The cheapest way to get around Venice is by the Water Taxis, we paid 30 euros each for 72 hrs pass, to use all the water taxis and buses and to travel as many times as you like. The water taxis take you all over Venice. If you are lucky to stand outside on the water taxis then you will get great views. Sometimes, they can get very busy and they do pack you in like sardines - one useful tip for women when on the water taxi make sure your handbag is in front of you with your hand on the bag, a local woman gave me this tip as they do get pick pockets.

If you are fortunate to have booked a lodging that is right on the water of the Grand Canal or one of the other rii (canals) in the city, it is very convenient to take a water taxi from the airport right to your hotel or apartment. The service costs 100 - 150 Euros, depending on the number of passengers, which is not really that much more expensive than a taxi from the airport in many another city. And what other city's taxis can compare with a speedboat across the Lagoon into Venice? It takes only about 30 to 45 minutes. The water taxis are clean and comfortable. At the airport, it is a walk of over a kilometer from the exit at immigration/customs to the dock, but that kind of long walk is also found at many other airports. The Alilaguna private bus service is also good, but that can be a much longer ride, since the private bus makes many more stops around the city. From Madonna dell'Orto, the last stop in the city, to the airport, should be only 30 minutes.

I agree with the other reviews that you get nice views but you arent able to enjoy them as i spent the whole 10 minutes of the journey trying to get over the 60 euros i just spent!! I suggest swimming the grande canal or buying a dingy.

Had a fab time, splashed out on private taxi from airport to hotel doorstep, taking in all the views along the way was brilliant. Had booked taxi on Internet so came off plane and straight to desk , paid for taxi, walked 5mins to pier and taxi was waiting, real treat and comfortable exciting luxury, the only way to go.

We researched this before our trip to Venice so we knew what we had to do. The Alilaguna Orancio, I think that is Orange Line in italian...you can pay in the Airport or at the kiosk before boarding the boat, that is what we did, we bought 2 return tickets which were 27 euros each. The kiosk staff speak English so no need to swot up the italian version. We were staying for 4 days so it made sense to get returns. They are valid for 30 days. This is a great service, you get on with your luggage the guys on the boat will store it for you and you just enjoy the ride, our Hotel was a few minutes from San Stae. The driver will call out the stops, so as long as you know where you are going its quite straight forward. The timetables are on the quay side, there where no hitches on our return to Marco Polo Airport, the easiest thing to do. A great way to arrive in Venice...
