La Table De Gustave

Reviewed 30 July 2013

We stayed here one night on our journey from Italy homeward to England. It proved to be a good choice. The drive to Ornans off the autoroute took us through some beautiful leafy roads alongside rivers. Ornans doesn’t appear to be a touristic town. It was interesting to walk around and view the old characterful buildings. We particularly enjoyed the former monastery and the lavoirs. From previous travels in France we have become accustomed to looking out for the lavoir in any town we visit. Here there were two. Interestingly they were completely different designs and as we have consistently found, both were preserved very well and decorated with lovely floral displays. This was the first time however that we had seen a notice of death and forthcoming funeral of an 80 year old resident. The neat little notice was posted in both lavoirs and added a poignant memory. Inside the hotel is well designed, modern and clean. The shower was good although the bathroom was very small. We ate in the hotel restaurant. The manager helpfully talked us through the menu and explained the local specialities. The food was delicious and the wine was good, the service was excellent. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this for a stop over. There is no separate entry for the restaurant so considering the meal has moved my rating up from a 3 to a 4* It was the night before Bastille day and we were treated to a magnificent firework display high up on the escarpment. Bravo Ornans!

Stayed two nights. As other reviewers have noted this hotel has been fairly recently renovated, with the result that it looks clean and fresh throughout. It is not a luxury establishment but reasonable value. We were offered a choice of rooms, 204 and 211; the latter was slightly bigger and located in the attic, so possibly less noisy, so we took it. It only had skylight windows though but if you stood up you did get a view of the limestone escarpment and a partial view of the river through the buildings opposite. It was rather hot while we were there and there didn't appear to be any airconditioning; we were reluctant to leave the windows open though because of possible street noise, although to be fair it didn't seem too bad. Bed (kingsize) comfortable and shower very good, though screen not long enough so water dripped onto the floor.

First night we ate at the pizzeria on the main road through town - called something like the Sainte Anne - food was fine, nothing outstanding, but the lady who served us (possibly the owner?) was very friendly and charming. The advantage of it is it seems to be possibly the only restaurant in town where you can actually sit right by the river without being separated from it by a road.

Breakfast buffet at the hotel was pretty good, a decent choice, and the evening meal was also very nice. However, the service was slow - at breakfast quite a few of the staff seemed to be chatting in the kitchen leaving uncleared tables, and during the evening it took them ages to even bring us menus.

Unfortunately I was a little disappointed in Ornans itself - I agonised for ages over where to stay for this part of our trip and wouldn't stay here a second time. I think my view was coloured by a brief visit 20 years ago when I just passed through and thought how lovely it was, but my memory possibly deceived me; while it is undoubtedly pretty, most of the river frontage is occupied by houses and there are few places where you can actually get close to the river apart from the bridges; also the roads are fairly busy with traffic.

We did a nice walk up around the woods surrounding the village, past the chateau and along the top of the limestone cliffs - took 2-3 hours and was very pleasant. Leaflet with route available from the Tourist Information Office.

i think this is the most ungly because we don`t get there what we want. I was not hungry but i like to eat mouse au chocolate and snails but they don`t have anyone. so i order the plat of the day but it was also not possible to eat. so i only like to drinke something. the waitress was so rude because they dropped us off at a different table because we were supposedly sitting in the restaurant part. this is simply impossible and it dosen`t work.

i`m realy so disappointed in this restaurant

We were going to stay in Hotel de France (which is more central, but the town is so small it doesn't make such a bit difference) but stayed here because the Hotel de France is closed in winter whereas La Table de Gustave is open all year.

Our room was small with only basic furniture (a place to hang clothes, table, chair, bed but no bed-side table, shower, no hair dryer) but that's expected of a two-star hotel. The room was clean so no complaints there. Very quiet (only one other room occupied), so was able to sleep well. They provided a cot for our 15 month old daughter, for 10 Euros extra.

The restaurant downstairs is good quality, not fantastic but we were able to have good, local food. The staff was friendly. Parking right across the street (at the post office). The bar downstairs attracts an interesting group of locals, but everyone was friendly. Ornans is a nice little town that's popular in the summer, but very quiet in winter.

Overall basic hotel & restaurant, good value.
