“The best place to stay”
Reviewed 18 March 2012

Nice atmosphere, clean, nice swimmingpool, very friendly people, safe and nearby beautifull beaches. No tv and internet which is great and helps you to relax. (internet in café nearby). Car rental necessary to explore the island. The best spot to stay.

I stayed at Westpunt Bungalows last October with my son and we did some diving and I forgot to review Norman’s place.

First a few words about the host Norman. Best way to describe him “good people”. He came to meet us at the airport with the guys from the car rental to make sure we found our way. He took the time to stop at a Quikie Market so we could get the essentials and brought us to the bungalows. He gave us information to find our way around and pointed out some great places to eat.

The bungalows are wonderful. Clean and set in a really nice garden. Being a media junky I keep the T.V and computer on all the time. At Norman’s place it was the first time I have been “unplugged” in years and it was great.

They are very clean and the maids to a great job keeping the place tidy. The grounds are a wonderful garden setting filled with little parrots and hummingbirds as well as tropical plants.

I am going back in December and would not dream of staying anywhere else.

See you soon Norman

I stayed with my wife and daughter in mid-february and it was really a great experience.

A young lady met us at the airport and drove us to the bungalows and presented us a small "welcome" gift.

We must confirm that it is necessary to rent a car to get around the area, and it is better to reserve one with time before your arrival (in our case almost all available cars were gone, so only a SUV was left for us, but after all we didn't regret about it).

The weather during our stay was perfect, almost no wind, just a bit cloudy sometimes, but the clouds save you from the heat that otherwise would be suffocating you.

The swimming pool is small, but nice and clean, and we didn't see anyone swimming in it beside us (or maybe other guests waited for us to leave?)

The bungalows themselves are simple, with a small kitchen, also clean, although some ants, wasps and small lizards come in sometimes, but its easy to get used to them. (we didn't spot any rodents nor cockroaches etc.). No mosquitoes either (that are mentioned in other reviews), maybe they come in other seasons? Yes, and they are situated quite close to each other, so you can hear and see your neighbours, just be aware that you can be heard or seen too.

There is another big red private house nearby (down the road), and during weekend at night we could hear music and people talking, it didn't bother us too much, but could have been a bit annoying for somebody too sensible to noise.

If you plan to cook at home (what we did sometimes), it is important to buy all the necessary food and drinks, you can do it in the nearby supermarket, it is about 15-20 mins drive on the main road in direction of Willemstad (not very close, so make sure you buy all you need, incl. condiments, sugar, coffee, drinking water etc... - no food is available in the bungalows)

You can also dine at Rancho El Sobrino (when you walk down the unpaved road from W.B., turn LEFT and walk about 200 meters). It is nice, you can have a huge breakfast in an open terrace. Or at "Jaanchie's" restaurant, that's a bit farther (follow the main road to the right, after the hill). The food quality in it is ok, not bad when you're hungry, although the service could be faster. (Make sure they serve you what you actually ordered, and not something else, what happened to us). Jaanchie's also has an ATM next door (it dispenses USD and Nafl, but we suggest Nafl because it is easier to get around in this area with local currency).

Make sure to visit the nearby Christoffel Park, and Sheta Boca natural parks (both 10 minutes drive from W.B.), they are lovely and nature-lovers will surely appreciate them.

Also, we really liked the Kenepa Chiki and Abou beaches, not crowdy, when you go there be sure to take a little cash with you, as a truck appears from time to time on the beach, selling ice-cream.

In fact, there is little to do beside relaxing at the bungalow's terrace, in the swimming pool, at the nearby beach or local restaurant, but that's what we went there for (if you want more entertaintment, you must go to Willemstad or southern part of the island), so if someone asks for our advice where to stay in northern Curacao, we will definitely recommend W.B.

Room Tip: Bungalow n1 is the best (IMHO)

West Hill Bungalows is located in Westpunt, which is the quieter side of the island. But there is still plenty to do in the area! After being greeted at the airport and shown the way to the bungalows in our rental car (definitely needed to get around), we were pretty much left on our own for the rest of our stay. The grounds are beautiful and each bungalow has a view of the ocean and the surrounding hills. We loved waking up in the morning and sitting on the porch where we could watch the lizards, birds, butterflies, and dragonflies go by. Do be careful as there are wasps (during the day) and mosquitoes (around dusk) that like to get into your bungalow. There was some construction across the street which was loud at times in the morning, so if you are a light sleeper I would recommend bringing earplugs. There is no wifi available, but you can go to Rancho El Sobrino, a 5 minute walk away, and use theirs while sitting in the restaurant or by the pool. There is also cell reception if you have the right phone, but no landline telephone in the bungalows. This is truly a place to get away from it all. We would be happy to stay here again!

West Hill Bungalows is a great place to stay for independent travelers. Pretty, clean, quiet with lovely practical architecture (by Norman the owner) for tropical weather. We never used the AC, but used the fan every night to blow any stray bugs away. Mosquitos showed up only at dusk, we found, but the breeze blew them away. We brought a good guidebook and went to a different beach every day, all close by, all with great snorkling. Sol Food had very friendly owners who gave us a very helpful list of local tips as well. We bought fresh wahoo steaks from fishermen at Grandi Playa at noon on Sunday and grilled them. We were very close to the parks on the wild and rocky coast which were beautiful for hiking. We tried Jaanchie's restaurant and loved the iguana stew! Wish we had a little easier access to wifi for researching more info on the island. We wanted to hear tumba music, but we never found it. Next time.

Norman had arranged to have someone pick us up at the airport since we arrived on a later flight and to have some items in our refrigerator. That was super helpful and appreciated.

Westpunt is a quiet, peaceful area that we loved. The Ocean Encounters West was an amazing dive shop and there were some great restaurants in the area. We enjoyed the more quiet, nature part of the island.

The bungalows were simple but exactly what we wanted and had expected. We stayed in bungalow #1 which had the most privacy, however the porch overlooked an abandoned building. Not the best view. The bungalow was surrounded by bushes and it had rained quite a bit so the mosquitoes were horrible. We were almost unable to enjoy the balcony.

We never saw or heard from Norman or anyone during our stay. We had a bill on the last day in our door with instructions to pay bill at the hotel down the street during office hours. We went there twice to pay during the hours and both times they were closed. Granted it was on Jan 1st, a holiday, but we went out of way twice. There was what seemed to be a lack of planning. We felt that a way to contact someone should have been provided.

We had asked Norman before arriving where to eat for an anniversary dinner. He said it would be better to take care of when we got there. Which was fine if we had a way to contact places. We felt very ignored. Luckily we had done research as to where grocery stores were and such. A sheet of general information should be provided especially if noone is there to welcome you.

I would definitely consider the island and Westpunt again, but would look elsewhere to stay.

We are very sorry to hear that the attention of the West Hill staff did not met your expectations.

At check in time Naomi (our host) handed over to you an activity guide together with her phone number in case you had any questions. We are always reachable for our guest and we try our outmost to make everyone feel welcome and at home.

We trust our guest and that is why we left the invoice for you to pay whenever it’s convenient for you. We informed first if the restaurant was open in the holidays so that you will not be standing for a closed door, fact is that they were open on all days.

Norman (me) went to visit you 3 times, leaving you with a bottle of wine as a thank you. I really do not understand why you are stating that you never heard of or met Norman (me).

You left without paying, it took time but we receive it after 3 weeks, thank you so much for this.
We feel really bad about this since we work hard to make everyone experience in West Hill unforgettable.

West Hill Bungalows is the most beautiful and romantic bungalowpark in the area of westpunt, surrounding by vacation houses of locals and mountains, pure nature!!

We stayed in West Hill Bungalows in July 2011. We were very happy with our choice! The bungalows are wonderfully designed and built and the landscaping on the property is beautiful. The bungalows are very simple but still lovely. I give this place 5 stars for many reasons including value but it is by no means a luxury resort. I want readers to have reasonable expectations of this place. It is somewhat rustic in that there isn't staff constantly attending to your every whim. Also, be prepared to be isolated, as there isn't any wifi or telephone on the property. In order to get wifi, you have to walk or drive to the restaurant just down the road. We ordered a drink or two and used their wifi whenever we needed it.

The beach is a very close walk. About 5 minutes. In my opinion, after driving to many of the beaches in the area, I really preferred that one the best as it was quiet and less frequented by tourists. The beaches in this area are all in coves. They are gorgeous!

Norman and his wife were extremely hospitable and helpful! They picked us up and dropped us off at the airport. We had a late arrival, and so they prepared a simple food basket for us. The transfers and food basket did cost extra but were nominal and worth it. On our way back to the airport, Norman treated us to some pastechi, which we thought was very nice of him! You must try pastechi, while in Curacao - it is wonderful!

If you are staying in Westpunt, it is a must to rent a car; otherwise, you will be stuck where you're at.

All in all, we enjoyed our trip to Curacao. A family tragedy dampened our trip but we would go back to Curacao and West Hill Bungalows in a heartbeat.
