“Kindness, Comfort and good cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2013

Our hosts Helen and Owen were very welcoming.
We had no problem having hot water.
Owen is an excellent cook
Helen is an exceptional hostess
Ironsign Country House is directly situated on the Hadrian's Wall trail,
We arrived a little bit earlier on that rainy day and Helen, kindly,
invited us to our room and took care of our wet boots.

Room Tip: Our room had a splendid pasture view

Large clean spacious room and bathroom and right on the Hadrians wall trail.

After a friendly greeting, from Mrs Little when we arrived at 4pm, we enquired about an evening meal. (We hadn't previously booked a meal as they advertise themselves as a French Cuisine restaurant catering for conferences and supplying room service) Mrs Little told us they weren't cooking as the other guests didn't want to eat that night!. We accepted this gracefully as we hadn't booked but were then handed two business cards, one was a taxi number to get ourselves into town to eat and the other was a business card for Ironsign proclaiming to be a restaurant!! We were somewhat bemused! She then warned us not to have a shower for a while as her husband had not turned the water on yet????!!!! We sat in our sweaty gear for an hour waiting for the water. The room service was nowhere to be seen either. We plummed for a pizza delivery rather than pay a £20 return taxi fare.
The bed was comfortable and we slept well. We had breakfast at 8am served by Mrs Little and returned to our room to finish packing our bags ready for a full days walking. At 8.58am, an hour before checkout time there was a loud banging on the bedroom door. We were faced for the first time by Owen the Proprietor who in a loud aggressive manner demanded we come and pay our bill so he could 'get on' . a somewhat Faulty Towers moment we both thought.....but not quite as funny.
Perhaps a course in Customer Service might be beneficial.

IRONSIGN, Owner at Ironsign Country House, responded to this review, 28 June 2013
I was disappointed to read your review, especially, as in the morning, you chatted with Owen and when asked if every thing was okay you stated that every thing was fine Your conversation with Owen can be heard on the Bar CCTV You also had the opportunity to make comments on our evauation sheet but failed to do so! We would have liked the opportunity to discuss any concerns, and be given the chance to rectify them at the time. I am slightly bemused as to why you thought you had to sit and wait for 1 hour before taking a shower - I only suggested you wait 5-10 mins to ensure that the water was hot enough. We had just converted the system from oil to gas and were still testing it out. It was clearly explained to you when you made the booking that we only cook for our guests, so we need to know in advance if you are eating with us. I explained the options for eating elsewhere ie 2 miles away in Heddon (not Newcastle) which costs £3 in a taxi-this was the option you said you were taking. It is not true to say we advertise ourself as a french restaurant and that is clearly stated in the room information pack and web site and you obviously understood we were a Bed and Breakfast establishment when making your booking. The card you were given was one we had printed when we intended to open a restaurant, we kept them, as they have a useful map on the back which we thought might be of use to you in case you got lost. You could of course have had "room service" where I would have provided sandwiches/soup but you never requested this, and with the best will in the world I am not a mind reader. Owen's knocking on the door was necessary as we are a working farm and he had already waited around for half an hour for you to pay your bill! In order to provide as good a service as possible, can I request that, in future you discuss any issues you may have,at the time and with the relevant people, as this could only be of benefit to all concerned. Perhaps a course in interpersonal skills would be beneficial.

I was shocked by the negative attitudes of other reviews as I found this to be an excellent, comfortable B and B. The only point that I can agree with is that it doesn't seem to have enough hot water for the amount of people having showers, my friend had a lovely long hot shower whilst mine was a very quick tepid one! (We swapped in the morning!) Dinner, although we felt expensive, was of quality restaurant standard and the portions huge. Maybe a two course option would be good as alot of people struggle to eat 3 courses even after a days walk. Wine we felt was pricey - but I suppose they have to make their profit somewhere as this was the cheapest B and B on the whole of the walk. All in all I stay was excellent and I would certainly recommend.

Me and a friend were walking the wall and made our last night stop at Harlow on Hilll very early. We decided to push on and called ahead to Ironsign to see if they had accommodation as we could not be bothered to camp on the last night. Considering the very last minute call (literally 1 hour) they were very accommodating and even split a double bed and made a twin room for us.
On arrival we were very pleased with the warm welcome and the quality of the room at a very reasonable price. It was lovely and large with a big bathroom and very clean with tea making facilities and a TV.
We were very hungry on arrival and the owner even gave us a lift into Heddon to enjoy the local Pub called the Swan, which served very nice food and good beer.
Breakfast in the morning was fantastic with a great selection of cereals, yogurt and toast followed by a lovely fry up!
I would definitely recommend!

Rather than yomp through Newcastle we decided to finish our Hadrian's Wall walk near Heddon on the Wall and looked forward to somewhere warm, welcoming, quiet, comfortable and where we could have a good feed and drink in celebration. We succeeded at Ironsign Farm on all counts.

Our rooms were spotless, spacious, very comfortable and quiet after the road noise which had been with us all the way from Chollerford. Our hosts Helen and Owen were very welcoming without being 'in-your-face' and really couldn't do enough for us. The atmosphere they created was lovely laced as it was with humour and efficiency.

The evening meal was very good indeed - all 3 courses of it with a good wine - as was breakfast. And finally, when we asked for a taxi firm's number to run us to Wylam station, Owen insisted on driving the 4 of us there himself. Unnecessary, unexpected, but very much appreciated. Thank you both for a lovely stay!

Walking Hadrians wall and reached Ironsign at the end of day four. We had a a family room for four and a twin. The place is really a big guesthouse rather than a farm though there are some sheep and cattle. Rooms were large and comfortable and the big bonus is that you can order dinner ahead and it is guaranteed to hit the spot after a long days walking. Decent wine can be got and its a warm and welcoming spot - especially when in a group. Owen does like to be paid in cash though

We felt welcome from the moment we stepped through the door. Our room was lovely, the host and hostess were charming, dinner and breakfast were delicious - fresh strawberries soaked in rum were the dessert the evening that we were there. The evening meal featured vegetables fresh from the garden. Perfect location on Hadrian's Wall Path. (Shaw party 8.13.12)
