“Excellent Stay”

This is an outstanding villa and we would definitely return. We would have given it 5 stars however there are a couple of things (see below) that in our opinion the owners could do to improve what was nevertheless already a great experience.

The good points have been covered in the other review on this site but are worth re-stating. The pool is superb - it feels like you're about to go over a waterfall when you swim to the infinity edge - and the views are to die for! It's also very clever in how it cleans itself each afternoon - we can honestly say that we have never seen a villa rental with a pool so free of debris, etc. The views from all over the villa are outstanding - we loved coffee on the terrace in the morning outside our bedroom - and a gin and tonic on the roof terrace each evening to watch the sunset. If a restaurant had such views then it could charge a fortune - but here the view's included in the price.

The villa itself is smart, modern, clean, well equipped and has all of the home comforts you would expect. The air conditioning works well - although there is a breeze most of the time and we only used it whilst sleeping. There is a charcoal fired BBQ outside.

As we said above we would definitely return but there are a couple of things that in our opinion could be improved upon. Firstly, the villa is crying out for some type of privacy screen (either permanent or pull down) between the outside dining terrace and the adjacent villa. The villa is advertised as private but without such a screen lots of the outside space is on view from Villa Eleni next door. In fact, it is quite difficult when you're eating not to catch the eye of one of those eating/sunbathing in the other villa - they are only a road width away. They can also see quite a bit of your sunbathing area and pool. This is unfortunate because some form of screen would easily and cheaply rectify the problem without affecting the views. I note the other reviewer on this site refers to this problem also. It is particularly impactive on the users of the neighbouring, Villa Eleni since most of their usable outside space is visible from Villa Sarah until mid afternoon when the sun moves round - at least in Villa Sarah you can get away from them - although to do so you will be using parts of the villa that are perhaps less appealing than those areas that are on show to Villa Eleni. We appreciate that some enjoy a bit of company but in our experience most villa users want privacy - otherwise they would most likely go to a hotel. We still had a great time because the people next door were quiet and were out a lot of the time - but if they hadnt been I'm not so sure.

Secondly, you should receive some instructions regarding the driveway before you arrive. Once in the villa it recommends reversing into the drive - and the people next door used to open the gate, back well up and get a run-up. However without that knowledge we nearly burnt out our car's clutch when we arrived - it's that steep if you start forwards from a stationery position in a normal car!

Lastly, the main bin is the size of the one we have in our bathroom at home. I appreciate the need to keep taking the rubbish to the skips in a hot country - but there were only two of us and we filled it each day. If there were six people I think you would be going out several times a day - or have rubbish bags lying around the house - there is no outside storage area - they are all locked up.

It is a fantastic villa and you won't regret booking it even if nothing changes - but it would be so much better with a little more privacy for the outside space in our opinion.

“Stunnings views, suits a quiet holiday but might be tricky for elderly or disabled.”
Reviewed 16 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

I think the standard description given here is pretty accurate - you are very high up with stunning 270 deg views over the Souda bay and mountains on the sides and beyond the bay - the views were a holiday on their own plus you get the raw feel of the Cretan way of life (goats, smell of wild thyme) around you plus sometimes dramatic "alpine" style clouds across the mountains however, you also get to see the slow creep of new villas impacting the mostly unspoilt landscape and sometimes, the late night party noise of other mainly English villa owners do drift over but often the villas are just sat empty and the local area is very quiet even in the height of summer. The villa is excellently run by Villas Crete holidays and locally staffed by expat Brits - the house and the pool cleaner each visited twice a week to clean up and change the bedding and the welcome pack was great as we arrived at 5am after an exhausting drive from Heraklion and milk, tea, coffee, wine, some snacks were waiting for us. Villa is pretty smart and well presented throughout although there is plenty of, ahem, rather rough “builders' finish" in places. Well equipped for 4-6 people in 3 quite spacious bedrooms with plenty of clothes storage and each bedroom and the lounge area has its own aircon unit (need this at night). The lounge is rather small for 6 and the sofa is only for three adults. Each bedroom has doors to the outside with shutters and mosquito nets and the master room has a walkin wardrobe, ensuite and fabulous views. Although mosquitoes do not seem to exist on Crete but there are huge numbers of wasps which spoil al fresco dining attracted to hot food (apparently a general Cretan problem) but we were able to decoy them by putting a plate of warm old leftovers nearby. There is a hotel style safe indoors and a combination key safe on the outside and a full sized kitchen with halogen hob, microwave and electric oven and has plenty of cooking bowls, whisks etc for making decent meals although BBQ tools are a bit lacking. There is included 1mb broadband (not enough to stream TV and glitchy at times but good enough to surf and email) and a good 3G mob signal, satellite TV (no time to test!) plus a DVD player with a selection of DVDs and books. This shares a plot with sister "Villa Eleni" next door and I think this villa is definitely the better of the two, as it has a "sundeck" (total privacy as nothing can overlook other than goats on the hill behind) and a larger pool terrace area and all the front gardens are prepared with automatically watered flowers but you are as perhaps not as isolated as you may hope as from the alfresco dining area, you can see eachother but there is privacy around the side and most of the pool. Only big negative is the drive up from Plaka (nearest town with lots of nice quiet, local restaurants and a couple of shops/mini supermarkets). The road is complicated, twisty, steep and in the last parts, there is no road - just a rocky path. Difficult to find so trust the "Nav Mii" free Greek Satnav app and use the GPS coordinates supplied by Villas Crete) as I found the directions hard to follow at the end. While someone above says you need a 4x4 - you can still get away with high revving an ordinary small diesel rental car (most Cretans do this) but a disabled or elderly person will struggle with the final super steep path to the front door plus you cannot really walk, cycle or run anywhere as you are trapped by other peoples’ land - you need to drive to do these things so yes it may be a little trapped. However, the infinity pool that lights up at night provides hours of endless amusement - it is about 130cm at its deepest and 8m long so its fine for lengths and for swimming kids but not really for paddling. if you are very noisy you will probably upset Villa Eleni next door – not quite isolated enough. If you are looking to be close to a large town with lots of nightlife – forget it! This is ideal as a quite, isolated family place and you can spend days on end by the pool and looking at the views. Also with a car, you can explore many attractions that west Crete has to offer.

“Lovely place, know about the driveway!”

We stayed in the mirror image villa next-door villa Eleni in June. The villas are gorgeous, well kept, stocked and amazing views. We were also well looked after throughout the booking. However I wanted to let people know that the road up to these villas is very dangerous and not what we are used to in UK. Not only that the last 50m up the driveway is a 45 degree angle and requires a 4 wheel drive if there are more than 2 people in the car. There is a gate that needs opening so you can't get a run up to it. We went with parents and a baby, and it caused lots of problems for us, only my husband was brave enough to drive it so we felt quite trapped. My parents have arthritis too so the few days we did have to get out at the bottom of the driveway gave them both aches and pains. Fine and beautiful if are you active, fit and want to be away from it all, but definitely not a convenient villa even with a car. The local square of Plaka is lovely and great choice for dinner and Almyrida is great for families, small but very well appointed with tavernas. The beach is narrow but shallow clean and perfect for babies. I'm sure we'll return in a more accessible villa again!
