My husband and I stopped her for lunch on our tour of the island and it was good for lunch and great for a view. The resort is far out of town but has a true island feel. The beach is breathtaking and the resort looked to be a nice place to stay for those looking to be in the water!

My husband and I stayed from 31 July to 9 August. Upon arrival we received a welcome drink and received a free upgrade to a one bedroom ocean view suite on the second floor. When entering the room there is narrow spiral stairway to the second floor. The view was amazing as you could see the ocean through the tropical trees. The room was comfortable, but shows signs of age. The kitchen is of minimal use due to its small size and lack of supplies. The only wi-fi availability is in the hotel lobby. All of the ice machines on the ocean view side were out of order. On our third day, the card key reader for our door stopped working. After going to the front desk each time we needed to enter the room for another three days (while they tried to repair our door), we asked to be moved and they accommodated us. The second room had no functional air conditioner, so we refused to stay there. The third room was adequate, but the “hot” water was only a bit warmer than the cold. All rooms we visited needed some maintenance, like drawers that don’t open, broken door knobs, doors that don’t close easily, missing light bulbs, stained furniture cushions, sinks that don’t drain, etc., which all give the place a run-down feel. There was no DVD or CD player in the first two rooms and the third room had a DVD player that would not power on. There was no information in the room about local or hotel amenities or area information. The staff was friendly, but service lacks as employees do not check on you. We ordered rum & cokes (no drink menu available) at the bar (to take to the beach) but by the time our bill came (the bill always took a very long time) we had finished our drinks, really inexcusable. It seemed like most of the staff was new and unfamiliar with their jobs. The hotel prices are much higher than other places in the area. The birds are amazing and the foliage is nice, the snorkeling is average, and the beach is often overcrowded by non-guests that take all the umbrellas. Overall I would not recommend staying more than one-to-three days tops, but honestly you could visit the beach/hotel for the day and stay elsewhere with better amenities, service and prices.

What a wonderful dive shopa nd staff. What marvelous lodge staff. Great boat and shore diving. But security was a concern. Four in our group had their rooms burglarized. Going into town poverty was evident.

I nearly titled my review "well meaning shambles", because that's how it seemed to us. "5 star prices and 3 star service" was also a phrase that we heard from other guests several times during our stay, and couldn't disagree with.

First the good: the hotel is in a great location and has a nice beach (although not as private as you might think). The dive operation right next door is excellently run, and there is good snorkelling (and diving) from the beach. The location is quiet and the hotel has a nice pool area and a good gym. It also has security (patrolling guards), which seem to be necessary on Curacao. The restaurant and bar areas are pleasant and well maintained (but see later).

The rest, unfortunately, is a story of frustration and missed opportunity (the first for the guests, the second for the hotel)! We stayed for 15 nights, on a meal plan (breakfast and dinner, not drinks) and my husband was diving for about half the time. We had some major gripes and lots and lots of minor ones, none of which would have been a problem on their own, but really did add up to a less than satisfactory experience. I'm aware that many of the problems will seem petty when listed, but poor service and high prices is a poor combination, and the daily "what next" feel gradually drove us mad.

In terms of the meal plan, although the evening food was fairly high quality, the choice was extremely limited. I don't think it would have been varied enough if we had only stayed a week, but for a fortnight it was ridiculous. Within 3 days we were discussing our menu choices on our way to the restaurant, because we already remembered all the options. On our first night we asked for the wine list (drinks are extra) and after some thought were told the options, "red, rose, or, er white". Further inquiry on subsequent nights revealed that there were two reds and two whites, although the sauvignon blanc ran out after our first week (lots of other things randomly ran out during our stay too, including basics like butter). We had a similar experience at the bar itself - there was no drinks menu (we like a cocktail on holiday) but the barman, and other serving staff, were totally unable to say what was available or recommend anything. This did not match our experience on a number of other Caribbean islands, and seemed rather surreal in a place famed pretty much entirely for it's blue liqueur (featured in only one cocktail, and only then when you knew to ask for it). For reference, glasses of wine were US$8 and cocktails US$9 and upwards. Coke etc $3.50. Again, it sounds petty, but the cocktails were pretty weak too, which contrasts with every other Caribbean cocktail we had ever had (it's unusual to wonder, when you first try a rum punch, "does this have alcohol in it" - usually we're thinking "if we have another one, will we be able to stand up").

After about 4-5 days we asked whether the dinner menu was going to change (thinking about the 10 nights ahead) and a few days after that we were offered our own menu, with a couple of extra choices. We appreciated the attempt, but it was really just a re-hash of the usual menu with only one or two new things, and a lot of re-wording to make things sound different.

Service levels in the restaurant and snack bar were very variable indeed, although all the people were friendly enough, and certainly doing their best. Our feeling was that they had received inadequate training. Service was very slow on almost all occasions, and almost non-existent if they were busy or distracted. We were hardly ever offered anything extra (another drink, or dessert, for instance) and didn't even discover that coffee was an option until about 10 days into our holiday. OK, we could have asked, but you reach a point with poor service where you just think it's better not to add any complications. Even signing the bill took ages to sort out. On the first evening they tried to charge extra for dessert, on the grounds that "only food" was covered by the meal plan, but in the end we all agreed that dessert probably was food.

The snack bar was much the same - high prices, very limited choice and very patchy service. On some days the waitress would come over with a menu and return to take an order, on some she might bring a menu, but then you had to queue at the counter to get attention, on others there was no table service at all. Again, if you're running a "come and get it" kind of a place, that's fine, but not if you're charging US$17 for a mediocre burger, or US$14 for caesar salad. Those are fairly high-end prices and in other locations we have had very good service to accompany them, with complimentary bread, water and so forth. After a night's very heavy rain they just left the soaking wet cushions on the chairs and made no attempt to dry anything out. Fine at a cheap beach bar (although how hard is it to take off the wet cushions and wipe over the seat?) but not if you are charging pretty high prices. Or, for that matter, if you want people to sit down.

There was a lot of other small stuff - the room sometimes not being cleaned until very late in the day (5.15pm on one occasion, and only then when we chased), no shampoo or shower gel for a couple of days in a row, despite repeat requests, the laundry that was supposed to take 2 days and took 6, the room keys that frequently stopped working, the shop that was permanently shut... I could go on.

Overall, I think you could have a nice time at this hotel if you have a car and are prepared to drive to other restaurants (nothing really within walking distance), or cook for yourself (nearest supermarket 30 minutes away). In the end we hired a car for 3 days, just to get out and buy some snacks and drinks, even though we'd already paid for the meals. The shame of it is that they could deal with all these problems relatively easily with a bit of training, given that it's a nice resort in a great location and with excellent diving on the doorstep. They just aren't doing it.

Room Tip: First floor suites were are nice.

This is a very nice hotel in a beautiful location. The garden rooms are spread apart, giving a sense of privacy. The superior rooms have a large terrace, surrounded by trees and birds. The room itself is not very big, but ample enough. There is a small kitchen with fridge, cooktop, microwave. Pots and pans are available upon request. The furnishings are old but well maintained. The ocean view rooms are much nicer and very spacious, with a living room area in addition to the bedroom, plus a nice terrace overlooking the ocean. You can't really see much of the beach below, because there are many trees in front. Again, the decor is old, but everything is well-maintained and clean. In all, a very pleasant place. The public areas, including the pool, are quite nice too, although there aren't many places to sit around the pool and the beach, and people tend to grab all the spots early in the day. Now, the bad: The WiFi barely works in the public areas, and not at all in the rooms. We stayed at first in one of the garden rooms, and when I complained about the lack of WiFi, they moved us to an ocean view room, with the promise that it would work. It never did. We had to walk around the reception area in order to get a signal. The restaurant/bar leaves much to be desired, with few options, unattractive prices and inattentive staff. Room cleaning wasn't the best either. Although they did a good job, they would only come late in the afternoon, as we were coming back from the beach, so we always had to sit around and wait until they finished. Despite the problems,it was a very pleasant stay. The front desk staff did an excellent job, and the hotel is overall a comfortable and attractive place, particularly if you want peace and quiet. Another thing to note is the distance from the city and the airport (about 30km). The area near the hotel has few restaurants - which aren't always open - so be sure to rent a car to move around easily and stop by at one of the markets - which are also far away to get some food and drinks.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem good. The garden view rooms are quiet and private. The ocean view rooms are even...

This is a good place to relax, and used to be top-notch. But these days, the prices are still quite high and the management is cutting corners everywhere on costs. Worst thing for us was that the WIFI in the rooms was down - apparantly it broke months ago and they didnt want to pay to fix it. Burnt out lamps dont get replaced. In the restaurant every other lightbulb is unscrewed - making it so dark you cannot read the bill. If you ask anthing from the front desk they are nice and polite but you have to repeat the call 3-4 times to get what you want (in our case among other things a repairman for the broken DVD player in the room).

The pool was nice, but not anything more special than a dozen other hotels have. We did like the little palmfrond huts around the pool. The beach, alothough small and with quite a few rocks, was still nice. The view from up above on the cliffs overlooking the sea is very nice.

Room Tip: Last room in the row of oceanviews is nice - more privacy. Groundfloor seems better than first floor...

This was our second visit to Kura Hulanda Lodge and I have to say that on arrival, we were saddened at how neglected the hotel had been. We learned that the new hotel management company had just signed a 10 year contract and were now determined not only fix the damage but to also to take the hotel to a higher standard of luxury. We still found that food in the restaurants was somewhat lackluster, but without a permanent resident chef, that is no surprise.
The staff were wonderful - many of them were re-hired by the new management company. So nice to see Nahira, Ivory and Ruth from our last visit.
The staff and the location made it easy to forget the temporary flaws and my wife, daughter and I all had a wonderfully relaxing location enjoying the quiet seclusion of the resort itself.
It is clear that efforts are well under way to restore this resort to its former glory. Manual, the new general manager, gave us his personal attention when it was needed (not the often!!) and explained his redevelopment plans to us. I warned him that we may well return next year, in which case, I would give him a personal performance review!!
We just booked to return for 10 days starting June, 2015, so Manuel - you are now on notice my friend.
Looking forward to seeing you all again next year!!!!
