“What a fantastic Motel in a beautiful region”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

This was one of our favourite motels on our whole trip to New Zealand...Kay was the perfect hostess and I haven't seen such a clean motel in a long time....

It was like stepping back in time...to the '60's....and we loved this retro feel to the place...

A comfy bed, small kitchenette and walking distance to the pub where we had a great counter meal....

Stay there, you won't be sorry, they even have wi fi... :)

We stayed for a 1 night during the fantastic trip to NZ.

Hostess Kay was so friendly, she helped us so much with laundry.
Rooms are big and clean. Full kitchen available for a very reasonable price.
Ross is so small (btw ecorafting base is there) we were so surprised to find such quality service & hospitality.

Kay was so friendly and accommodating. We travelled with a toddler and an infant and two adults. Excellent experience. Spotless warm and spacious accommodation. Couldn't ask for any better.

The room even came complete with a kitchenette, so we cooked our own meal. Handy when there aren't many options in town except a pub.

Room Tip: We stayed in the studio room and it was great, plenty of room for a travel cot too.

It was a pleasure to return to this quiet spot on the west coast and spend two peaceful nights in comfort. Kay makes everyone very welcome. Ross is a bit of a secret as not so many travellers stop overnight from what I can make out but there is plenty to do and see. It's a friendly place apart from the cafe where the staff went to hide when we came in at 3.20pm. Think they wanted to go home early ha ha! Visit the Gold Fields and the beautiful bush walk. The beach is beautiful and you might see seals and magnificent driftwood sculptures. There's a lovely bit of railway heritage with the remaining rail bridge which you can walk over. I believe it is going to be turned into a cycle way. It's also a good base for day trips north or south depending on your direction of travel. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The bed was comfortable. Found the tv controls a bit complicated but I am not very technical! I also set the sensitive fire alarm off with the toaster: idiot! Kay was very generous with rhubarb too which I enjoyed on my travels and it made me a 'regular' tourist lol. Seriously, DO consider visiting Kay and Ross. This village is everything that Franz is not: classic NZ!

Room Tip: They are all quiet.

Quiet location, very large rooms, though the cooker is small and rather basic. But a lovely village - lots of character.

Ross is a quiet, sleepy village and this is a small family-run motel; the decor perhaps a little dated but entirely comfortable. The owner was very friendly and relaxed. There was a surprising amount to do on an overnight stop - we walked the gold trail and the incredible secluded beach.

Bear in mind that Ross is a small village with only one (small) general store and a couple of places to eat. If intending to eat out or to use the store, it may pay to check opening times in advance, as these vary outside of peak season. The nearest petrol stations are in Harihari and Hokitika.
