“Spring Break 2014”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

This past March my friends and I decided to spend our spring break in St. Martin. We chose Oyster Bay because of the great reviews we had heard from family and friends. The resort was exceptional. The staff go above and beyond for their guests and always have a huge smile to offer. The rooms our in perfect conditions and provide a lot of amenities. I really recommend this resort to anyone trying to find a peaceful and beautiful place in paradise. You won't regret staying at Oyster Bay.

Room Tip: Definitely try to get a room with ocean view and a kitchen!

I agree with Cassiclark12! Room was spacious and views were beautiful. Front desk have attitude. "DAILY Surcharges" for utilities of $5 that was not mentioned ANYWHERE appeared on my bill. This is my first time to encounter a hotel/timeshare like this.

Our condo was on the third floor, marina side. We had a nice view until a rusty digging device was pulled into the marina close to our condo. Our condo was ok . .. several things did not work but the maintenance man was prompt. Concierge and front desk were friendly at first and then they became not very helpful and gave us the wrong information on several occasions. We felt like Oyster Bay Beach Resort did not have a standard of excellence that we are used to having. We are from the west coast and have experienced Hawaii numerous times and this resort and St. Maarten are sub par to the Hawaiian islands. There is a lot of poverty on this island and we feel people nickel and dime you. Also, we did not feel that safe on St. Maarten and we would definitely not drive a car here.

We loved Orient Beach and the water has hues of color that are unmatched anywhere else that we have been. We also took a ferry to St. Barth . . .very expensive, safer in regard to car theft, and driving over there was difficult due to the narrow roads and fast drivers. We learned that 50% of the rental cars come back with new scratches! Also there are restaurants surrounding the resort that we liked: Busbys and Canoa . . .very nice and good food and service.

We will experience St. Maarten for a day on a cruise ship but not for a week. And we would not go back to the Oyster Bay Beach Resort.

Located on the lagoon, the resort has rooms facing the ocean and the lagoon; those with a view of the lagoon are better as there is constant activity of the various marinas situated there. Those do get the afternoon sun and their balconies are warm in the afternoon, but a delight in the evening. The rooms are not brand new, but clean and well maintained. Beds very comfortable; AC adequate and the mini-kitchen complete with small refrigerator helps with the food bill. Front desk service is pleasant, helpful and efficient. The pool is an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, a wonderful spot to spend the afternoon. The restaurants on site are good and the service friendly and competent though there is no hurry; everyone has a smile and is helpful. Prices are par for the island which has to import everything. There is a laundry on site; washer and dryer are $2 each. The lagoon is not a place to swim, however, so you must go to the other beaches on the ocean side. Several other restaurants are close by. There is a Italian restaurant/pizza place just steps away (very good thin crust pizza) with Conca, a more upscale seafood restaurant that is also good. A small grocery and wine store is next to the resort and is surprising well stocked despite its size. It has fresh croissants and baguettes each morning also. Would stay there again.

Room Tip: A view toward the lagoon is best, great sunset and boat activity in the marinas.

Our room was spacious, and the view was great, but the customer service wae less than desirable, and the hidden fees are frustrating. Some of the housekeepers were good, and some weren't. We had a different one for a couple days. The front desk staff were not very friendly, and those working the concierge desk were not very helpful. We rented a car one day and all they did was circle areas on the map for us to visit, no restaurant or shopping recommendations or anything, just areas. They were also unhelpful when it came to helping us with directions, as the map had very very few street names on it. The most frustrating part is the $7 PER DAY "surcharge" for utilities on our bill when we went to check out. This was not anywhere on their website, or our timeshare website, or our welcome letter, or anywhere at all. Correct me if I'm wrong, but "sur" means in addition to/on top of/after, so I don't see how a "surcharge" for utilities is necessary every day. Why is this not included? I have never been to a resort/hotel anywhere in the world where utilities were not included. Extremely frustrating, and the front desk staff didn't seem to fully understand why this was charged anyways, or they didn't seem very confident in their response to us. We will not be returning.

I am an Oyster Bay Beach Resort owner for approximately 10 years. I actually own 5 different timeshares. This is the only one that I absolutely do not trade in to go anywhere else. I love my time here. Quality resort with friendly helpful staff. Clean and safe place to go whether in a group or individually. Things are always upgraded and improvements being done to keep things fresh. They value their owners. I never get bored on the Island because there are always new things opening and to do. The activities desk is really great in helping you get around and providing information. There are a variety of planned activities/events right at the resort to entertain you. There is variety of Great restaurants on premises so you don't have to go far or leave to find something to eat. Staff is very helpful and looks out for the guests even at planned group excursions. If you like to be in water, there is a choice of going to the pool or going down to the beach. Everything you need is right here for a great vacation!

The Ocean Bay Beach Resort i(OBBR) is about a 1/2 hour drive from the airport and Phillipsburg. It is on the Dutch side of the island but a short 5 minute drive to the French side. It is a very well-maintained and clean facility/units, etc. We rented a car from Alamo (the car had squeaky brakes that would often lock on us while driving. it looked like it was in a few accidents. Will never rent from Alamo again!! If I went back, I would not rent a car. Gas is expensive ($5. a gallon) and the roads are hilly and very dark at night). OBBR offers a hop on/hop off to various destinations each day for $15 round trip per person. First time visitors can easily do without a car and be fine with the taxi's or walk to the few restaurants at the bottom of the hill.

OBBR is lovely. We traded our 1 bedroom Marriott Aruba Ocean Club for a 1 bedroom unit at OBBR through Interval International. We were very hesitant at first not knowing what to expect since we love Aruba. However, We enjoyed the "homey" feel of this smaller resort where everyone was friendly and like family.

There were always chairs available at the pool, and when you were at the edge of the pool, it felt like you were in the ocean. Our ocean front unit had a fabulous view of St. Barts but we thought the water was rough. We prefer the beach in Aruba where you can walk up and down the beach and float in the ocean with your tube. Beware that there are no elevators here, but the views are spectacular.. There are also rooms on the Harbor side/Marina view if you want to watch the boats. The pool is lovely and there is also a large jacuzzi. Pool Towels are in your room so when you want them exchanged, you have to leave them on the floor in your unit. We were given a fabulous ocean front room on the third floor. There are also rooms on the Harbor side/Marina view if you want to watch the boats.
The beach area is small and chairs are first come, first served. We did have difficulty getting chars at the beach. The resort is adjacent to the Westin but you cannot walk the beach from Oyster Bay over to the Westin without going in the water and climbing over some rocks.
One of the nice features that OBBR offers is free daily housekeeping which we do not have at the Marriott in Aruba. Linda was fabulous in keeping our unit clean, emptying the trash everyday, replacing our towels and replenishing our shampoo and soaps etc. She even loaded and unloaded the dishwasher. Housekeeping and the Activities Desk were all very friendly, helpful and courteous.

We dined at on-sight restaurants: Daniels by The Sea, Infinity Restaurant, Mr. Bubsy's, Canoa (which is overpriced and average food) , didn't dine at either of the on-site restaurant/cafe options. There are a few easy-walk-to places in the neighborhood, and the one we tried. Prices compared to Aruba are steep and tend to be more expensive on the French side.

We did not go food shopping except for the small onsite grocery store to buy some eggs and cold cuts and rolls. The baked goods on premises at the grocery store at the bottom of the hill is fresh daily . We brought snacks and oatmeal from home.

We took the 2 hour sales presentation and were not impressed. They wanted us to give up our 2 bedroom Marriott week to them in exchange for a studio every other year with $11,000. We are still laughing about it.

Compared to Aruba where we can walk to a mall, lots of shopping and great restaurants within a 5 minute walk, shopping in St. Martin is very disappointing, and 1/2 hour away in Phillipsburg.
We really enjoyed the cozy feel of this resort and found it very relaxing. We also enjoyed the water aerobics every morning for an hour. as well as the Happy Hour every day 4 = 6 with most drinks/cocktails 2/$8. But If your previous experiences have been with larger resorts, you may find it a bit limiting here because there are few options for dining or evening entertainment. If you would not be content spending all your time here, then plan on taxi's or rent a car.

The airport is small, and on a Saturday, we found it a breeze to get through security check points. However, you do not clear customs until the US, unlike Aruba where you clear customs there before returning to the US. Bring a sandwich. We bought a $12 sandwich at the airport in St. Martin.

There is a small laundry room onsite for $2 to wash and $2 to dry. Bring your own detergent and some quarters.
The exercise room is small but functional.
There is a $50. weekly tax in addition to a $7 per day utility charge. Wi-fi is free only the bar area or in the lobby area. It is addition $50 to have it in your room.
Although we frequently stay at Marriott timeshares, we would highly recommend OBBR and definitely return.

Room Tip: Call ahead and ask for an Ocean FRONT room on a high floor.
