“We love Juana!”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

Definitely our favorite hotel stay in the Galapagos. We accidentally got to the hotel a day early, but Juana accommodated us and made us feel right at home. We arrived at an odd hour and missed breakfast, and she promptly made us sandwiches and coffee. Then, she told us there was a large group visiting and that she was putting us in her own hotel two buildings away, at no extra charge.

Juana was also very helpful in getting us a day tour, and diligent about us getting it at a fair price. On our way out of Isabela, her husband offered to drop us at the ferry dock at 5a. Very sweet couple. Would absolutely stay there again.

We stayed with Juana from La Gran Tortuga on Isabela Island. Juana picked us up at the airport and took us back to the hotel. We had a fabulous room, HUGE with high ceilings and super clean. We are a family of 3 and we got a room with 4 beds, with A/C, bath, and a mini-fridge. It was really hot and muggy in April and the reliable A/C and good shower were such blessings and yummy breakfast was just the icing on the cake. We were extremely comfortable. (Juana, La Gran Tortuga; $378 for 3N, with breakfast). Juana booked us for the Las Tintoreas tour ($50pp) and Los Tunneles ($80pp). Both tours were Excellent!!! We also went snorkeling at Concha y Perla in Isabela. The bubble rope that denoted danger had gotten free from its anchor and was invisible. I got dragged out to sea on an extremely strong current, over sharp rocks and it was a pretty scary (and painful) experience! When I got back to the hotel, Juana took one look at my lacerated foot and took out some first aid stuff and took care of me. Thank you Juana!

Also, the hotel is an easy walk to "town", about 5 minutes. There are a few restaurants that serve very good food. Each restaurant has these daily "specials". They are really good deals with a juice, entre, and salad for $6-7 dollars. They are really the best tasting and freshest choices you can make. At dusk, some street vendors would come out and we got some really good grilled plantains too. Overall, a great time!

I took a group of students from Ohio and we stayed at La Gran Tortuga. Rooms are very clean, with A/C. The breakfast was delicious! Juanita and Don Jose are extremely nice people. They help out in any way they can. It was a great experience. I would highly recommend this place! The only thing was that there is a rooster in front of the hotel that made noise very early in the morning. For those rooms close by it was a bit of a bother, but other than that everything was great!

new and very clean. good breakfast. no television in room is fine with us! we're hear for the wildlife! they were doing some constructions above the roof of our room but they only worked during regular hours. I also was happy they had an outdoor shower at the entrance because we were covered in mud all the time and it was good to rinse off before going into the habitaccion.

I spent 3 nights here with my wife in April 2014. We were given a room on the "street", good size and given that everybody is already sleeping at 9.30 it was quiet too. The service was better than expected, every day they cleaned the room, drinkable water always available, very good internet connection (much better than all the other places where we tried on Galapagos), the breakfast was good enough.
The downside was the transfer to the harbor (I would have rated the hostal very good otherwise), there is a boat leaving to Puerto Ayora at 6 AM hence you need to rely on a taxi driver because at that time there are not many around. The husband of the owner agreed to meet at 5.40 but until 5.47 nobody was there and we had to find someone else to reach the harbor. Missing the boat would not be pleasant therefore I recommend to make sure a reliable taxi will pick you up at the agreed time.

Exceptionally clean, comfortable, social, convenient, but the best part is Juana and her husband. Juana greeted us warmly and gave us a very thorough briefing about all the things to do on Isabela. Throughout our 4 day stay she was always warm and helpful, even when we purchased excursions from other providers.
When booking I had trouble determining whether there are two Gran Tortuna lodgings on Isabela. There is only one. I also had trouble determining where it is. Google maps showed it in the center of the island. It´s actually very conveniently located near the center of Vilailla, but several blocks from the shore.
Note that Juana and her husband speak extremely clear Spanish but almost no English. This was not an issue for us or some of the guests who spoke almost no Spanish.

We had a wonderful time at La Gran Tortuga. We stayed here for 3 nights and paid $180 (without tax) for the room. We received a deluxe room which had a private bathroom. The room was very clean and made every day. It was great to come back to a room with towels that come in different shapes, such as swans and flowers. In addition, the cost of the room came with breakfast every morning. The breakfast was so good and really filling. We had eggs, toast, cheese, ham, yogurt, fresh fruit, and freshly squeeze juice.

We ordered our day excursions through the hotel to Sierra Negra Volcano, Las Tintoreras, and Los Tunneles.

The owners of the hostel were really nice. The lady waited for us with my sister's name when we got off the pier. We had an ant problem in our room and they took care of it. Lastly, when we left Isabela Island, the lady gave us a bagged breakfast with a sandwich, juice box, and fruit.

I would highly recommend this place!
