5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2013

Great small hotel, run by the owners Miguel and Marian brilliantly, looking after the guests and the details. Great restaurant and beautifully prepared food....Set in a lovely little town and surrounded by the beauty of the pyrenees....

My wife and I planned a two-day venture into the Pyrenees from our holiday location near San Sebastian. I noted that the tiny town of Lanuza, just inside the Spanish border, was well placed for an overnight stop. Its hotel, La Casuena, had received positive reviews. My email contacts with the co-owner, Marian, went well, despite my awful Spanish and her professed lack of fluent English, as we each used Google translate to render our messages comprehensible. Marian was always charming in her messages. When we arrived on a rainy and cold day, despite it being summer, we were bowled over by the stunning location of the hotel. It sits on the edge of a long and narrow lake and is surrounded by high mountains which, in summer, are mostly green with some exposed rock but are snow-capped. Marian was waiting at the door as we left our car, her husband carried in our bags and showed us our lovely room, looking out over the lake. After a long and difficult drive because of the weather and a road closure, we retreated to the dining room-bar-lounge area where we enjoyed some nice wine. Later, dinner was a treat: several courses of lovely food, served impeccably and very well priced for the quality. We slept well in a large and comfortable bed. This was a delightful experience of place-people-accommodation-food. It's worth even going out of one's way to reach this village. The trip here and away is also a joy.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the lake is quite special.

The house, staff and location are great wether you come in the summer or even to enjoy the snow. The house is placed by a lake in that awesome mountains. Take some time to visit the small villages around or to visit Panticosa spa.

We stayed here for three days over the winter holiday, wished we could have stayed longer, and are already planning a trip back for the summer.

If you read about the town of Lanuza in the guides, it is described as a deserted little town that was partially submerged by the construction of the embalse. And, this is true, but they forgot to mention that it is also a charming, newly reconstructed warren of a streets, corners, and breathtaking views. And, the hotel is perfectly situated in the town, overlooking the embalse with fabulous views of water, mountains, and, off to the corner, of St. Gallent and Formigal in the distance.

Beyond the picturesque nature of the location, the hotel is in the heart of beautiful hiking and wonderful small towns. We took two fabulous hikes while there - both recommended by the owners. One left from the neighboring town of St. Gallent and is apparently a heavily traversed Pyrenean hiking trail in the summer. In the winter is was empty, a bit icy, but spectacular. The other was a short trail (2-3 hours ida y vuelta) to the neighboring town of Panticosa. The trail was a wide fire-trail with beautiful views the length of the trail. Both St. Gallent and Panticosa are wonderful mountain towns that are worth visiting (St. Gallent more than Panticosa in our opinion). We had the impression that these trails were just the tip of the iceberg as far as trails go in the area. Furthermore,in Lanuza you are at the base of a ski station and a short (30 minute) drive into France (we snow-shoed one day on the French side). In brief, it's a rich location with many potential sources of activities.

Beyond the beauty of the surrounding areas, we loved returning to Hotel Casueña. The hotel has a wonderful homey feeling, with a fire in the living room, people hanging out, drinking, talking, and/or playing cards in the common areas. And, there's a bar, with a good selection of drinks and snacks. After a long hike, we enjoyed coming back, showering and relaxing in front of fire with a cocktail before having dinner there.
Furthermore, the food was fabulous. For the dinner, there were at least 2-4 options on the menu that were purely vegetarian, and that were really delicious. And, for breakfast, beyond a wonderful assortment of breads, OJ, coffee, cheeses, etc, there were eggs made to order.

The decoration of the hotel is fun - Spanish writers - and the little details (such as the painted ceilings, and interesting wood furniture) really bring the hotel alive. The rooms were cosy, albeit a little small (particularly when you've brought a lot of winter gear), but they had good closet space, and more was not necessary given that you spend most of your time outside or downstairs in the common areas.

The best part of the hotel is the couple who run it. They are exceptionally knowledgeable about the area, remarkably helpful (and always looking to help you find discounts on rentals of things -e.g., snow shoes), and always on-site if you need something or just want to learn more about the area. Also, a small plus for me, is that they have adopted several rescue dogs and appear to feed the entire outdoor cat population of the town in the barn next door to the hotel.

All told, a definite keeper!

A truly enjoyable place to stay in, enjoy superb cuisine and relax after a day in the mountains on a bike.

If you are looking for a place to stay where everything from rooms to service is perfect in Valle de Tena, that's the place we can really recommend.

For those who ride:
Great trails around if you don't mind some climbing.

If travelling through Spain, do not miss this area, and make the effort to get into Lanuza for a few nights of R&R at this lovely little home. Hosts speak very little english, but run their resot beautifully, with a lot of attention to detail. Meals are fantastic, drinks well priced, and good range of wine available. Rooms were quite small, and rather noisy. A great base for eploring both the french, and Spansih sides of the pyrenees..... Hotel was hard ot find, but deifntiely worth the trip.
Can't wait to come back....

Room Tip: Ask for a front room, overlooking the lake....
