Cabanas Uh Najil Ek Balam
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Temozon
Reviewed 23 October 2011

If you want to see the real Yucatan... but stay in comfort... Cabanas Uh Najil Ek Balam is perfect. No. These are charming ecotourism cabanas operated by the Mayan villagers in the lovely village of Temozon, just a few miles from the Ek Balam ruins. My daughter and I rode bicycles overnight from Valladolid and stayed here. The cabanas are clean, charming and the hospitality couldn't be better. We had a great time and bought a REAL hammock - not one of those mass-produced ones you find in the tourist markets- finely woven by a 16-year-old girl who works at the coop. The ruins are quiet and interesting, and nearby Cenote X'canche is worth an entire day as well. One or two nights is perfect here. I would definitely return. Great value and very comfortable.

The ruins at Ek Balam near this eco hotel have yet to be over run by foreign tourist but when this place gets completed ( steam room, and outdoor theater were under construction and the pool was useable but not finished) along with the continuing discoveries and restoration work at the ruins it will be on everyone’s list of a must visit place. So if you enjoy being off the beaten path and don’t mind roughing it a little this is the place to go. But go soon, these people are working very hard to put together a first class place. It will be completed and discovered and then it will be just like every other major set of ruins in the area., overpriced as well as overcrowded.
The cabins are clean and comfortable (no A/C but a ceiling fan in a thatched roofed cabin is adequate) , and well situated to the ruins. The staff, while new and inexperienced, are very polite, helpful and willing to go out of the way to make your stay comfortable. The Yucatec hospitality is wonderful in most places but here it is exceptional. The prices are very reasonable, $150 pesos per cabin. They have the standard selection of beds and will provide hammocks as well. While each cabin has its own bathroom some of them are a few steps out the back door while a few have the bathroom inside the cabin.. The costs of the meals was only $30 pesos each and while there wasn’t much of selection, the food was excellent and nothing beats handmade tortillas. Be prepared to eat local cuisine, longanisa (local sausage) and eggs is a must as are the pancakes with local honey in the morning. The grounds are well kept and sitting out under the stars in the evening is nice since there is little light pollution to obstruct your view.
We were there in April to visit the ruins, which are magnificent for their surviving stucco works and the cenotes ( part of the underground river system ). The ruins used to be accessible from the hotel grounds, but that had been closed to protect the ruins from theft so unless you are traveling by car a cab will have to be called from the town nearby. (2 Km) The most difficult part of the journey is from Valladolid to the town of Ek Balam unless you can pass for a local be prepared to pay about $150 pesos for the half hour taxi ride out to the hotel. There are the local mini buses that make the trip for less, but with 3 children under 10 we opted for the cab ride.
