

We used to visit this restaurant regularly when it was The Peking Palace and it was very popular.

However, since it's re-opening as The Happy Diner we have visited about 8-10 times on different days of the week and, as other reviewers have commented, it is always nearly empty, we being the only 2 customers there. The most we have ever seen there is 6 couples. The food has always been good and the service very good (there is no one else to serve!),

Last weekend we had a celebration meal for 18 of us and were booked into the separate room they have. Could not fault anything, the meals were piping hot and the food very good throughout. Again service was excellent (there was only a handful of people in the main restaurant).

We can't make up our minds about this place. We like the food and the staff, but is not good being the only customers in this large restaurant. But why isn't any one using the place? Unless it starts to get some customers in, sadly, we will not be visiting again.

“Excellent home cooked food”
Reviewed 16 October 2013

I really can't understand the reviews here (maybe it's put here by competitors who want them to go out of business). Ever since it's revamped from the old self of Peking Palace, the food has improved leaps and bounds. Decor is pleasant and clean. They have their own Chinese menu for the local Chinese community. We had the dimsum for dinner plus roast pork and pipa tofu. It's better than Royal China in Bayswater- The portions were reasonably generous compared to RC who have reduced their dumpling size. The roast duck can give Four Seasons a run for their money! Then there's the beef brisket noodles that made me miss HK so much. Well worth a trip! I'm just chuffed that it's round the corner from where we live and we get our weekly dimsum fix there. All well priced. There's a separate set menu for the Western palate to appease the general perception of what they think Chinese food is about. The usual hoi sin duck and sweet and sour pork etc... But nonetheless, go try it for yourself and be impressed.
