On an island with 100s of restaurants competing for the best service and the best food - Le Planteur was very disappointing. The French owner seems to try and make the cliche a truth - he is not particularly friendly. Compared to Big Fish, l'Astrolabe, l'Oasis and all the restaurants in Grand Case service was the worst. The food was ok. A hit and miss. Some dishes were good (scallops, foie gras) but not amazing. Some dishes were awful (do not try the French crepes dessert - they were cold and obviously reheated not freshly baked). For a restaurant of this stature it could be so much better. The view is great but it is not enough to compensate for the disappointing service. We are used to better... and it is very easy to find better on this island - for a better price.

Unfortunately much of our disappointment could be due to the fact that the waiter, who I think was the owner, seemed to be a one man show although I do think there was a cook. This gentleman greeted us, seated us, waited on us, made the drinks, and did the same for everyone there. There were about four other tables of four and we had a party of eight, so needless to say he had more action going than he could effectively handle.
We just spent a week in the area and had the absolute pleasure of dining in some wonderful restaurants and have been so thrilled by the quality of food in St Maarten...until this visit. General consensus is that the food was ok but not on par with any other restaurant we ate at this week. Two of us particularly like snapper, that great flakey, mild fish that is almost always a delight. Past experience is that it's at least a half inch thick, tender, served without bones and melts in your mouth. This "snapper" was very thin, fishy tasting, had lots of little bones and sure didn't look or taste like any of the snapper we previously had here. I'm just figuring that if it doesn't look like snapper, and doesn't taste like snapper, there's a possibility that it isn't snapper.
The desserts were also sub par. They just tasted sort of commercial, not the great phenomenal French pastry we've tasted before this. The little lump of ice cream on the pastry was about 80% melted, likely because the waiter just couldn't get it to us. Then we waited a fair time for the check which wasn't broken down for each couple and he just didn't have the time to do it for us. His handwriting wasn't readable so we started from scratch and figured it out as there were substantial differences in what each couples had.
I feel guilty about not telling the waiter and, i think, owner, but we just couldn't get his time to listen if we had tried.
If you're looking for a dining experience on the level of so many other restaurants here, I'd say you should drive by this one.....don't stop just drive by.

With the red roof-top lighted name and perched near the top of the hill on the road to Captain Oliver's, the pleasant breezes through this open-air restaurant always adds to the dining experience. The drinks are always good and the food will never disappoint - the perfect setting for fine dining in French cuisine with a touch of creole. To compliment your mid-day dining experience, you can enjoy a plunge in the adjoining pool!

We went to Le Planteur because it had an amazing view. We saw the prices were a little higher, but assumed that was because the food was good. After reading reviews people seemed to like the place. The food was mediocre at best and completely over priced. We had salads and entrees and our meal took two hours. For 5 people it ended up costing $260 for food that should've cost maybe $12-$15 plate.

Outstanding. This is a gem the place has been here forever, and the owner still greets you with enthusiasm. The hill top view is worth the hike up the road. The food is honest rural French cooking, with fresh local ingredients. Of the four French restaurants we tried on this trip -- this was the best priced, so for the market, this is fair. The Steak with peppercorn sauce was as good as I have eaten anywhere. We came back 3 times to eat here. Oddly each time the side bread was slightly burnt, and because they are out of the way they can run out of an item or two but there is always a good substitute. Recommended.
