“Super Experience - Wonderful Guide”

This ancient castle has a fascinating history and our guide, Marie, was very knowledgeable and she made the tour of the chateau very interesting and enjoyable. We really enjoyed our visit and would recommend this to anyone visiting the area.

“Apothecary tour only - make sure you understand the language!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2013

The two tours for chateau de Bauge and Apothecary can be done separately or together. On this occasion we visited the apothecary on its own. The apothecary is a short walk from the chateau but unfortunately, owing to stairs does not lend itself to wheelchair users. The tour is always guided for the first part but you are left after about 45 minutes to show yourself around the hospital ward, chapel etc.
I understand that English ( and other language) spoken tours are available but we went on a French spoken one, with a leaflet that supposedly translated. I understand & speak French quite well but my reduced star rating on this occasion is because the interesting information and anecdotes etc. that the guide was telling were NOT replicated in the leaflet which was basic, uninformative and dry! I know the chateau guides speak very good English ( and other languages ) so why not get the detailed explanations translated ? Also, not a single one of the posters telling you about the exhibits on the self guided tour is in any other language other than French! The management are missing a trick here - get detailed translations done and your foreign visitors would have a much better experience.
Also, photos are not permitted in the apothecary itself - so ones own memories have to suffice, hence the importance of the quality of information imparted. On the whole though, the apothecary has the potential to be an interesting ( but small) place to visit.

“Guided tours”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2013

We booked tours to this and to the nearby Apothicairerie the hospital from the Seventeenth century, as this was the only way to see them as there were no unrestricted visits, presumably because of the value of the exhibits in the latter. The guides could speak excellent English.
