Nothing to dislike save that free on-site parking is limited, so that maybe an issue.

Well preserved site with lots of expalnation about its long history

A ruin but you can get up to the top of the tower with excellent views over the pleasant village of Portchester, the harbour and nearby hills. The village church is inside the outer walls but freely accessible. The castle has an audio guide which is very informative and not too long winded. Public transport access is easy - bus 3 every 20 mins to the old village (train and X4 require a longer walk).

We were a bit group of families with children ranging from 6-12 yrs old. The grounds are great for a picnic and games but they charge an arm and a leg to go up the tower and into a small area of the castle. If they slashed the price more people would go in.

Had been wanting to go here for a while, weather was good so we took a picnic, got there about 11.30am and managed to get a space quite easy, did full up quick after that as expected being a Sunday, when car park does get busy you may struggle to find a spot, it's also free to walk round the grounds although a charade does apply if you want to go up the tower, back to the picnic whic is set inside the grounds(free) and a lovely setting to eat, plenty if room dispute plenty of people around, ice cream van in the car park not expensive although slow, great afternoon if weather good and you want to make a day of it.

I have lived near Portchester Castle for nearly 40 years, and this was my first visit. Shame on me, it's been there since 276 AD, so I don't feel so bad. It is mainly free, apart from the bit owned by English Heritage, it's about £5 (as I'm an English Heritage member it was free). It is well worth that just to get a better idea about the castle.
