“Nice location - slightly rundown looking but quirky place”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

The staff are friendly and helpful and the surrounding scenery was lovely. We had a room looking straight at the ranges - really nice and relaxing seating out there staring at the scenery. The room itself was basic and had a smell about it but this is due to the bore water that is used. Although the whole place looks rundown and the rooms are shabby the room is clean and the beds were super comfy - had one of the best nights sleep! The restaurant was cute and the food was nice enough - not super - but nice enough. They had a couple of guys singing in the bar area and they were good. Was a ok stay for one night.

Room Tip: A room looking at the ranges - just for the view

Dear CanberraFoodieACT

Thanks for taking the time to review Glen Helen

As your name indicates food is an important part of your journeys, we will be aiming for an 'excellent' rather than an 'ok' report for our Namatjira Gallery Restaurant next time you come by! Many do rate us highly

We are also glad you had a great rest while staying, and enjoyed our friendly service

Kind regards

Brilliant location along the riverside and mountain, with ready access to the Gorge itself only 5 minutes, and close to other locations like Ormiston Gorge. Very pleasant and knowledgeable staff with good customer focus. I liked the informal atmosphere. The restaurant meal on Friday night was excellent kangaroo. The older basic style of room was not a big issue since everything was clean. Drinking water is supplied every day in the room. We stayed 2 nights and are very happy that we had this experience

Room Tip: some rooms have front door overlooking the glen and river, you can sit outsidePF - sharing password...

Dear Steve W

thanks for taking the time to post a review.

We are delighted your stay was a happy one, and hope you really got to see lots of the wonderful visitor locations throughout the West MacDonnell National Park while you were staying. That is a real plus of basing yourself at Glen Helen, as you are so well situated for exploring the Park.

We will tell you that there is at least 7 days worth of attractions to see while basing yourself here, but generally only Grey Nomads have the luxury of staying that long!!

I am delighted to hear you got great service from our staff, as that is an important focus for us!!

We hope the rest of your Red Centre Holiday was wonderful too!

Kind regards

I've previously been here on day trips and have always enjoyed the hospitality of staff and eaten in the 'casual' dining section. On the weekend just gone, I came with some friends to camp and enjoy a live musician in the Homestead. The bathroom facilities for those camping are perfectly adequate and pleasant. The thing that I appreciated the most was the hospitality of the staff in the Homestead. A couple of the girls in the group I was in got VERY rowdy and all of the staff remained friendly, accommodating and very flexible. Special kudos to Jarrah, Roger and Sylvia. We had a really great stay, in large part thanks to your hospitality. As a hospitality industry professional, I appreciated that you guys proved that a five star experience can be created even for a group of gals in a bunch of swags!

Dear danielleraeg

thanks so much for taking the time to post such a positive review.

It was great to know your group had such a good time, and that you felt the atmosphere in the Homestead was so positive.

It certainly was a great night of music and fun, in the tradition of Glen Helen Homestead, and I know the musos really loved it too

We try always to be respectful and offer great service, so thanks for letting us know this worked for you.

Kind regards

We stayed in a 4 bed room, en suite and had dinner here. This place trades on being the last place on the sealed road and the only place in the vicinity to offer...anything. The room was basic (the provided bug spray was empty), the ensuite had the tiniest basin and the ambiance was akin to a post-war East German retirement home. The pool was grubby and the restaurant, well, that's where Faulty Towers came into full swing. First we had no chairs, then no cutlery and after we got our own menus ordered from an impressive sounding a la carte menu. The food was over priced and the service laughable. The chips were cold and still raw and the lamb dish was raw in the middle. Better value to camp if you have to stay here...

Dear Rdwrer

thanks for taking time to review Glen Helen.

I can see that not much went right for you during your stay with us!!

Unfortunately when you choose to have 4 adults in a family room you have elected for the most economical option but not the most comfortable, as a queen and bunks room is really designed for two parents and two smaller children.
Staying in two rooms, you would have been more comfortable, but it is also possible that when you booked this was one of the few rooms remaining during a very busy period

We know these rooms need a facelift, as you will read below we are working on this.

Also unfortunately you were dining on a night where so many things went really wrong for us! You can see how many great reviews our Restaurant usually gets, so a night where we have suddenly sick staff, a huge number of unexpected diners and a couple of drunks badmouthing the staff is not the norm for us!
I am sorry your experience of being seated on a table needing resetting after and earlier sitting was not all you hoped for. Can't say what went wrong with the chips but I hope you mentioned it to the staff and got some fresh ones!

All I can say is that you were unlucky, and I am really sorry your experience was so disappointing

Kind regards

Before we lifted off to Australia I ran all our booked hotels through TripAdvisor. The pictures on this webpage left me with a few worries about this hotel but they where all washed out the moment we arrived. We spend 1 night in the rooms available. They are small but absolutely cozy.

The age of the hotel, the setting, the staff, the interior. It all comes together in this small place.
It's a fit!

The restaurant food has to be mentioned as excellent, the friendliness of the staff and for once this is not a rip-off hotel. Prices are absolutely reasonable in comparisson with other Red Center hotels/resorts.

Thank you for having given us a very nice stay!

Room Tip: We had room 10.

Dear SofieVT

Thankyou for taking the time to post a review for Glen Helen on Trip Advisor

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us, and commend you on taking the time to really get a feel for everything we have to offer here.

It is not always about first impressions, sometimes one needs to take time to absorb the atmosphere of a property to get the most out of a stay.

Thanks too for your comments about the prices at Glen Helen. We work hard to keep our charges fair and balanced, having taking into account the costs of remote operation.

We hope you enjoyed the rest of your Red Centre and Australian journey, and thanks again for your review

Kind regards

I've stayed at Glen Helen 4 or 5 times now, and always enjoy it. I really appreciate the simplicity of the place, the incredible setting and the generosity of the hosts Shelagh and Colin. Most recently I held my fortieth birthday celebration there, and it was fantastic. It's a simple, outback motel - if you're looking for fancy accommodation you should probably look elsewhere. But the rooms facing the gorge are sweet, with beautiful views from windows and the open door, and the bar and deck are pretty stunning at sunset. There is a shady pool, green grass to lie on and daydream, good food in the restaurant and a camp kitchen with fridge, gas BBQ and burner for you to self-cater if you prefer. What more do you need? I'll certainly be back!

Room Tip: Any of the rooms facing the gorge are fantastic.
