We returned with friends to this great hotel.
We were once again made very welcome on arrival.
The rooms are clean & tidy. Nothing was too much for the staff.
The food was very good.
Would highly recommend s stay here.
We are already looking to book in the new year.

Stay 17th November

A special offer through Mighty Deals. Arriving in the early evening we were warmly welcomed at reception, but no offer was made to assist with our luggage. Our room on the first floor was a delight with two Queen size beds and furnished in an old fashioned way but in keeping with the style of the hotel and with quality fittings. This applied to the bathroom also which appeared to have a recent refurb. Even the old style TV fitted. No question here of giving special offer guests an inferior room. Everything was clean and the bed comfortable but it did have a definite lean to the centre.

It was only in the morning after a good nights sleep that we could we appreciate the magnificent setting of this pseudo castle

The public areas of the hotel are well kept with new carpets and replacement stair treads, but oh! The stairs. They were everywhere - even to approach the lift to the first floor meant climbing steps and then five small flights down to the room as this part of the hotel has been built on a hill slope.

Our evening meal was taken off a fixed price three course menu at £22 included in the offer and gave a reasonable choice though several of these came at an additional cost. A modest wine list again at a very reasonable cost. Service was friendly and efficient and gave the impression that nothing was too much trouble. The meal arrived quickly and was well prepared and presented.

Breakfast the following morning had plenty of cold choice plus the hot breakfast to order. This was specially prepared and did take a little time in the busy restaurant but was worth the wait. Again our compliments to the staff.

Wifi is available in the rooms with a download speed around 5Mg. The hotel has a small leisure centre with a small welcoming pool, hot tub and gym.

Would we stay again. Yes please as long as we can still manage the stairs!

Room Tip: Think probably all the rooms are of a high standard but if you have a problem with stairs ask for an easier access room

Many thanks for your full and frank comments, they will help us to develope the hotel further, the stairs around the building are to stop the hotel moving above the Wyndyke Hitch which is a natural tectonic fault.

Our room was clean, fresh and large. Despite the two double beds and a large dressing table with lots of storage space and a chest of drawers and a free-standing TV (which could do with updating) and three bedside cabinets (one at the side of each bed and one between the beds) there was still plenty of space. An ironing board and iron was provided and there was a hospitality tray with tea, coffee and biscuits.

The bathroom was also clean and fresh and although not high-spec, it was more than adequate.
Breakfasts was self-service buffet had the usual juices, cereals, fruits, but a cooked breakfast could also be ordered. Our only gripe with the breakfasts was the eggs (one fried and one poached) had hard yolks - perhaps this is a personal preference but I've seen it mentioned on other reviews of the hotel.
The evening meals we had very good, with a good selection including a few vegetarian choices.

The staff were exceptionally pleasant and friendly and made the time to chat to guests. Nicola McQuillan, the Duty Manager seemed to be in half-a-dozen places at once, but still found the time to chat to us on each occasion we saw her.

This hotel offers exceptionally good value for money

This is a large, rambling hotel, somewhat tired in places. Lovely location with beautiful views over the Derwent Valley, & handy for Beamish. Reception fairly helpful, though once again we couldn't have a loyalty Rewards Scheme upgrade, even though we'd jumped through all the hoops, including calling reception twice in the week before our stay.
Dinner was a real disappointment, food mediocre with frugal portions, even after our three courses with wine, we had to order an extra pudding, & unsatisfied, we ended up foraging for food in the bedroom. Service was faultless.
Our room was large & clean, but very dated - haven't seen a TV like that in a hotel room for years. Breakfast room busy with plenty of choice on the cold buffet, although the cooked breakfast was nothing special, & again, small portions, (why HALF a slice of black pudding? What next - half a hash brown?). Wouldn't stay again.

Room Tip: Most rooms seem to have great views, but some are a LONG way from reception.
