A pleasant place to visit on a sunny day. The climb of 138 steps to the roof of the castle is worth the view if you are fit enough.

Absolutely stunning castle with gorgeous grounds and beautifully illustrated history. The museum has a nice collection of artefacts and you get to learn of the castles life cycle, how it has changed roles throughout history. It's free to roam the grounds, but it's well worth a few quid to enter the castle proper via a drawbridge. You are able to enter the tower and other areas via stairs but those are steep, and some narrow, lets just say you have to be sure footed to enter all premises. The gift shop is adorable with friendly staff, and we left Portchester castle happy with a couple of penny whistles. Great fun for everyone and definitely going back.

We stumbled on this by accident and what a terrific castle to visit. The views are amazing across to Portsmouth and Gosport and the whole harbour area and inland.
The grounds are free to wander round and we were just going to do that but I am so glad we went inside the castle and keep, it is a real jewel. The audio tour was very good and had optional sections to listen to or ignore.
Lots of steps up the keep to keep you fit and tight winding staircases.

Climb to the top of the castle for a fantastic view, although you will need to be fit and the steps are quite narrow and circular. Not for the feint hearted.

Visit the church, which is in the castle grounds, where you can buy a good cuppa and a piece of home made cake. Well worth it.

The grounds of the castle are also great for picnicking, although bbq's are not allowed. If you visit during June you may catch the local carnival and fair. At this time there are also lots of things going on inside the castle walls. For that there is not charge.

Visited today as a preliminary visit prior to bringing a class of 5 and 6 year old later this year. My daughter and I had a lovely hour or so wandering around the castle and venturing up the tower. I won't be taking my 5 yr olds up the tower though! The views from the top were stunning and the grounds were amazing. We didn't do the audio tour but bought a guide book. I am really Looking forward to bringing my class here in June.
