“Truly delightful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 September 2013

As so many visitors to Spain head to the coast or the famous towns and cities it is unsurprising that an area as beautiful and interesting as the subbetica is largely unknown. Flanked by the two main motorways speeding people to the beaches and golf courses, you could easily miss it. Perhaps the fact it is not an obvious choice for tourists explains part of its charm But if you do choose to explore the region, make La Era your base, or if you need a a break and want to stay somewhere really special, book. The owners have created an oasis of calm and rustic elegance, we were made to feel so welcome, the food was superb, the decor exquisite. The owners, Davinia and Raoul, care deeply about their region, its character and products, its sustainability, evident in the cooking and decoration. The morning we left we were served a wonderful breakfast and commented on the superb hot cinnamon rolls, a local delicacy. When we left, Raoul drove ahead, through the village, until we tracked down the baker's van so we could get a packet of the rolls. Somehow, I don't think you can find that kind of care on the Costa del Sol. La Era - A truly delightful experience.

From the moment we walked through the doors of this delightful hotel we knew we had found the perfect retreat. We stayed here to celebrate my birthday and the time we spent here was extremely enjoyable and restful.

The hotel itself has been beautifully and tastefully renovated and oozes character. We were warmly welcomed by Davinia and Raul and they went out of their way to make sure our stay was perfect. Our room was very comfortable and the bathroom had a combined bath and shower - the shower being wonderfully powerful. There was A/C and wi-fi in the room. There was also ample space for parking immediately outside the hotel.

The swimming pool was also gorgeous - just the right size and temperature to cool down in and the sun loungers were very comfortable. There is a very cosy dining room but we opted to eat dinner outside on the terrace, which was delightful. Our meal consisted of two imaginative salads and then my husband had a very tasty steak and I had salmon with a mushroom sauce. Davinia and Raul then surprised me with an apple cake with candles on it and a bottle of cava as a birthday gift from them, which I thought was extremely thoughtful of them. We also had a wonderful breakfast on the terrace the following morning.

Every thing about this hotel is wonderful - it is an extremely restful and relaxing place to stay and the additional thoughtful touches, like the staircase up to our room after dinner was lit by candelight (very romantic), the chocolates and freshly cut sunflowers in the room, the beautiful soft linen on the bed, the care in the way the hotel had been furnished and decorated made this the perfect retreat for us.

On a trip down through Spain we stayed just one night (would have loved to stay longer). Fabulous hospitality from the owners, could not have wanted more. Only down side was the weather which was not that special and too cool to use the pool. Food was great, breakfast just kept coming! Hope to visit again.

Lovely people awaiting your arrival; from the first moment they share their authentic joy of you visiting their place. How pleasant, friendly and warm is the company of both Davinia and Raoul. Their food, breakfast as well as dinner, is characterized by high quality, local, biological ingredients and home made products, combined in great dishes with a wonderfull taste. The B&B itself is like the people who run it: a serene place that you never want to leave. Davinia and Chef Raoul, we will be back. Ewit & Jolanda

Once this boutique hotel and restaurant are discovered by other visitors like us, it will surely be difficult to secure a table. La Era is nestled in a small white village amid the mountain vistas. We came for dinner and upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the owner who escorted us to the dining room near the back of the hotel. It’s a charming setting of antiques, well-organized and tastefully put together down to the hand-painted plates. Being the only patrons dining that evening, we were treated like royalty. The menu offerings can be described as “rustic-chic” with good use of local offerings that are taken up a notch. We started with the tomatoes, onion and pepper appetizer. Loved it! Such simple ingredients highlighted with some of the best olive oil the region offers. We’ve already duplicated the dish back home. My husband had the lamb stew and I had the chicken, both were accompanied by potatoes. Both entrees were very flavorful and met our expectations. When my husband ordered the homemade sausage, the owner politely told him that he ordered too much food and instead provided him a small sample or tapa, for him to try. We had a delicious bottle of local, Spanish red wine that I only wish I had paid attention to its name, as it paired well with my meal. We completed our romantic, candlelight dinner with coffee. We found the overall quality to surpass its price, making our meal not only an exceptionally good value, but one that we’ll fondly look back on, as we recount our lovely visit to Andalusia.

We are a family of 4, well-travelled throughout Spain, with 2 children age 12 and 14 who spent a weekend at La Era. The Hotel was delightful. I usually don't like to eat in Hotels, preferring to seek out some local restaurants, but the meals there were superb, and we knew going anywhere else would be a disappointment.
We took a bike ride from the pretty white village of Zuheros to Cabra and Lucena along a "Via Verde" which is a disused railway line through dramatic and beautiful countryside filled with spring flowers. It is downhill or flat all the way and easy for the children. The owners Raul and Davinia lent us their high-end mountain bikes and took us up to the top of the village to start, and picked us up at the end. Highly recommended, though I would advise ending at Cabra if you have children, to not make the trip too long. There is a great park there with a river where you can have a picnic lunch.
In the village of Almedinilla don't miss the Roman Villa. It is remarkably well preserved with mosaics and murals.
What really made the trip special was Raul and Davinia's exceptional hospitality and kindness, doing everything possible to make our stay there so enjoyable. If you want to combine a charming hotel, great food, beautiful countryside, sporting activity, historical sites, and a taste of Andalucian culture you could not do better than to start here.
