“Perfect place to stay for a relaxing break!”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Just returned from a fantastic stay at Dee and Charles' Southlands Farm Cottages. We stayed in Middle cottage which was perfect for us as there were just two of us. Middle cottage has a great feel to it, very nicely decorated with luxurious touches. We were lucky to have great weather and there's lots of nice routes to go for a walk, a jog or a drive. If you're lucky some of the family dogs might pay you a visit and you'll get to meet ratchet (pictured) and widget and the rest of their gang, which is a treat as there very friendly and energetic.

We were made to feel very welcome throughout our stay and we enjoyed being able to wander around the farm and meet the ponies, chickens and goats. The farm also has cows and on the way home we bought some of the farms own beef sausages and steaks which we later had on a bbq and were delicious. Dee was even kind enough to pack them for us so that they wouldn't defrost on the journey home. We were also fortunate to be welcomed with a very nice basket of items including eggs, chutney, soap and tea, which is a very nice touch indeed.

The cottage has absolutely everything you need and if what you would like is to relax in comfort, read a book, watch TV, go for a walk, a cycle, a drive, get some rest, enjoy the countryside, sit by a wood burner, enjoy a glass of wine and eat great food, you can do it all at Southlands Farm Cottages. We would love to come back and rent the whole place with friends and family, I imagine its spectacular in the winter as well as the summer!

Thank you for a great stay- John and Liz, May 2014

Room Tip: p.s there is no swimming pool or fitness centre on site, but I didn't want to reduce the quality...

We had a lovely Easter weekend at Southlands Farm Cottages. We were a group of 4 couples and we stayed across all 3 cottages (East, West and Middle) - all were beautifully furnished and decorated, and very clean. There was enough space for us all to eat and socialise together in either East or West, and both kitchens were well equipped for self-catering. Excellent value for money. Highly recommended!

I knew what the perfect holiday cottage would be like: warm and welcoming, with log fires, comfy sofas, crisp white bed linen ..... found it all at Southlands Farm Cottages. Charles and Dee are the perfect hosts, making people and dogs alike feel that a move to this part of the world is a must (which is what we've now done). Hadrian's Wall - Vindolanda, Chesters, Houesteads and more - are all within a few miles drive, as is Hexham, probably the nicest little town in England, with a breath-taking Abbey and a fortnightly farmers' market. Or you can just put your walking boots up and read by the fire!

Gunnerton is in the middle of nowhere, close to Hadrian's Wall

We were in the 'Middle cottage'’. The cottage is perfect for for those wanting an 'away from it all' break so much so that my mobile phone didn't work, and I was reliant on 'free Wifi' connection from the farm, but had to ask for the router to be re-booted several times. There is a telephone box a few metres down the lane. The cottage was charming with a good fitted kitchen, microwave oven and a wood burning stove fire, but the egg timer was broken.. The bed was comfortable and there was reasonable storage space and spare towels in the cupboards.

The shower is a big round rain type shower very nice and the bath was fine, but I would have liked a flexible shower too. When I looked at the photos on Southlands Farm Cottages website the toilet looked a bit squashed, but there was ample leg room as it turned out, but some people may have been put off booking it after looking at the picture.

The rug in the sitting room could do with replacing as it is very thin and torn, and to watch the TV you need to turn the small sofa round to face it, or look sideways from the sofa. We had a bit of an issue with the smoke alarm as they are all connected, and we had to replace the battery ourselves. There are some interesting coffee table books to read in the cottage. And a drawer of leaflets and instructions on how to use the cooker, microwave etc. The fridge can be used as a freezer too by changing the settings. It’s a single fridge, but adequate for two.

Charles and Dee are helpful people and Dee welcomed us with a basket of bits which included some nice sausages, there were no eggs as the hens weren't laying at the timea, but when they do, you can buy half a dozen eggs for £1.50 when available. It would have been helpful if Dee or Charles had shown us what switches did what, and how the bins worked. There is a 'wet room' on the block, but when we tried to put our washing in, the machine was already full with someone elses' laundry.

The outside lights seemed to be switched on by the East and West Cottages, and only when they were occupied and the lights on could we see our way down the two little steps to the door.

Being a farm the owners keep dogs and they sometimes hang around the gate and we had to once dodge their poo to open the gate. But, to be fair the owners had cleaned up the mess when we returned later in the day.

Because you are in the middle of nowhere, make sure you are well topped up with petrol. We went into Hexham to fill up at the Shell garage there and whilst in town visited the craft and gift fair in the Wentworth Leisure Centre, which had a very good swimming pool in it . We also saw the Kathikali dancers at the Queens Hall, visited Hexham Abbey and had a couple of meals out in town. Hexham is a good place to do a spot of shopping, with Tescos ‘free car park’ and Waitrose ‘£2 (because it is also used by the Leisure Centre and a mainstay carpark)
.
For eating out do try The Barrasford Arms in Barrasford is the nearest pub and the food there is superb - highly recommended, the main chef Tony Binks' mentor was Albert Roux and the walls are full of accolades. The food is fabulous but a tad on We ate here 3 times and it worked out about £30 a head. Do check the restaurant opening hours before going and the dining area is small, so booking is recommended, but you will either have to go into the pub or find a spot with service for your mobile and book up. Or ask Dee to book for you. The pub also has B&B. For afternoon tea try the teashop at Simon Burn, a really lovely shop/tea room, souvenirs and beer shop a rare treat. The Simon Burn is a beautiful little village with nearby walks from the car park. Battlesteads at Wark is OK, and they have free printed walks you can do in the area, we did the river walk – it was beautiful but very muddy. Would I stay at middle cottage again, YES!

Room Tip: Middle cottage is very cosy and good for 2 people.

This is a splendid place. A welcome basket with home-grown and produced sausages, eggs from the farm's chickens, a bag of potatoes, even chilli-hot home-cured salami; a perfectly put-together kitchen; comfortable bedrooms; tasteful decor; eco-toiletries...there is vast attention to gustation and aesthetics in East Cottage and we three were comfortable throughout. More, the location is exquisite, tucked away in a knot of villages not a million miles from Hadrian's Wall, practically within the bounds of the Northumberland National Park and within reasonable driving distance from gems such as Cragside (the first hydroelectrically powered house in the world, and a treasurehouse of Victorian science and art) and the delights of Alnwick and the coast. So far, so remarkable. We were unable, however, to arrange to get more eggs (fresh farm eggs being an altogether different thing from the week-old shop-bought variety), although we left a message. Were we meant to telephone? The owners never seemed to be at home, leaving a slight feeling of imbalance in what was otherwise a good stay.

Stay 1 - 6th April, west cottage, where we stayed is lovely, gunnerton is a little out of the way, though for me this was a plus, and as long as you have transport its not a problem, the owners are very friendly, I would definitely recommend staying here.

Just spent 5 days at Southlands and what can I say. It was just superb, we stayed in the West Cottage and everything was just perfect. Dee and Charles the owners have obviously spent much time and effort making the cottages so welcoming and to such a high spec.
The meat from the Farm Shop was delicious and nothing was too much trouble.
On the advice if Dee we had a meal at the local pub which was also superb and very good value for money.
We will definitely be returning to Southlands and would highly recommend a stay there.
