“Wouldn't go there again”
Reviewed 29 December 2010

Good points: Rooms are clean and well appointed. Facing the beach is nice.
Bad points: I always prefer a remote location, but the beach is here is not nearly as nice as other parts of the island. Ended up driving to Seven Mile Beach every day, which is a waste of two hours. The beach at the hotel is narrow, windy, full of seaweed.
While the quality of the bar food was better than I'd anticipated, service was spotty. Continental breakfast was really inadequate.
Check in was slow, unwelcoming.
The lobby is totally geared toward people buying there. This place just doesn't feel special.

We rented a car so we could visit the entire island. Even though we had to drive 45 minutes to get to Seven Mile Beach and the aiport from our hotel, we liked staying in the quiet part of the island.

Our room sat right on the beach facing the ocean (as all the rooms do), brand new looking and spotlessly clean. The hotel was fine except for the last two nights of our stay, the next door guests held long, loud parties late into the night that disturbed our sleep.

My wife and I recently had our wedding at The Reef. We had 25 quests and everyone was all-inclusive. Going into this trip I had my reservations as to whether my idea of all-inclusive was their idea of all-inclusive. Their idea blew mine away. We ate like kings and drank so much the bar had to restock. On top of that the watersports were all included. The guys at Whitesands were fun and very helpful pointing out what to do and not to do.
Our wedding was fantastic. It was in the sand, set up beautifully and the waiting staff did an excellent job. Linda, our coordinator was a blast to work with. She thought of every last detail. She set up the perfect minister for us, knew all the secrets to making the most of the time we had and just kept coming up with extras I never expected. Rebecca, our photographer, was top notch. She knew all the best shots and got the photos to us in two days. Incredible. I cannot put in words how happy we are with The Reef.
I have put together many trips in days from drunken cruises to smashed ski excursions. There is always a catch or some low point. This trip was epic. Everyone had fun and was well taken care of. From the staff to the worldly bartenders, this place rocks. Thank you Collin, Nick, Tony, Sammy, Sandy and Mikey. (the reason i put a low score for sleep was because I was up drinking with these people all night, lol) The people always make the trip and these people rock. I was afraid that at checkout that might all change, not a single problem. AMAZING.
This was our first trip to Grand Cayman, we are coming back every year and this is where we are coming.

Our family (children ages 16, 13, 11) visited Grand Cayman for the first time and spent a quick 5 days at The Reef. Loved the location & surroundings. Stayed in spacious 2 room suite on 2nd floor facing the ocean. Slept with balcony doors open & listened to the waves. Woke up to the rising sun and (usually) empty beach. It was very quiet & beautiful. We rented a car and drove ALL around the island (Kaibo Grill, bio-luminessence kayaking, stingray city, snorkeling on the North Side; Makabuku's, Dolphin Cove on the West End; Yoshi's Sushi and Caymana Bay in Georgetown). After seeing the island, we were happy we were staying on the quieter East End vs. the busy 7 Mile Beach Area, but it really just depends on what kind of vacation you enjoy. Kitchen is fully equipped. Ate breakfast at the resort, lunch/snacks in our room and dinner someplace new every night. Towels were changed daily, beds made daily, trash removed daily. I did the dishes myself but didn't mind (I'd rather know that they are really clean!). Some of the staff are more reserved (front desk), others very laid back & friendly ("Apollo" at Whitesand Sports). No one was rude. Overall the staff is not as polished as in some of the big city Marriotts and Ritz Carltons, but since we were staying on the more relaxed East End, we figured it came with the surroundings. We had a great time snorkeling right off the beach. Weather was cool by island standards but great for us Midwesterners! We are already planning our next visit and will definitely stay on the East End at the Reef Resort!

I'll preface this as it was our first trip to Grand Cayman and thought we were getting a good price on the package from an online service. I'll also say that I live on a resort island about an hour from the nearest city, so I'm used to driving and lack of selection for restaurants, shops, etc. I also prefer to visit places out of the way and far from the tourist traps. If you are seeking a quiet, remote, non-touristy type vacation where you do absolutely nothing but lay on the beach or by the pool, yes, this place is perfect. In fact, the weekends fill up with locals from the other side of the island seeking peace and quiet. I'd add it's probably not the place for the typical under 40 crowd. I'll summarize the highs and lows.

The Tortuga dive shop (part of Red Sail Sports), which is located a short walk to the next resort, was fine. Instructor Andy and Captain Mark were fabulous. We only did one 1-tank inside the reef shallow afternoon dive ($75 CI + $40 CI equipment rental) since conditions were rough and I was recovering from surgery. Snorkeling at the resort was disappointing and pack water shoes to get over the rocks in the water if you plan on taking a dip.

This being said, you REALLY need to rent a car if you plan on staying more than 2 nights or are feeling flush with your money to pay for the taxi into neighboring areas, beaches or towns. I'd also suggest upgrading to the full kitchen since the studio is lacking in dishware, utensils and cooking options with only a small microwave and mini refrigerator. A small grocery story is directly across the street as well as a liquor store, but if you rely on the food from the restaurant, you will tire quickly of limited options. We did enjoy the Caribbean Jerk Chicken Pizza (price ranges about $22 CI) at the bar restaurant and took advantage of the 2-for-1 drink offerings during Happy Hour during the week ($4 CI for a Caybrew; $7-8.50CI for mixed drinks).

There are pools on the property but if you're in the buildings furthest away from any of them, it's quite a walk. The spa was in the furthest building and I did not even check it out contrary to my normal tendency. The concergies were basically only helpful if you were interested in doing their tours and purchasing through them. You were able to get the most basic information but were not given complete information. Such as the days George Town would have no ships. They were good at telling you that, but failed to say some shops also closed down when ships were not in port. This would warrant another trip into town if you found them closed, as we did.

Internet was provided free at the business center but with 3 computers, they tended to fill up at times. You may purchase it for $35 US for the week but note the spotty coverage and slow speed. Buy the one day for $8.99 and you can always upgrade if it works well.

There seems to be an overall lack of information from staff and in the room. Yes, we probably should have investigated more than The Reef Resort website ahead of time but have winged it before on vacations with even less information. We were given a sheet upon check-in that listed the events of the day but it would have been more useful and probably safer for all to properly post the rip current information and instructions not to swim/snorkel by the channel. We finally found this information on a sign by the beach equipment area two buildings down from ours and after my boyfriend was pounded by the surf. He's a strong swimmer and even with fins took 45 minutes to get back to the beach. That was our first day. Yes, the surf was rough and the winds had kicked up probably more than usual since a cold front was going through and this is the rough area of the island, water-wise, but the lack of swimmers in the water should have been a clue that this is not a swimming beach by any means.

Housekeeping was somewhat a disappointment. Sheets were only changed once a week and it happened to coincide with our arrival and departure days. We requested new sheets to change the bed ourselves since housekeeping failed to properly sweep the tiled floors and both hair and sand was being tracked into the bed. There also was only one small rug on one side of the king bed. We eventually moved it to the area by the sliding glass doors in an attempt to reduce the sand being inadvertantly tracked in. Seems corners are being cut and the resort was not busy at all. The bed was made up and new towels dropped off when housekeeping visited but we had to request a broom so that we could sweep up afterwards.

Requested a listing of the television stations but after two attempts the front desk staff advised they do not provide any longer. Requested a bowl larger than a cereal bowl, a cutting knife and working bottle opener and sheets which arrived promptly. Asked if we were required to do our own dishes and never received a proper answer. There were no instructions in the room nor were any provided upon check-in.

Is it a hotel, motel or self-serve condo in which you're staying ? Still not sure.

Room was nice and clean, mattress not comfortable. The beach just ok, nothing to be crazy about .I did not like the restaurant or the breakfast place. It was bad, really. I had the worst eggs benedict ever (15 US$) Tried twice to eat there -bad . And service !!! You have to make your own coffee, even if there is no costumers and they are not busy at all !They expect tip of course, they bring your plate to your table though. There is no dining options there ,unless you have a car. A shopping center !?! thats a joke ! You can buy a water, beer..etc
its like Mexico, but a part of it where tourist don't go.
Advise?, don't go to the east side , there is nothing there ,go west. Beaches are so much nicer ! Water is calm, less wind, no rocks etc. So much better view ! A tons of restaurants , from really nice and worldclass to simple, fresh for much better price and choice Yes it will cost more money for a hotel, but you do not need rent a car , you save on breakfast and save time to travel to get a nice dinner. Go West, nice shops and nice place around.
And seriously I don't know how they get so many good reviews. Its beyond belief ! It might be written by somebody from hotel itself !

We recently visited the Reef Resort on 11/27 - 12/4/10. Upon our arrival, the room was very clean. We were informed that housekeeping would not return until Wednesday to clean the room. Cleaning the room entailed giving us clean towels and taking out the trash. Nothing more. The room would not be completely cleaned until Saturday. We had to buy cleaning products to clean the bathroom, change our own sheets and take out our the trash. Amenities were truly lacking. We had 19 inch tvs (not flat screens). The mattresses on the murphy beds were so hard we would have been better off sleeping on the floor. We had to carry our own bags to our room. We were charged a $285 fee for utilities in addition to our room rate with no amenities. We do not blame the staff but do not appreciate the owners of the property and/or their policies. The spa and gym were on the other side of the resort. Anyone with difficulties walking would truly have a hard time getting to the facilities. We do not understand how this is considered a 5-Star resort. I own other timeshares and know what a 5-star resort resembles. This is not it.
