When told at the VeniceLink booth in the airport Arrivals Hall that only the water taxi would get us to our hotel [the vaporetta (water bus) and shared transfer would drop us at a regular vaporetta station (Guglie) at a distance of about 300 m from our hotel in the city], we decided to book the water taxi because of our heavy luggage. Only after carrying the luggage for about 10 min. to the water taxi docking station and into the boat, the taxi skipper explained that the high water would prevent traversing some of the lower bridges and getting us to the hotel. Instead, he proposed to either drop us at the Guglie or at the canal where the hotel is located (an even further distance). Being too tired from the car trip to walk with our entire luggage back and forth to the airport booth to change our tickets, the only option feasible to us was continuing with the taxi, asking the skipper to drop us at the Guglie. After entering the city, the skipper asked us to disembark in front of a low bridge that could not be traversed, at a location at even a further distance than the Guglie from the hotel and with more bridges to cross by foot. According to the hotel reception clerk the skipper had called for assistance with our luggage; she explained she couldn’t dispatch anyone, but had instructed the skipper to enter the canal from the opposite direction, a shorter ride with only 3 high traversable bridges, as we could see ourselves when 2 days later another taxi returned us to the airport through that route.

In summary: We paid for the convenience of directly getting to our hotel by water taxi but, either through the wrong information at the airport booth and/or the wrong route taken by the skipper we were dropped at a location worse than the Guglie. Our request to VeniceLink to refund at least the difference between the shared transfer and taxi (€ 41) was refused because “we had enjoyed a shorter ride without stops at other hotels”, though we had made it clear from the beginning that the only reason for a water taxi was to get directly to our hotel because of the luggage, and we would have enjoyed some sightseeing during the afternoon hours.

The water taxi is clean and very nice but expensive! It was a better ride than the water buses which are extremely crowed and uncomfortable.

I would avoid them if possible, but the problem is that you can't if you have several heavy pieces of luggage. They are very costly and the service we had on arrival was poor and on deprtaure, mediocre. Our train was due at 6.40 and at 6.39 I had a call to see where we were. I explained we had left Mestre and the train was probably 10 minutes away (late). When we arrived the driver was very annoyed that he had been kept waiting, talked on his mobile non stop and was ungrateful for the 70 euros he received for this 20 minute trip. To depart we had to pay 120 euro to the airport and while this driver wasn't rude, he wasn't friendly or particualrly helpful with the luggage.

There is a great way of getting to Venice from the airport, it cost 27euros return (the ticket is good for 1 month) with Alilaguna. There are two lines that can take you to Venice, the blue one and the yellow one. The yellow one is about 20 min faster and gets you to the Rialto bridge, if you take the blue one it will take you to the plaza San Marco and these two points are not very far by foot.

Check the schedule as sometimes it is better to take the blue line one, even if it takes 20 min longer, depending on the time you arrive at the terminal which is located a 5 to 7 min walk from the airport.

Always took the water bus, cheap at seven euros for the day. Coming back from St Marks to the station with our cases we decided we did not want the cramped conditions with such high temperature and humidity. It cost sixty euros for the two of us. Four times the cost but ten times as enjoyable. You have to pay cash btw.
