La Posta Del Cangrejo
Ranked #7 of 11 Hotels in La Barra
Reviewed 28 March 2009

We stayed at La Posta in early March, 2009. Overall we were very pleased with out stay. It is a great location in La Barra . It is right on the beach and close to shops and restaurants. We were very happy we did not stay in Punta del Este (a mini Miami Beach). La Barra has charm and is convenient to Jose Ignasio and futher places north. You need to rent a car to enjoy this area. La Posta was a bit dated but the rooms were comfortable and clean. The staff was nice but not great. The hotel restaurant looked nice but was very expensive and old fashioned. I would guess that a dinner for 2 would easily be $100+.

Not a whole lot of frills here, but you're steps away from shops, restaurants, a beach and surfspot; so what do you need? Pretty friendly staff, didn't really challenge them with anything but they seemed nice enough. Love the location.

The hotel is in La Barra. Only 10ks or so from Punta but in a different world. La Posta is low rise, with interesting architecture and a few yards from the sea.
We'd just hit low season when the room cost $120. In high season it's US$360.
Sea views, friendly staff, good food - when the restaurant was open.
But above all a base to visit Punta del Diablo a couple of hours up the coast. Worth a visit for its beachside huts and amazing laid back, one-man restaurant The old man and the Sea.

Really wanted to like this hotel, b/c it is a great location and has good 'bones' but needs some updating...others have hit the highlights...great location...view of the beach...nice pool...great chocolate croissants for breakfast...front desk staff was very helpful...it is a beach hotel and so had a musty smell which is not uncommon, but it also seemed like there was mold and we both had breathing issues while we stayed here. I think that the restuarant is still meant to be one of the best around...and there were some nice touches...like big chocolate easter eggs for all the guests and a personal happy easter from the owner...interesting people from all over also staying at the hotel...we were there during 'holy week' so all of Punta del Este was pretty bustling.

I stayed at La Posta for 4 days in March 2007. This is a curious hotel. Its major attribute is its location overlooking the beach and ocean, ideal for leisurely walks or watching the surfers. The restaurant is very good and the staff easy going and friendly. Internet access is possible. However, while the hotel may have been a luxurious spot in the past, this is no longer the case. It's trying hard to cling onto its 4 star status. The rooms appear a bit dated and the bathroom and fixtures somewhat basic. We paid US$120 per night for an ocean view room, which was OK, but the price in high season reaches US$300, which seems excessive.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel on March 1-3, 2007. The hotel is located in the beautiful La Barra area of Punta Del Este. I highly recommend staying in La Barra as it seems to be the hub of Punta's restaurant and bar scene. It is also very close to some amazing beaches and a nicely removed from all the cookie cutter high-rises of Punta.

The hotel, itself, was fine...but, nothing made it spectacular. However, my understanding of La Barra is that it doesn't have any truly "spectacular" hotels.

The positive aspects about the hotel are that it has (1) a beautiful pool overlooking a stunning beach (more used by surfers than swimming, though) with poolside food and beverage service should you want that; (2) it has a very good restaurant should you decide to eat there; and (3) it is very centrally located to all the activity in La Barra (you can walk to all the shopping, dining, and clubs).

The only negative aspect about the hotel and that is that the decor doesn't seem to have been updated in a very long time and the rooms are sparsely appointed. But, given the fact that you are in such a nice location, one can easily overlook such a minor flaw.

We would definitely recommend staying at this hotel if you want to stay in La Barra. As a side note, my husband and I drove over to The Mantra (where we had considered staying)) and were so happy we chose La Posta Del Cangrejo!! The Mantra is hike away from the beach with no views or the sounds of waves crashing on the beach.

Also, one more thing to note, if you staying in La Barra for the nightlife, make sure you go in December and January (mid -February at the latest) as a lot of the "cool" clubs and restaurants close for the season after those months.

I stayed at La Posta for five days last February. The location is outstanding, those staying at Mantra were quite jealous indeed. Had an oceanview room which I thought was relatively small for American standards (compared to like a resort in Miami) but in line w/ what you consider a nice size room in Europe. Bathroom can use some updates, again reminded me of Europe a lot. The pool is lovely and has a great view, we used to lounge there for a few hours after breakfast. Breakfast was above expectations, best croissants I ever have outside of France and my friend died for their pain au chocolat (that's why we needed some recovery time at the pool every morning). They have a really nicely decorated spacious living room next to the breakfast bar that makes for a great spot for reading on a rainy day. The staff couldn't be any nicer (except for the front desk lady) they went way out of their way to help you with whatever you may need. I will certainly go back because of the feeling of the place, the amazing views, the nice pool, the croissants and the perfect location.
