“Just want to return, suffering from the worst case of Hoilday Blues!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 January 2013

We have travelled extensively around the world with our family and have always used trip advisor for research…but finally we write a report!

Stayed 25th-28th December. Family of 2 adults and 3 children (16, 14, and 7).

We travelled to Khao Sok by overnight train to Surat Thani and then onwards by bus. Cisco kindly picked us up from the bus stop and took us immediately to our house. As others have mentioned, the rooms are a little small but they are very well built, furnished and decorated. The bathroom was especially nice and the beds were very comfortable, yes I could smell a faint smell of dampest on the pillows but honestly it wasn’t that bad and “I would know being an asthmatic.” The air conditioning worked well and the wifi was excellent, very important when you want to call home on Christmas day!

When we booked Las Orquideas, we hadn’t realised Sisco and Nee had built another hotel called Hotel Khao Sok about 1.5km down the road. Sisco immediately offered the use of facilities at the other hotel explaining it had a very nice pool. To our amazement, Sisco would drive our family and others, to and fro on a daily basis; it was part of the service. The pool was a little deep, but so were most pools in Thailand, so if you have young children, make sure to bring some arm bands, that aside, the pool was set in stunning surroundings and the waterfall was beautiful to listen too, drinks were also brought to you while you were having a swim.

It was very clear; Hotel Khao Sok was built to cater for all quests on both sites and not to the detriment of Las Orquideas. For instance, the restaurant was built with plenty of tables to cater for the 15 rooms shared between both sites. There was a wide variety of food at the hotel; we mainly ate Thai, as it was so delicious. Alex my 7 year old is a fussy eater, so he only ordered from the European menu. I did try some of his burger and it tasted like it had been served up from a fine steak house. Breakfasts were also delicious and Nee kept topping up Alex’s toast! We did eat in Pawn’s (recommended by Cisco), absolutely lovely food but I still preferred eating at our hotel, it was the same quality, better service and we weren’t bitten by any mosquitoes.

We went on two trips; the Lake Tour and the Elephant Trekking. Both were fantastic, but my boys enjoyed the lake trip more as they loved wading through streams and climbing through caves. I have included some pictures of the caves, they are truly magical inside. We booked all trips and transport though Nee, as people were being ripped of by travel companies in Thailand. For instance, we were told by the travel agent inside Bangkok Train Station it would cost 3500 bhat for 5 people to travel by bus from Surat Thani to Khao Sok. We declined, as we had been told by friends it should cost approximately 200bhat per person for an average journey of 2hrs. Luckily we didn’t book, and when we arrived in Surat Thani we bought bus tickets opposite the station for 1000 bhat for all 5 people (from the Thai man with the pony tail – very helpful guy!).

We couldn’t recommend this hotel enough; the host’s are fantastic and work hard to ensure you make the most out of your stay in Khao Sok. For anyone who now doesn’t know which hotel to stay in, Las Orquideas or Hotel Khao Sok? Let me assure you, it will not make any difference as you can go between the two so easily, simply speak to anyone at reception and within 5 minutes you are picked up. Both are slightly dearer than other hotels in Khao Sok, but you get what you pay for. The accommodation has been built to last and will not deteriorate during or after the rainy season, this was important, as myself and youngest son suffer from bad asthma. Although we were tempted to sleep in other tree houses locally, practically we knew we needed to sleep well as some trips start early and can be very tiring.

Only mistake, did not stay for long enough, should have listen to other reviews, this hotel and area is worthy of 3-5 days of your trip to Thailand.

We spent 4 nights here, the owners were warm, inviting, friendly and knowledgeable on the area, excursions and where to eat great food.
It is an amazing experience to say that you slept in among all the sounds and smells or the rain forest - with only a short walk to the entrance of the National Park.
The accomadation was very clean and cozy and exactly what you want after a days activities.
Breakfast were great and set us up for the day ahead.
Had a very enjoyable stay here and would go back and recommend to anyone.
Enjoy :o)

As former guests mention, the service from Sisco and Nee is really excellent, and they're great hosts. But the hotel is in our opinion not more than average. The rooms are small but ok, but needs somewhere to hang wet towels and clothes. This being in the jungle is very important, because otherwise everything is continious wet, damp and moist. The furniture and chairs have seen better days, especially outside. The breakfast is basic but ok.
We went for different tours.
1. The kayak/river tour, which is just a total loss of money. In total maybe 25 minutes of kayaking and else it was feeding some fish and having coffee. Do not spend your money on this.
2. Night safari. We where lucky and saw both scorpion, snake, spiders, civet cat and a small deer like animal. For us it was a great tour. Beware there's leaches and we had "company".
3. One day lake tour. For us it seems that most of the tour is just transport. First 1 hour by bus, then 1 hour by boat, where you can enjoy the scenery but nothing else. We then went for the jungle/cave trek which was ok, but without seeing any animals except bats and spiders in the cave. If you're afraid of confined spaces, swimming in a cave/ going into breast/neck high water and being together with bats and spiders then don't go. For us it was not a problem.
4. Elephant riding. We went because of my 12 year old nephew, and I doesn't really like the idea of riding elephants - I've seen how they are trained, with sharp hooks and beating with sticks - but if it isn't for these tours the elephants will be used for even harder work ind the jungle. Not much to see on the tour - mostly I liked our elephant more end more during our trip, cause it had a bit of own will, and being my age I think that's quite okay to be a bit stubborn :-)

Dear Aarhus,

Greetings from Sunny Khao Sok and thanks for staying with us recently and for taking the time to post your feedback on Trip Advisor.

We are glad to know you enjoyed the Service at the Las Orquideas Resort, Service to me, is the most important factor when it comes to choosing a Hotel.

We have just won the “2013 travellers choice, best service in Thailand award” from Trip advisor.

Please be informed that there is a bar to hang towels in each bathroom and that towels are changed every day by our housekeepers but don’t expect me to install a clothesline for you so that you can hang the Laundry you just did in our villa it is against our policy and we have a laundry service for that.

Our breakfast includes, Orange juice, coffee, eggs, bacon, fresh fruits, banana pancakes and yogurt, this is not a basic breakfast to me and buy the way breakfast is free.

My can even cook vegetarian breakfasts on request.

There is now way you can go down the river within 25 minutes, it’s just impossible, it takes a minimum of 1,30 hours to go down the Sok river on a kayak, and it’s certainly one of the most amazing trips you can go for if you stay in Khao Sok.

Long tail macaques, Mangrove snakes and other animal can often been seen on the banks of the Sok river.

Leaches in the rain forest…… well there is not much I can do against that, if you prefer to avoid them, the best is to visit the park in the dry season.

The Full day lake trip is the most popular tour in Khao Sok, so far all our guests are more than happy with it, of course we cannot give you guarantees about wildlife, unless you go to the Klong Saeng wild life sanctuary.

I don’t understand all this polemic against elephant rides in Thailand.

Elephant in Thailand were used during centuries to do forestry work, they had a short life spend, due to intensive work , those elephants have now been recycled into the tourism industry and can live up to 110 years.

We all prefer to see the in the wild of course but they are so many poachers around that the elephant farms are now seen as a solution to conserve the Thai elephants by the government.

If the Mahout (Elephant master in Thai), always have a hook, it’s to control the elephant in case he gets out of control, those elephant can weigh up to 5tones so you can imagine what could happen in case of accident.

I’m living in Thailand for over ten years now, and never saw a mahout using that hook, but I fully understand the reason why they have to carry one.

Best regards,

Francisco and Nee

The place is beautiful and well maintained by very welcoming and thoughtful hosts. Gorgeous tropical plants are everywhere and create a very relaxing atmosphere. Breakfast is good.

We stayed in a family room which we found lovely despite small place in interior. Indeed there are 2 large balconies and constantly warm climate allows to use them as living room. Stairs to go to upper room are very steep and can be dangerous if you have kids getting up at night.

My family and I stayed here for several nights and really enjoyed the location. Francisco and his wife were gracious hosts who were willing to arrange for us any of the tours that we desired within the rainforest. We did a night hike and hired a boat and guide for the day on the lake. It was fabulous - we even saw a wild Asian elephant along the shore. There are many nice restaurants within walking distance of the resort, so even though it borders the Khao Sok rainforest, there are a multitude of options for eating.

We were slightly disappointed with Las Orquideas - only because of the fantastic reviews we had seen on Trip Advisor.

First of all there were plenty of positives. Sisco and Nee were fantastic hosts - very helpful and friendly and did everything they could to make us welcome. The hotel had lovely grounds which were well kept and a good location. Breakfasts were good.

On the downside, the room was expensive for this location compared to others we saw. It felt damp from the humidity (and this was in the dry season!) and it was small with only enough room for the bed. There was nowhere to hang or keep clothes so we had to live out of our bags. There is no air con, only a fan. All the facilities (bar, breakfast, pool) are at Siscos new hotel about 1-2km away which means that everything focuses around there. Whilst someone was always on hand to provide a shuttle between the two this wasn't idea.

Overall, perfectly pleasant stay and no major gripes but don't understand the overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Dear Olive,

On behalf of the Khao Sok Paradise Resort, I wish to thank you for staying with us recently and for taking the time to post your feedback on Trip Advisor.

I’m myself surprised about your review, knowing that all our villas have air conditioners.
I offer all my guest to use the swimming pool at the Hotel Khao Sok, free of charge since we don’t have a swimming pool at the las orquideas Resort, this is an additional service provided to our guests, don’t take me wrong we certainly don’t try to concentrate on the Hotel Khao Sok.
Khao Sok is the most humid place in Thailand, no surprise, we are located at the top of a mountain in the middle of the rainforest, and yes it’s also humid in the dry season, and it’s the same in all other hotels in Khao Sok.
We don’t believe we are expensive, we have won a best bargain award from Trip Advisor, but we do believe that quality has a price.

We hope we will have the chance to welcome you back at the Las Orquideas Resort.

Best regards,

Sisco and Nee

Greeted by our host, Francisco. He knew our name and anticipated our arrival. He escorted us to our Chalet atop the steep hill and gave excellent advice about the area, and tour activities. Despite having his own delightful restaurant, he suggested Restaurant Pawn as an alternative. Excellent advice, we alternated meals!

Despite our desires to see certain things, Francisco advised us which attractions were less desirable and made suggestions to maximize our vacation experience!

The room was clean and well maintained, (despite not having a latch on the bathroom door). A small detail that barely deserves mention....

The pool at our resort was damaged and un-usable, so Francicso shuttled us to his other resort to enjoy that pool facility! A delightful and gracious touch. He also arranged every tour and activity and ensured they were exactly on time to pick us up!

Located very close to restaurants and the Mini-Mart, a brilliant place to stay....

Room Tip: Clever travel tip. Always keep your resort number handy, drivers may not know your destination but...
