“Paradise”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

Words can't express how incredible this place is, but I'll try.. From start to end, we were pampered at the Hacienda Puerta del Cielo, a.k.a. PARADISE!

Leonel (an Hacienda staff member) greeted us at the airport with a personalized sign and a warm smile. During our drive to the Hacienda, we learned a bit about the government, agriculture, and daily life in Nicaragua. Leonel is a wealth of knowledge and has great spirit.

When we stepped out of the van, our jaws dropped. Yes, the pictures are amazing. But seeing those views in person is even better. The Hacienda is beyond beautiful. The casitas, pool, lounge, bar, hammocks, and dining area are all lovely and comfortable.

The food is fantastic! Rather than walking through a buffet line and looking at food prepared for hundreds of people like most all-inclusive resorts, the Hacienda serves each meal to their guests. The tables are nicely set and the courses are brought out fresh. It's obvious they take pride in their meals, because every single one was delicious and beautifully prepared! We were invited into the kitchen one afternoon and helped make enchiladas for lunch :)

The drinks are delish and always available. From the stocked fridge in your casita, to the attentive bartenders, you will never go thirsty. Try a Laguna Sucia - a tropical juice with spiced rum! JC, is it officially on the menu?

I had the most amazing full-body massage at the Hacienda. Everything was set up on the deck of my casita. I thoroughly enjoyed the sounds of nature mixed with the light music while Katherine worked out all my kinks and left me feeling extremely relaxed.

The excursions were a lot of fun. The Masaya Volcano tour was very interesting. We learned about the land and history of the cities surrounding Masatepe. After visiting the volcano, we had a great time shopping in the city center.

When I heard the Hacienda sponsors a local preschool, as a teacher, I was eager to find out if we could visit the school. They were more than happy to let us visit and play with the kiddies for a bit. The children were adorable and so appreciative of their new classroom materials.

The Mombacho Cloud Forest and Zip Lining was insanely fun! Before lift off, they offer delicious, complimentary coffee and tell you about the plantation. Then you're given a glide demonstration by the guide (this was helpful, as I was a first timer). The guides are very experienced and keep you safe as you swing from tree to tree. The cloud forest is incredibly beautiful- I could've played Tarzan all day.

The Hacienda Puerta del Cielo blew us away on every level. The owners, JC and Linda, went above and beyond to help us prepare for the trip and accommodate our wants and needs during our stay. Adrian, Erick, Oscar, Richard, Katherine, Karla, Helen, Sayonara, thank you! We are truly grateful to have met such wonderful people and hope to return to this paradise.

I truly cannot say enough about the resort, staff, and location. I went with my friend, and from the moment we got there we had a fantastic time--thanks to resort. First, it's in a gorgeous location and the casitas are perfect! The tours are so well done and Lionel does a great job. The food is delicious with a diffident meal every night (thank you Carla!) Not to mention, the entire staff is so warm and welcoming. They even took us dancing one night! The great vibe comes from the owners, JC and Linda, who are gracious and attentive hosts. I would highly recommend this resort if you want a great experience.
Thank you so much JC, we had such a wonderful time!

Some say this is a Eco hotel but I believe they are wrong, a Hacienda is by definition a home and Hacienda Puerta Del Cielo feels much more like a home that a hotel. The other guests become friends in hours, the staff treat you so well that you feel like family.

Going out to tours with Leonel who acted as our guide is like traveling with friend who happens to be a fully trained tour guide and so much more. The chef is wonderful, the food varied and like in a true home she invited us into the kitchen to show us how to make one of several dishes that we loved. The owner JC Espinosa was there during our stay, he is a very interesting person, he is a very well know large yacht and home designer and he put all of his extensive experience into creating a warm and comfortable home for his guests to relax in. JC took full advantage of the stunning views of the volcano and the lake which you are enchanted by from all the decks and the pool.

I mentioned the chef but her food deserves a bit more, every meal was perfectly plated, varied and flavorful. The staff does a great job on service, they are very attentive, helpful and pleasant.
The tours we took were outstanding for the costs, they arranged for us to have an excellent English speaking guide for the cloud forest and zip lining tour. It was just two of us and yes we could have saved some money by going with a large group but what we learned and experienced by having the guide to our own was priceless. The zip lining was great fun!

The Hacienda is just enough out of the way that you feel very remote but it is only a mile down a dirt road and 10 minutes up a paved one to the very nice little town, we spend a number of hours just walking and exploring the town and everyone was wonderful. Get the large memory chip for your camera, between the stunning views form the decks of the Hacienda, the lovely town and the great tours you will fill it up!
On Saturday night JC took us and the other guests to another town near by to hear some local music and dance, part of the staff came with us. This is a place that you would never find on your own, it was filled with all ages of people and a great 4 piece band playing songs from the revolution and local dance music.
We all had a one of a kind experience, we where not foreigners visiting but guests of a good friend of the owner of the bar and we had a wonderful time.

Our room was large, clean and at night we just left all the windows open and enjoyed the breeze, during the day we spent time in the pool, reading in the shade looking at the local birds mesmerized by the view. We enjoyed a few of their wonderful home made pina coladas, outstanding!

There is something spiritual about Nicaragua in general and Hacienda Puarta Del Cielo in particular.

I could go on, better just to say, great place, great people, a place apart from all others, GO!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Honeymoon suite, well worth the little bit extra, you have your own deck right at t...

Very nice resort and great staff. Great place to unwind and relax. The tours were all very good and i highly recommend doing all of them. Lionel is a great guy that was very informative about everything in Nicaragua. Oscar and Eric and all the staff are very friendly and made us feel very comfortable. The drinks are cold and not overpriced. Loved the Tona beer! If you want a place to just chill out and relax, this is it! If you go be sure to stop at a dollar store and pick up some school supplies for the kids at the school in Masatepe. It's a heart warming experience and the kids are adorable.

Rarely do we return to a location no matter how wonderful but Hacienda Puerta Del Cielo is the exception. Staying here for our second consecutive year feels like coming home. We are already looking forward to next January. This is truly a special place: the location, the views, the architecture, the pool but mostly the staff/owners and other guests. We have never met a more genuine welcoming group in all of our travels. While there may be more inexpensive places to stay, I find it difficult to believe the experience would come remotely close to what is offered here. You wont regret booking this piece of heaven.

We stayed in the Hacienda in December and were blown away by the mismatch in prices (HIGH) and actual experience (charming, but in no way deserving of the price tag). For example, the Hacienda is ISOLATED. As in, your choice is to either walk 25 minutes down a dirt road with questionable drainage and wildlife and then catch a motor taxi, or to pay a lot of money for one of the hotel's drivers. For example, for a single day trip for two people -- leave at 10am, back by 2:30 pm -- they charge $200.

Nice place. Kind staff. Lovely views. But absolutely lunatic pricing.

Also, "eco" seems to be a short-hand term to denote that some things don't work properly (light switches, outlets, etc...), rather than that the place is environmentally conscious.

Dear Mary,

I am very sorry that you found the price of your 2-night stay at the Hacienda and your Masaya Volcano Tour to be excessive. I know that you visited more economical locations after leaving us, and I genuinely hope that you were satisfied with those accommodations and with the remainder of your stay in Nicaragua.

Our goal at the Hacienda is to provide each of our guests with gracious, genuine personalized service; 3 delicious, complimentary Nicaraguan inspired meals daily; and the most relaxed, blissful and comfortable resort experience in Nicaragua. We do not advertise ourselves to be the most inexpensive place to stay, but neither are we the most expensive resort in Nicaragua. The prices for our accommodations, guided tours, airport transfers and spa services are clearly listed on our website.

Most of our guests prefer to sign-up for our bilingual guided tours for the care-free convenience they offer, as well as, the air-conditioned comfort of our new vans. However, our tours are by no means obligatory. Inexpensive public transportation is available from town. Our Concierge and I have provided directions and recommendations to adventurous guests on numerous occasions. Of course, this can be a very time-consuming option, but it is an option.

Hopefully, your discontent with our rates will not deter you from returning to Nicaragua. I hope that the pristine natural splendor of our beautiful country and the warm, welcoming spirit of our people will bring you back to experience the many other spectacular sites Nicaragua has to offer.

Best Regards,

You can't go wrong booking a stay at Hacienda Puerta Del Cielo. From the moment you arrive you will feel welcomed by the friendly staff and that feeling will continue throughout your stay. I had a great time on my recent solo trip there and it's because a) it is a beautiful place, in a beautiful setting b) they take care of everything and make life easy, including setting up great day trips for you and c) everyone that works there is super friendly and helpful. The atmosphere of the place is relaxed and it's easy to hang out at the bar in the evening with the other guests and staff and enjoy the local beer or whatever your heart desires. Lionel is an excellent tour guide and makes the excursions fun and easy. I definitely recommend doing them all as they add a lot to the trip. If you are looking for a place to slow down, hang out with fun, interesting people, and see the nearby sights this is the perfect place. Get a casita and take advantage of the outdoor shower and private porch complete with hammock and a table to rest a cold drink. Ahhhhhh, I miss it already.

Room Tip: Go for a casita. You won't regret it.
